Without The Jones Family, their would be No Seafair!

As this trio of Jones Designers, built some of the Sports most famous boats…

You never know when Father Time’s going to ask you to “Bring your Torch”. As Ron Jones Jr. died at the relatively young age of 67 this past April 24th. With “JR” being the third generation of revolutionary Unlimited Hydroplane designers and builders of these unique racing boats.

Ron Jones Jr’s Grandfather, Tudor Owen “Ted” Jones shocked the Boating world when driving His radical “three-pointer” Unlimited Hydroplane to win the 1950 APBA Gold Cup in Detroit, Michigan. During an era when the winning Yacht Club got to Host the following year’s Gold Cup event.

As Ted Jones was the first to successfully employ the skimming technique of an Unlimited running with it’s propeller only partially submerged and skimming the water on it’s two sponsons, when He designed the Slo-Mo-Shun IV for Stan Sayres in 1949. And with this boat’s superiority, the sport would never look back!

As Ted Jones Slo-Mo-Shun IV and V Hydroplanes would dominate Unlimited racing for a five year stretch. Winning the gold Cup between 1950-54. Before

Lou Fageol spectacularly barrel-rolled the Slo-Mo-Shun V during Gold Cup qualifying on Lake Washington in 1955!

Miraculously Fageol survived this backwards flip some fifty-feet in the air, albeit forcing His retirement from boath racing! Which ended the Slo-Mo-Shun’s dynasty, before owner Stanley Sayres died of a Heart attack in 1956.

Having regaled Y’all Wayback’ many Moons ago with Lou fageol’s connection to Mother Speedway in the following No Fenders yarn…

http://www.nofenders.net/2015/09/hydros-drivers-with-speedway-connections.html

As Ted Jones designed and built Unlimited Hydroplanes with such legendary names as Miss Thriftway, Miss Century 21, Miss Wahoo and the Hawaii Kai III. Being just a few of the names that saw Ted’s boats win a staggering 75 major races, 14 APBA Gold Cups and ten consecutive National High Points Championships between 1950-66, according to former Unlimited Hydroplane Historian Fred Farley.

While Ted is also credited with spotting a promising driver named Bill Muncey, who went onto become one of the sport’s legends…

Although Ted’s most famous Hull arguably has to be the Green Dragon, His 1962 Miss Bardahl. Which won the National High Points Championship and Gold Cup three consecutive years in-a-row between 1963-65. Which was also Ted’s last “Hands On” Hull He was involved in, before retiring from racing.

Ted Jones died at the age of 90 on January 9, 2000.

Ron Jones Sr. was brought-in over the winter of 1962 to fine tune the Miss Bardahl’s sponsons, with obviously dramatic effects. Before taking over the reigns from His father, ironically having built the 1958 championship winning Miss Bardahl His father designed.

This was the first Unlimited He built, whilst ultimately building over 500 estimated boats of all classes, including some two dozen plus Unlimiteds during His lifetime.

Ron had been chomping at the bit to design a Cabover Hydroplane, with the driver’s cockpit being placed ahead of the engine. Which Ole Bardahl let Him do for the 1966 season. Yet sadly, thru no fault of His own. Ron Munsen lost His life when the boat threw a propeller and dove to the bottom of the Potomac river, killing Munsen instantly. The sport’s darkest day, when three drivers met their maker during that year’s Presidents Cup in Washington DC.

Yet Senior would be vindicated when Tom D’Eath and the Miss US, a Cabover “Picklefork” design of His won the 1976 Gold Cup, for which every winner since has driven this same forward cockpit design…

The elder Ron was the Designer of two legendary Unlimited Hulls. First what was known as the “Winged Wonder”, the 1973 Pride of Pay n Pak, which won 22 races enroute to the National High Points Championship between 1973-75.

And my All-time Numero Uno Unlimited, the 1980 Miss Budweiser Griffon! Which also won 22 races and was basically unstoppable between 1980-84. With it’s only major blemish being Dean Chenoweth’s death at Tri-cities in 1982.

Senior was also responsible for implementing the now de riggour cockpit canopies following the death of Chenoweth. Which was first used successfully on what was known as the “bubble Bud”. The team’s third and final version of it’s legendous’ Rolls Royce Griffon Hulls.

As new “bud Man” driver Jimmy Kropfield was the first to compete in a enclosed cockpit raceboat in 1985. Although the Bubble Bud’s canopy was actually composed from vacuum-formed plexiglass and opened skywards, pivoting forwards vs. traditional F-16 canopy style.

As this ushered in the now long ago mandatory use of surplus F-16 canopies. Which Ron Sr. introduced on the first turbine powered Miss Budweiser and 7/11 Unlimiteds in 1986.

Ron Jones Sr. died at age 84 on January 19, 2017.

Ron Jones Jr’s accomplishments were a little harder to discern initially. Other than He spent the majority of His lifetime working on boats until His last project, the U-88 Unlimited in 2011. Having been diagnosed with Stage-4 emphysema and COPD, due to a genetics disorder described as Alpha-1 Anti-Tryplsin I believe.

Ron Jr. began working in the family’s boat building business in earnest during High School, when He would cut and prepare all of the wooden parts used in the building of Unlimited Hydroplance. With His Grandfather Ted being the Shop Foreman. Before His Dad Ron Jones Sr. introduced the widespread application of aluminum honeycomb composite to Unlimited Hydroplanes, first upon the 1973 Pride of Pay n Pak.

