AUTOS: The Car that spawned a Rock Band

1973 De Tomaso Pantera on display in Arizona. (The Tomaso Collection)

Hard core Ford enthusiasts will know what this early model De Tomaso Pantera has in common with the sign of the Cat, Meow! No, that’s not Cat Stevens, Hya!

Can Y’all say cougar, as in Lincoln Mercury? Being sold by the very same Lincoln Mercury Dealer network stateside, arriving a decade ahead of that Hard Rock Glam Metal Band Pantera.

Move Over Penske, we’re visiting the Martin Auto Museum instead

Tomaso taking a spin in His Daddy’s (1964) T-Bird at the Martin Auto Museum. (The Tomaso Collection)

As where’s ‘Ol Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen and that Hot Rod Lincoln when Yuhs need Him?

VIDEO: Hot Rod Lincoln

Thanks to Snowbyrd MJ’ signing up for a Senior’s guided tour, Wayback’ on January 15th. Inadvertently we learned about an unknown gem of an Auto Museum in Glendale, Arizona. Which the Museo’s brochure proclaiming it’s the largest car museum in Arizona.

The museum has approx. 185-187 vehicles, obviously with something for everyone to see. As suddenly I was on the telephone talking with Bob, who’s a volunteer at the museum. Asking if they had any Ford Mustang Mach 1’s on hand?

Nope, we’ve got a 1968 Bullitt’ Replicar, a ’67 and ’64 I think He said? Although it would have to be a 1964 1 /2, since the Mustang became available to the public in April of that year. Which the early Stangs’ are designated, if memory serves me correctly…

While No Bob’s your Uncle jokes here, Hya! Also mentioning something about two Shelby’s. Telling me about hod one had only six miles on it’s odometer; having been assembled from parts in the 1980’s.

Then He asked me if I’d ever heard of a Tucker? Telling me the museum had number 20-something of the 51 built. Number 23 perhaps? Claiming it cost the museum $1.7m plus several thousand in paperwork. Think He said $11k?

This would coincide nicely with the number $1.8m bandied about during my later visit. While the Tucker 48 in question is No. 21 of 51…

Naturally I had to launch into telling Him about how America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, WA also has a Tucker in its vast collection, He mentioned something about another Tucker owner placing His prized on the second floor of His building…

When He told me He was a Chevy guy, I couldn’t resist and playfully said we were doing Ok until you told me that, Hya! Explaining how I’m a Died-in-the-wool FoMoCo’ (Ford Motor Company)  Guy!

As Bob wanted to tell me about His 1940’s Packard He owned and His next door neighbours cars, including a 2022 Shelby Mustang, which I think He said had 740 Ponies? (740Bhp)

Before we needed to hang-up, so Bob and His other volunteer Jeff could get back to leading the tour that Snowbyrd MJ’ and company were on. Telling us to come back and visit on Thursday’s, when they’re both there.

Naturally, immediately after hanging up, I “googled” a query for Martin Auto Museum in Glendale, AZ. As their website proclaims Martin Auto Museum and Event Center at 43rd Ave. and Thunderbird Road.

A very cursory visit to the website’s About Us page mentions how they’ve now got over 170 vehicles in their collection, with the museum having begun in 2005. Quickly outgrowing its original premises, a new location was established in 2022.

As the museum is dedicated to the preservation of Classic Cars, Hod Rods, Customs and Imports. Along with an extensive Automotive memorabilia

Including vintage gas pumps, signage, etc.

There’s over 700 parking spaces for hosting events. Along with three separate “event” rooms.

There’s the Cadillac Class room, being 3,500 square feet. Seating up to 80 people. Plus Audio/Video equipment.

Next is the Mustang meeting room at 4,900 square feet. Which seats up to 150 people. With Audio/Video and a projector.

And then there’s the Bristol Ballroom at 12,500 square feet. Seating up to 500 people for weddings, etc.

As it sounds like its got friendly staff volunteers and an awesome collection of Automobilia, which I couldn’t wait to go visit when in Arizona this February…

Nutter Butter, Mars Bars and “A Bridge Over Troubled Waters”

As where’s ‘Ol Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon when Yuhs need ‘em?