JR worked on all aspects of building Unlimiteds for His Pop’s Ron Jones Marine business, including the implementation of the F-16 enclosed cockpit canopies and migration to turbine power…

JR met and apparently interacted with Dave Villwock prior to His being chip Hanauer’s Crew Chief upon the Miss Circus Circus, before His Driving career began. And worked with Scott Pierce and the Evans brothers Mark and Mitch amongst other drivers.

As JR rebuilt the Hull that previously was the Miller American Beer wagon of 1985, which began life as the ’84 Atlas Van Lines Hull in 1984. Becoming the brand new from the waterline up U-50 American Spirit in 1992.

Ron Jones Jr. also was a team owner three different times. The first being the building of the Coors Dry in less than 60 days! Which rookie driver Villwock, making His Unlimiteds debut won first time out at San Diego in 1992! With JR noting this two wing boat was seeing a top speed of 218mph in Hawaii!

JR also rebuilt the former Miss Circus Circus after it caught on fire in Hawaii, which ran with a triple rear wing. Although villwock destroyed both boats in ’93 and Rone Jr. and Villwock split under bitter terms. While JR’s final ownership was in a not so enjoyable partnership with Dr. Ken Muscatel

As thanks to the ingenuity of All three generations of Jones, the sport of Unlimited Hydroplanes would have never been the same without them!

HYDROS: Three Promising Drivers Hoping to Make Waves

As I just Hope All three will be competing in the season’s final two events…

Two thirds of this year’s remaining H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Drivers are rookies, and thus unknown quantities for the moment. Whilst it’s unknown if the  other HotSchue’ will be behind the tiller at either of the two remaining races?

Bucket List Racing

U-40 Snuskitush Enterprises, Dustin Echols

U-440 Boitano Homes, (R) Brent Hall

Once again, I missed last year’s memo that Dustin Echols had replaced the Sport’s All-time winningest H1 Unlimited’s Driver Dave Villwock at San Diego.

And like all of the Big Boats Skippers’, Echols “CV” (Curriculum Vitae) is Chock-ablock full of lower division Championships…

As Dustin was the 2017 H1 Unlimited Rookie Of the Year, having qualified aboard the Bucket List Racing’s U-440 that year. Which I believe is the least powerful Unlimited in the Fleet due to it’s Lycoming t-53 turbine. Yet Dustin drove it skillfully to sixth place overall at season’s end.

As Echols has extensively driven the U-440 since then, along with team owner Kelly Stocklin’s name listed as Co-Skipper the past few years. With Echols going on Sabbatical last season in order to help His daughter Findley’s racing career…

Reportedly in 2020, Sharon and Kelly Stocklin bought the former U-21 Go Fast Turn Left Racing’s 2007 Lycoming T-55 turbine Hull, which became the team’s current U-40 Hydro’, originally driven by Dave Villwock.

Dustin Echols served notice to the entire Unlimited Fleet at the season opener Southern cup on Lake Guntersville by qualifying P1 with a stunning lap of 171.294mph!

As Echols lap was the fifth fastest in series history, and fastest in the two decades since Fuel-flow restrictions were mandated. Yet All of the seven Hydroplanes entered at Guntersville were fast due to the course featuring wider turns.

Then the following week at Madison, Indiana, Echols suffered a wild Barrel-rolling Blowover accident for which I’ve got no idea if the Minnowesqe team from Snohomish, WA can repair the damaged Hull in time for the two upcoming races?

Whilst I’m guessing Echols will take little solace in being classified third in the Governor’s Cup on accumulated points?

The U-440 Boitano Homes is the original Bucket List Racing Hull that began life with the Sport’s smallest turbine, a Lycoming T-53 unit. As I’m left guessing that this 2005 Hull was upgraded to turbine power in 2012, and then being rebuilt in 2015, albeit retaining said T-53 turbine.

Rookie Brent Hall is set to make His H1 Unlimited debut at this year’s Columbia Cup, and at Age 53, according to H1 Unlimited. The Seattle driver will make history as the Sport’s first ever African American to race an Unlimited Hydroplane.

Hall last raced Hydroplanes in the Grand Prix class in 2012. And finished second in the nation in last year’s F500 tunnel Boat class. Along with having extensive lower series experience.

Go Fast Turn Left Racing

U-60 The Beast Unleashed present Miss Thriftway, (R) Gunnar O’Farrell

In 2019, go Fast Turn Left Racing located in Maple valley, WA, and owned by Greg and Brian O’farrell reportedly raced a brand new Unlimited Hydroplane as the U-99.9 Carstars Miss rock, with Brian Perkins at it’s controls during that year’s controversial Seafair race.

Veteran Unlimited Skipper Perkins unfortunately Jumped the Start of the Seafair Cup Final and was assessed a One minute penalty. Which I believe saw the U-99.9 clasified seventh and last of the race…

As the Mis Rock of Seattle Radio Station KISW 99.9FM is a longtime staple of Warshington’ Unlimited Hydroplanes History. Thus I’m making the leap and Arse-suming that this year’s U-60 with rookie Skipper Gunnar O’Farrell at it’s controls is the same Hull?

Yes, on the surface it appears that the renamed U-60 is indeed the team’s 2019 Unlimited Hydroplane, which Gunnar qualified as an Unlimited driver aboard last year when completing the requisite 15-laps over 130mph. With gunnar’s fastest being a skosh over 145mph.

Gunnar has most recently been racing in the 2.5 Mod ‘n Stock Inboard class, where He won the 2021 summer Nationals.

Meanwhile the team’s set to make waves with the return of the famed Miss Thriftway name upon it’s Hull at this year’s Seafair gold Cup event. For which the press release claims is an All new 100% Carbon Composite Hydroplane that rookie Gunnar O’farrell set a top speed of 161-plus mph during testing at Tri-cities earlier this year.

As owner Greg O’Farrell has a past connection to the original Miss Thriftway When at Age 11, He was given the opportunity of a lifetime. When the legendous’ Mr. Unlimited’, aka Bill Muncey took the young boy out for a spin around the Lake Washington race course in Miss Thriftway II with Greg perched upon Muncey’s lap!

HYDROS: Can Anybody Stop Strong Racing this Season?

As they’ve definitely got two of the best Skippers and Hulls on the circuit…

Like my No Fenders story’s title denotes. The upstart Strong Racing organization now just in it’s third season, looks like the team to Beat this year! And with two of the fastest boats and veteran drivers, look out everybody!

Strong Racing

U-8 Beacon electric, J. Michael Kelly

U-9 Beacon Plumbing, Cory Peabody

It’s now two years ago since Vanessa and Darrell Strong acquired the assets of the former Elstrom and Jones Racing H1 Unlimited Juggernauts, with Skippers J. Michael Kelly and Cory Peabody, longtime Best friends being retained this season.

Both team Hulls are running new sponsorship this year, with Kelly once again piloting the newer U-8 Beacon Electric. The former Elstrum U-16/96 built in 2014.

As Kelly’ and Peabody are both 44yrs old, with J. Michael having some 20yrs Hydroplane experience, along with multiple National Championships, including the 2021 H1 Unlimited National High Points Drivers Championship.

Kelly began the season with 96 Starts, 14 Wins, 84 Heat victories and 47 Podiums to His credit. And by my rudimentary math skills, should claim His 100th race start at Seattle.

And although it appears Kelly got off to a somewhat slow start in Guntersville. He made up for it at Madison, where He was awarded His 15th W’ when claiming the Governor’s Cup on accumulated points.

As Kelly has the most H1 Unlimited victoriesof current Skippers and is always a threat in the Emerald City. (Seattle) Along with having won the 2016 gold Cup.

Cory Peabody and His U-9 Hydroplane, the former Jones Racing race boat, is currently The oldest Hull in the fleet. With the Ron Jones, Jr. Hull having beenbuilt 31yrs ago in Gory 1992!

As the U-9 now sports Beacon Plumbing sponsorship, which last year was on Dave villwock’s U-40 Bucket List racing Hydro’.

Peabody who won last year’s gold Cup at Guntersville. Suffered a wicked End over End Blowover accident at the following Madison, Indiana event on the Ohio River. When racing Jimmy Shane for the first four laps Deck-to-Deck for victory in the Governor’s Cup final.

And the Old Gal was so severely damaged, that Peabody was forced to miss the remainder of the 2022 season, with the boat being completely rebuilt over last year’s Offseason.

Now sporting a new white and blue paint scheme in Beacon Plumbing colours, Peabody began this year’s season by winning for the second time in Alabama, when being declared the Southern Cup’s winner on accumulated points.

Then reportedly at Madison, Indiana. Peabody’s U-9 “Threw-a-Rod”, err broke it’s propeller strut during Sunday’s first preliminary Heat and was sidelined for the rest of the event…

But Strong Racing definitely looks to be the team to beat this season. With both Boats firing on All “Cylinders”, Uhm turbines spooled up!

And with Tri-cities being Thar Owners Home event, and both drivers posed to claim their second Gold Cup in Seattle. You’d have to say one of these two drivers will be this year’s National High Points Champion, with the other being disappointed…

Unlimited Racing Group

U-11 Legend Yacht Transport, Jamie Milsen

Not sure how many season now that veteran Jamie Milsen’s been at the tiller of the former U-11 JND’s Hydraulics Unlimited Hydroplane? Having just learned that the U-11 Hull was built in 1994, Zoinks!

Whale’ Milsen seems like a veteran to Mwah, although only having made 22 Starts prior to the beginning of this season. Having gotten His maiden Unlimited ride aboard the U-37 Peters n May Wayback’ in 2010 at Seattle. And then obtaining His Unlimited Creds’ when Qualifying for Unlimited racing aboard the U-21 Go Fast Turn Left Big Boyz’ Boat in 2013.

As Jamie’s won multiple championships in both Outboard and Inboard Hydroplanes, along with having scored 12 Outboard Hydroplane World Speed records, for which six still stand.

And whilst previously noting that it’s a fast Boat at times. Not knowing it had set the British Speed record in 2012 for fastest propeller driven boat in Bloody England. With an average speed of 175.11mph! It’s also perpetually had mechanical Gremlins to deal with, including turbine engine explosions!

Yet while not Flashy, Milsen and the U-11 Legend Yacht Transport Hydro’ have scored third and second place finishes at Guntersville and Madison this year. Seeing Jamie lead the National High Points Championship by one marker over J. Michael Kelly.

Yet this boat seems to continue feeling like a Midfield runner against the likes of Miss Madison and Strong Racing, whom they’re All chasing! With Milsen looking to score His maiden Finals victory soon! And either Tri-Cities or Seafair would be a great place for His first H1 Unlimited win.

HYDROS: Can the Miss Madison Racing Organization stay on Top?

Although Strong Racing will give them a Hard fight this season!

This year, your Humble No Fenders Scribe Tomaso’s very late to the party, with Half of the 2023 season over! And hence, I’m just attempting to give a brief overview of the nine H1 Unlimited Drivers competing this year, along with their respective teams. For which Y’all can compare ‘N contrast wit last year’s No Fenders Season preview below.

http://www.nofenders.net/2022/06/hydros-time-to-spool-up-for-2022-h1.html

As the Miss Madison Racing organization has been the team to beat for eternity now! Having read they’ve won 11 of the last 14 National High Points championships, aye Karumba!

Miss Madison Racing

U-1 Miss HomeStreet Bank, (R) Dylan Runn

U-91 Miss goodman Real Estate, Andrew Tate

Obviously the biggest news for the Miss Madison organization is that Jimmy Shane retired at the end of the 2022 season. With Shane leaving a massive hole due to His seven National High Points Drivers Championships and five Gold Cup wins. Along with a stout 25 overall victories!

As Shane’s seven Driver’s titles ties Him for second overall in the sport with the legendous’ “Mr. Unlimited”, aka Bill Muncey. Behind only Dave Villwock’s impressive ten Driver’s titles.

While as I scribbled Here upon No Fenders last year, His 25 victories tie Him for fourth overall with the late Dean Chenoweth. Surpassed only by the Sport’s pantheon of Greats, i.e.; Villwock’s 67 wins, Muncey’s 62 and Chip Hanauer’s 61!

http://www.nofenders.net/2022/09/hydros-jimmy-shane-now-only-few.html

According to H1 Unlimited’s official website, Runn becomes the 24th Miss Madison Racing driver, and is a multi-times Hydroplane Champion both in American and Canadian waters.

As Runn is a third generation Boat racer from New York with over 20yrs racing experience, and was the 2017 Hydroplane Racing League (HRL) Rookie Of the Year. Along with being the first in HRL history to win three consecutive Championships in three different classes!

Dylan took the team’s sister U-91 Unlimited out during the Sunday morning test period during last year’s San Diego Bayfair regatta and ran consistent laps at 138mph-plus, with a fastest lap of 156mph and change. (156.857mph)

Runn won His first preliminary Heat appropriately in Madison, Indiana, when beating Dustin Echols in Heat 3, before the finals were cancelled. And it won’t be a surprise if Dylan finds enough confidence in one of the best Hulls to fight for victory in the final two events.

Andrew Tate returns to the cockpit of an big Boyz’ Unlimited Hydroplane after a year’s hiatus, replacing Jeff Bernard in the U-91. As Andrew became my favourite Unlimited Skipper when previously driving the Jones Racing U-9 Les Schwab Hydroplane. Which He piloted to the 2018 National High Points Championship along with winning that year’s Gold cup event, appropriately in His Home state at Detroit. Joining His father Mark, whose won the Gold Cup twice and is a Michigan Hall of Fame inductee.

Tate had a Deck-to-Deck duel with Cory Peabody in the U-9 Beacon Plumbing in Heat 2 before Peabody finished ahead of Him. With Tate winning over Peabody’s teammate J. Michael Kelly in their next preliminary Heat before the day’s final at Guntersville Southern Cup.

Don’t know what exactly happened, other than I think I heard that Tate got “Washed Down” or ran into someone else’s Roostertail before Flipping at the start of the Southern cup’s Final! With Tate landing upside down during His Blowover!

And although Tate was checked and released from the Medical Center, the U-91Miss Goodman Real Estate, which was credited with finishing second in the Final on accumulated points. Was damaged enough that the team was forced to skip the next event, the team’s Home race at Madison, Indiana, on the Ohio River!

Although I’ll expect Miss Goodman Real Estate to be ready to race in both upcoming Washington events. Especially since I believe Seattle’s it’s Home event, where Tate should be a “Strong” Contendah’ for the Gold Cup victory…

Go3 Racing

U-3 Griggs presents Miss Ace Hardware, Jimmy King

This is the only remaining Piston powered Hull in the Unlimited fleet still competing. With the ‘Ol U-3 sporting a twin turbocharged V-12 Allison. Arse-sumedly with one turbo per bank of six cylinders behind the cockpit vs. the traditional front engine piston layout of the 1950’s thru Mid-1980’s.

And with Dave villwock’s retirement again last year, at Age 62, King becomes  the Sport’s Oldest Skipper in the fleet. As King’s been driving this boat since 2005, has contested some 84 races with 30 Heat wins. And was the 1994 Unlimited Hydroplane rookie Of the Year.

Thus, with such familiarity behind the Keyboard of the U-3 Griggs present Miss Ace Hardware Hull. Led to Him apparently winning His preliminary Sunday Heat vs. Jamie Milsen in the U-11 Legend Yacht Transport at Guntersville. Before being Disqualified for failing to run the minimum 80mph “Planing” speed during the five minutes Milling period, with Milsen being declared the winner.

Whilst I’ve got Zero idea if King was involved with Tate’s Blowover during the Southern cup Finale or not? Since King and the U-3 didn’t compete at Madison.

And I’ve got no idea if they’ll make the trip to Warshington’ or not? Since I Don’t do the Facebook thing and apparently it’s a State Secret where the team’s located? Although I believe Thar on the East Coast somewhere?

Whilst I won’t expect it to happen. The U-3 could be a “Sleeper” pick at the Gold Cup this year due to Seattle’s notorious “rollers” bouncing off of the Log Boom…

As C’mon H1 Unlimited, you can at least provide where each team’s located in your Team profiles! Whilst if I can Gory afford a yearly website domain, then GO3 Racing can do so, and have a team website for Fans to peruse!

HYDROS: H1 Unlimited Roars onto Backstretch of 2023 Season

As Hopefully, the final two races won’t be as Wild ‘N Wooly as the first two!

It’s really Hard for me to discern if the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane series is still a popular event or just treading water these days? As how many of Y’all know that the 2023 season is already halfway done?

Since just mere days before the start of the season in Alabama. The series publicly responded to San Diego’s postponement of this year’s Bayfair regatta due to incurring steep increases in production costs. With the organizers of the long running event featuring the Bill Muncey Cup claiming they planned to return next year.

And although the series was hopeful of eight Unlimited Hydroplane boats showing up for the Lake Guntersville Southern Cup on June 25th, only seven Hydros made the trek to Alabama.

And whilst the series has a new Broadcast partner, being available on Speed Sports One Motorsports Network, whatever that is? I prefer just “watching”, Err listening to the final Heat via H1 Unlimited’s Youtube channel.

Yet unbeknownst to Mwah, this year’s Southern Cup Final Heat was cancelled due to inclement weather. Yet the Final began before the impending Thunderstorm arrived. But due to one of the competitors Flipping! The race was cancelled since Thunder ‘N Lightning would arrive shortly afterwares.  With the day’s winner being awarded on overall weekend points.

Next, with the Madison regatta just a week later, two Hydros’ failed to show due to damage that couldn’t be repaired in time to at least one of the participants. Meaning only five Big Boyz’ Hydroplane’s showed up at Madison’s Ohio river for the July 2nd event.

And then I “Rinsed, lathered and Repeated”. When a week later, Lightning struck twice! Since once again, I searched Youtube repeatedly in vain! As the Madison Governor’s cup final was also scratched due to inclement weather after another Blowover incident during the final Heat, before more bad weather was expected to arrive again…

And with that, the Unlimiteds roar down the Backstretch to the final two races in my former Home state of Washington, with Seattle’s Seafair race hosting this year’s APBA Gold cup event August 6th.

Hopefully the entire field of a promising nine Hulls will make the drive over to Eastern Warshington’ for the upcoming Tri-Cities Columbia  Cup on July 30th.  Since several teams are located in the Seattle Metropolitan area.

With the U-1 Miss HomeStreet, U-3 Miss Griggs Hardware, U-8 Beacon Electric, U-9 Beacon Plumbing, U-11 Legend Yacht Transport, U-21 Lakeridge Paving, U-40 Bucket List Racing, U-91 Miss Goodman Real Estate and U-440 Boitano Homes All being listed as possible season entries upon the series official website.

Yeah, I know it’s been the HAPO Columbia Cup for a longtime now, but I prefer to think of the event in it’s more appropriate name of the Atomic Cup instead! With the race known by this moniker from it’s inception in 1966 thru 1972, due to it’s proximity of some place called Hanford. Where weapons grade Plutonium was made for the Manhattan project during World War II and thru the Cold War.

As the prestigious APBA Gold Cup event has been held at Tri-cities five times overall. With such luminaries as Dean Chenoweth, George Henley, Bill Muncey, Chip Hanauer and Jimmy Shane having won on the Mighty Columbia.

Meanwhile, Seattle has hosted the APBA Gold cup 14 times by my reckoning, the second most Post War following the Cup’s spiritual home of Detroit. Until either the late 1960’s or early 1970’s, since I cannot find an exact date when regulations changed.

As the Gold Cup race was then held at the previous year’s winner’s choice, ergo Home course. Seeing Seattle host the Gold Cup for five straight years between 1951-55, after Ted Jones and His revolutionary Miss Slo-Mo-Shun IV shocked the Boating world upon winning the 1950 event in Detroit With the Slo-Mo-Shun IV and V Hydroplanes capturing the next four Gold Cups!.

After returning to Detroit for 1956, Seattle held the event from 1957 to 1959. Then the race migrated to Las Vegas on Lake Mead, with no race being contested due to high winds.

Then firmly known as The “Jet City”, due to some ‘lil Aeroplane concern called Boeing. Seattle held the race in 1962, 1965 and 1967. Seven years later, and sandwiched between it’s Eastern neighbors Tri-Cities two events, the Gold Cup was back in Seattle for 1974.

The Gold Cup didn’t return to the shores of Lake Washington until 1981, and then hosted it’s penultimate race some Gory 38 years ago in 1985, Eureka!

Whilst Ye legendous’ Gold Cup didn’t return to Washington State overall for another three decades, before being held on the Columbia River at Tri-cities in 2015. Being the first time held in Eastern Washington since Gory 1984

As can my favourite Unlimited driver Andrew Tate add His name for a second time to match His father Mark’s two Gold Cup triumphs this August?

Or will Cory Peabody claim His second Gold Cup victory in-a-row? With teammate J. Michael Kelly saying not so fast Cory. I’m planning to win my second Gold Cup this year!

As these three Skipper’s are the only current Gold Cup winners in this year’s field. With three rookies looking to make the finals. Whilst I Don’t even want to contemplate what the “Over/Under” on how many Blowovers occur is?

While Don’t forget those fabulous Blue Angels precision Air show! When hopefully “The Bluest Skies You’ve ever Seen are in Seattle” won’t be obscured by Hazy Smoke from Forest Fires…

RETRO: Time Capsule of an Early Land Speed Record Holder

As move over Tom Sneva! This Gasman was way Ahead of You!

Although I’m guessing I’ve heard the name before, cannot say I’ve ever been curious about Sir Henry Segrave. For which the Segrave trophy is named in Honour of this Speed records pioneer.

Interestingly, Henry was born in Baltimore, Maryland in September, 1896 to an American Mother and Irish Father. And attended schooling in Ireland before attending College in England.

Enjoy the brief respite of His travails of Military service during World War I. Having been rushed thru Officer Training School. Henry was apparently known as the “Lion’s Cub” for His determined Trench fighting. Having thrown an Ammunition Belt at a German Soldier after His gun had become clogged in Mud, causing the enemy’s shot High and Hitting Him in the shoulder!

Recovering from this, Sir Henry next joined the RoyalFlying corps in 1915 and became a Fighter Pilot in 1916. Even shooting down a German two seater Aviatik on May 1st.

Segrave was later Hit by Anti-Aircraft artillery and crashed Heavily that July! And severely breaking His Ankle effectively ended His flying career.

But the funniest part is Henry bemoaning His being a terrible pilot and how the landings were the worst, which He was constantly “Mucking” Up! With Henry taking up Administrative roles until resigning His Royal Air force Commision in 1919.

Next Henry took up the emerging Boom of Motorsports, making His way onto Britain’s Sunbeam Works team. Racing in the 1922 French Grand Prix, where He was forced to retire.

Segrave triumphantly won the 1923 French Grand Prix in a Sunbeam! Along with winning the 1924 San Sebastian Grand Prix before retiring from the Sport in order to focus upon the exhilarating pursuit of Speed records.

As I believe these triumphs were set aboard a Grand Prix Sunbeam 1921 racecar? For which the name Sunbeam always makes me think of it’s latter years, when it was part of the Roots Group before Chrysler purchased it.

When some ‘Ol Codger’ named Carroll Shelby was commissioned to see if He could get a Ford “Hi-Po” 289cid Small block v-8 Shoehorned into what became known eventually as the Sunbeam tiger!

Having just learned that these 1964-67 Sunbeam tigers were so named in Honour of Henry Segrave’s record setting Tiger! With the Series I Tiger usiing a production Ford 260cid Small Block V-8. And the much rarer Mark II Tigers having standard 289cid V-8 lumps’ as Thar motivation.

Segrave set a total of three land Speed records, His first coming on March 16, 1926. Utilizing a 4-litre Sunbeam tiger named Ladybird, He set a record of 152.33mph at Ainsdale Beach on southport, England. With the record standing for just a month before another prominent land Speed record Chaser, J.G. Parry-Thomas broke it.

Then just over one year later, on March 29, 1927, Henry became the first person to record a speed over 200mph! Using a custom 1,000 Horsepower Sunbeam known affectionately as “the Slug.” (Or Mystery) Recorded a speed of 203.79mph on Daytona Beach’s Road Course.

As Daytona Beach’s sandy Beach Road course was the site of multiple land Speed records during the 1900, way before someplace “big bill” (France) had built inland in 1953. Perhaps Y’all have Heard of it? Someplace called Daytona International Speedway…

As the first recorded land Speed record set at Daytona Beach was in 1906 with Steam power! With Fred Marriott aboard His Stanley Rocket claiming a speed of 127.66mph.

With the Beach being the “Place” for land Speed records exclusively between 1927-1935 before Bonneville Salt flats took over the LSR scene. While NASCAR’s final race on the Beach was held in 1958.

Seagrave’s third and final land Speed record was set aboard His Golden Aero, which He used to up the record to 231.45mph, also at Daytona Beach Road course on March 11, 1929.

As Segrave Quit pursuit of any further land Speed records following witnessing the High Speed Death of Lee bible at Ornond Beach,  Florida two days later.

Henry turned His attenzione next to water Speed records, having had the Miss England I built in 1928 to recapture the Harmsworth trophy from the legendous’ Gar Wood and His Miss America’s.

As the boat used a single Napier Lion “Aero” (Aircraft) engine for propulsion. As Segrave believed the speed could be found in the Hull’s advanced Planing design instead of just raw, outright Horsepower.

As I love the fact that Woods “Sportingly” offered Segrave assistance in propeller and rudder design. And then Henry traveled to Miami and Defeated Wood for the first time in nine years at their Speedboat races!

Upon His return to Jolly ‘Ol England, Henry Segrave was Knighted for His Speed record achievements. Yet shortly after, on July 13, 1930, Segrave’s luck finally ran out!

Upon setting a new water Speed record on Windermere of 98.76mph in two recorded runs. Miss England II capsized on Her third run, instantly Killing it’s Chief Engineer. Whilst it’s Mechanic survived with just a broken Arm. Segrave would Die from massive lung Hemorrhaging at the Age of 33yrs Old that Fateful day…

As Sir Henry Segrave was the first person to simultaneously Hold the land and water Speed records, along with the first to go 200mph on land.

F1: Miami’s Sound Machine

Wasn’t that the SS Minnow Harbourside? Toot Toot, Ahoy Mateys!

It’s a strange world we live in, although suppose I should be glad that Formula One’s finally being recognized Stateside. Although it makes me wonder how come I discovered it Wayback in Gory 1986, Huh? Whilst if I did ever come across Der Terminator’, nee Michael Schumacher in the U.S. during the late ‘90’s or early oughts’ I totally would have recognized Him, Ja Volt!

http://www.nofenders.net/2009/11/schueys-legend-is-born.html

Whilst it now seems like a lifetime ago I was attending my Debutante Formula 1 race, the maiden Iceberg Grand Prix in The Valley of The Sun some Gory 33 years ago, Crikeys!

http://www.nofenders.net/2014/06/retro-phoenixs-debutant-formula-1-race.html

I have Never pretended to be an Engineer, and No, I Don’t typically stay at Holiday Inn’s either, Hya! But it seems somewhat Apropos that F1 is headed to Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium’s Parking lot racetrack, where Porpoising is the current Buzz Word in Formula 1! Since after all, Don’t the Miami Dolphins play some ‘lil ‘Ol Pigskin games Thar, Botta Boom, Chuh Ching!

What bothers me most about this Pogo Stick phenomenon of bouncing Up ‘N Down race circuits straightaways, is that Formula 1 bills itself as the Pinnacle of Motorsport! And this Bouncy Bounce routine, which Austin F1 Sherpa Claudio’ told me you could see All of the cars doing repeatedly at Imola is simply embarrassing for such a Technological Sport!

For Mwah, the easy fix would be for the FIA to mandate the chassis being raised slightly off the ground, which I know would alter the intended Ground Effects and potentially slow the Cars down, slightly. Although F1 Engineers have a reputation of prodigiously clawing back Speed yearly…

Whilst I believe that Racer’s Marshall Pruett said that Indy Cars solved this similar problem by simply installing stiffer springs to cancel out the Porpoising…

Yet that sounds like a Horrible solution for the Drivers! While I take Mercedes George Russell’s comments seriously about how the F1 Drivers cannot sustain the physical effects of Porpoising over an entire 23 Grands Prix season! With the lanky Englishman noting how He’d suffered real Back and Chest Pain at Imola inflicted by the Mercedes W13’s Harsh Porpoising tendencies.

As this made me wonder out loud, are Old Racing Drivers like Cripled NFL Players afterwards, needing Walkers to get round? Not to mention having top line Dentists on Speed Dial to fix All of Thar teeth and fillings lost over the Bumps!

Along with Back Specialists, meaning I guess it’s a good thingy’ they get the Mega Millions contracts up front, El Correctomundo?

As something technically needs to be mandated in order to solve this Aerodynamic problem, which apparently Didn’t show up in All of the Super Computer CFD Modeling and Wind Tunnel  testing, which seems a Wee Bitamyte’ Odd to Mwah. Although perhaps we’ll All be noticing the Bogo Stick routine more along Hard Rock Drive vs. those incoming waves and Sea Breezes Harbourside, Ahoy?

So did Y’all notice Lake Rock Hard’s scenic Harbour trackside Sunday? As the Turn 7 Faux Marina has to be the Silliest part of the entire race circuit layout for Mwah!

As I’d already read about the various pleasure Yachts Not being able to go Anywhere, since Thars No Bloody lake! But then I read that there’s Not even any water in this Artificial lake, and it’s just some Faux Seafoam Blue material instead. With the land locked Yachts having been trucked in just for this event!

Thus being Blind, I won’t be able to discern if there were any Party Goers aboard these Mega Yachts? Although they would make a novel “grandstand” Seating option for the weekend. As why not “Plumb” them with lavatories and Bars for those who can afford them, Eh?

Especially due to the exorbitant F1 ticket prices! Since after all, this is a Parking lot race circuit, although Hopefully NO Caesars Palace Rinky Dink layout!

Whilst I believe I’ve read somewheres’ that the inaugural Miami Grand Prix is Sold Out capped at 80,000 Attendance and that tickets started at $900.00, aye Karumba! Having just read that Friday Only’s General Admission ticket cost $300!

Although I do recall the excitement and desire of attending an inaugural Grands Prix which I’ve Done twice, i.e.; Arizona’s 1989 June 4th “Sweatfest” and the 2012 Circuit Of The Americas F1 “launch” event!

But I certainly Hope that they won’t pull another El Stupidio rope A-Dope Let’s Get Ready to Rumble in the Jungle Red Carpet Drivers intro like Liberty Media pulled once in Austin, which was Epically Dumb!

And having “watched,” Err listened to the various Formula 1 teams Drivers in Thar Stetson Hats participating in lassoing competitions at COTA, does this mean F1 Drivers will be required to Wrassle Gators inMiami?

Thus for Mwah, I’m more intrigued over the two differing Chassis Designs currently leading the way in F1. Which once again, Not being an Engineer, I only have a rudimentary understanding of the differences between the de riggour Push Rod Front suspension layout vs. Pull rod suspension, which presumably the latter sits lower on the chassis’s “Nose” and gives “cleaner” Aerodynamics for the rest of the Car?

I only bring this up since our current F1 Constructors and Drivers Points leader Scuderia Ferrari is running the conventional Push Rod layout vs. second place Red Bull’s Pull rod layout. But as we also know, it’s the entire package layout that makes a racecar successful, i.e.; Chassis, Aerodynamics, engine and Driver, albeit Don’t know which is most important?

Much has been made over Ferrari’s resurgence being tied to their engine’s “Power” revival. Whilst Red Bull’s Honda derived lump’ isn’t No Slouch either, with the mighty Mercedes powered teams seeming to be suffering most so far this season…

And with two dare I say it? Fairly equal drivers at Thar respective keyboards, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen were knotted 2-2 in Grands Prix victories prior to Miami.

Hence, with All of the Gimmickery of Faux Harbours and monumentous Hype being engineered by Liberty Media for it’s debut Miami race, far away from it’s intended Downtown Waterfront Haunt. I sincerely Hope the race lives up to All it’s being made out for. Since it seems a long ways from the Downtown Streets of Phoenix, Arizona and nearby Ostrich Festivals. For which when I think of the words Miami Grand Prix, I immediately think of the CART/PPG IndyCar races at Tamiammi Park and Arse-sumedly where Liberty Media wanted to be; On Biscayne Bay Boulevard, where the late Ralph Sanchez first brought IMSA GTP Sports Cars in 1983. Which even saw ‘Ol Hollywood’, aka Danny Sullivan starring in another typically ludicrous  episode of Miami Vice as a racing driver No less! As Queue the Miami vice theme music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jswHsTJQL_c&t=4s

Not to mention a short lived spell of CART/PPG IndyCar World Series races run thru Tamiami Park in the mid-1980’s, before Sanchez’s permanent Homestead Miami Speedway facility opened in November, 1995, serving as Indy Cars season finale for several years…

HYDROS: 2019 H1 Unlimited Season Kicks Off this Weekend

But how many Hydros' will show up down South, Y'all?

Once again it's Summertime, which invariably means it's time for the Unlimited Hydroplanes to spin up Thar Turbines 'N G-O Racing, by kicking off Thar season this weekend in "Sweet Home, Alabama..."

Yet once again, the sport seems to simply be treading water, with my very unofficial count of H1 Unlimited Hulls competing this season being in the Single digits for the first time in years I can remember. With a paltry nine Hulls currently listed upon the sport's Official H1 Unlimited website.

Although by my very unscientific count, I'm expecting only six boats to arrive in Guntersville, Alabama for this year's southern cup Lake Guntersville Hydrofest taking place June 28-30th. Since I'm unsure of two Hydro's status,  Thee U-3 Go Fast Racing sponsored by Grig's Ace Hardware, the only remaining Piston powered Unlimited Hydroplane in the Fleet. Propelled by a twin-turbocharged Allison V-12 powerplant. along with the U-7 Spirit of Detroit; presumably as partial season competitors? While the newly anointed U-99.9 Miss Rock won't debut 'til Seafair.

Although it's great news learning that Rob Graham, owner of the U-12 Graham Trucking has stepped up financially, not only buying the old Miss Rock Hydroplane after its previous owner unexpectedly died! But will also campaign two Hydros' this season with the addition of his team's second entry, the U-98.

As hopefully the battle for this year's National High Points Championship will be a three boat race between the newly anointed U-1 Delta/REALTRAC, which I prefer knowing as the Northwest's Les Schwab Boat with my favourite Driver Andrew Tate at its controls, vs. Jimmy Shane and his U-6 Miss Home Street Bank and the aforementioned U-12 with perennial winner J. Michael Kelly at its tiller. Which naturally, this trio were at the top of the Testing Time Sheets.

Arguably, these three Hulls will run circles round the U-11 J&B's presents Reliable Diamond Tools, with Tommy Thompson at the controls, which has worked its way up to being the fourth fastest Boat.

Followed by the U-440 Bucket List Racing and the U-98 Graham Trucking American dream with the season's only Rookie Pilot Onboard, which is an unproven commodity at the moment.

As All of this uncertainty over Boat count is part of the reason that Detroit elected to forego holding the Sport's Holy Grail, the historic APBA Gold Cup this year, due to concerns over the lack of Hydroplanes contesting it's storied race.

While Detroit's annual Hydrofest will Host the lower tier Grand Prix Boats as Thar Headliner Act instead, which I guess Y'all could consider as the Indy Lights contingent of Hydroplanes, Eh?

Lastly, it seems odd that the State's only Hometown entity, the former U-27 Dalton Industries Hull driven by Cal Phipps, which last competed at Seafair last year, running as the U-1861 in commemoration of Seattle's longtime association with Fan favourite Jerky Boat' Oh boy Oberto.   Is apparently not contesting it's Home race? Since I cannot find any information pertaining to either Wiggins Racing, Headquartered in Rainbow City, Al or Cal Phipps current status...

NOTE
Just prior to publishing this story, I finally discerned via H1 Unlimiteds somewhat annoying for "My Gal" Lucy', my ARSE-Steamed Screen Reader to Navigate website, Hey! Just put All of the Freakin' News in the News section wills Yuh! but I digress...

Indeed as predicted, jus six Hulls are entered for this weekend's Season Opener, with the most glowing omission being the defending National High Points Champion U-1 of Andrew Tate, due to a scheduling conflict; WTF? As that's not a good way to start off your Championship Defense!

While Thee only KuhNuck' Boat Driver in the field, Bert, "Not Ernie!" Henderson and the U-7 Spirit of Detroit will make their H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes debut outside of Michigan...