Miriam, please call Cletus Snow and ask Him to meet me here in Brownsburg at the Oasis Diner for lunch Thursday. Tell I’ll make it worth His while and yes, He can bring His dog Butch too. And have HR put Him on our payroll as a special consultant.

Thanks for meeting me Mr. Snow. Yeah, I ordered Pigs in a Blanket for Butch…

Your son Roscoe tells me business is pretty slow right now. Yeah, you don’t have to tell me about the price of Diesel! You should see how much we’re paying to run our Artics’ (Articulated Lorry’s) around Europe!

I hear that Billy Jo Bradshaw is gonna open up the Grand tetons for Oil explorations. Hell, its not like Jackson Hole or Telluride have been getting any snow lately, and that should help with Gas prices…

I need you to run down to Port Miami and pick up a load of Thom McCan shoes. Uh, Billy Jo Bradshaw bought a shipload of wingtips for His office workers.

Yeah, I told Billy Jo you wear a size 16. Why’s that Mr. Winchester? Whale’ Billy Jo says shoe size tells a lot about a Man’s… And I told Him We’d take them off His hands. As they’ll make a great associate sponsor for our Armani Canamax racecars. And help yourself to a few pairs of loafers for Butch…

I rented you a CT5 Blackwing Caddy’ since I know you don’t like flying, and there’ll be the usual Cascadia Sleeper-rig waiting for you and they’ve already cleared customs.

Armani Canamax Racing, how may I direct your call? Mr. Winchester, there’s a Tango Mattel on line four. He says its urgent!

Hello? Oh, your Wade Wetterly’s aide de Kamp Mr. Mattel, how can I help you?

Yeah, I saw the photo of the driftwood numbers on Myrtle Beach. Those Neptune satellite images Elroid sent to the Cal State Tribune were real doozies. Uhm, did I say Myrtle Beach?

What’s that Mr. Mattel? Special Agents Bartholomew T. Fife and Otis C. Taylor spent the last nine months with magnifying glasses looking at the photo and saw somebody wearing a Canamax emblazoned coat

Yeah, it was a publicity stunt for our Formula Libre racing team’s arrival in Miami with our car numbers 86 and 47…

You want us to recreate it for a promotional picture for a project Russell Lovett’s doing for Billy Jo Bradshaw, Ok, that soon?

Miriam, get Russell Lovett for me. Yes Mr. Lovett I see, the number 1122 for an ariel photo promoting a car race around Maryland’s T. Rowe Price Stadium, home of the Minutemen Football team on Mr. Bradshaw’s 65th birthday. Very good Sir.

You’ve already contacted the local Special Olympics for volunteers. What’s that? You’ve got a bunch of T-Shirts with One Nation One Race on them you promised them; they’re a tax write-off? No, we won’t tell the kids what they’re doing Sir, and they can get their free T-Shirts completely dirty…

Miriam, find a nearby YMCA’s gymnasium we can rent for the weekend; tell them I’ll pay triple the going rate, and tell Cletus Snow to call me toot-sweet.

Snowman, after you drop off the shoes. What’s that, they’re too large for Butch?

Look, as soon as they’re all unloaded, I need you to run up to Nabisco’s distribution center in Hoboken, as we’ve still got an active account with them. Yeah, they’ll know what I’m after, and don’t let Butch eat too many of the fudge busters for your sake. As somebody will have to clean the cab…

Hello Kids, my name is Mr. Winchester and I have a fun project for you. Is everybody wearing their (free) T-Shirts, good!

Ok, I need you to open up the packages of Nutter butter, Mega Stuffed Oreos, Fudgebusters, Triple Double Neapolitan Oreos, Big Stuff Oreos, Ho Ho’s, Ding dons, Bite Size Oreos, Irish cream Ginger Snaps and put them in the garbage cans in the middle of the room.

What’s that? Yes, you can eat as many as you like, as long as you promise not to get sick. But we need them all unwrapped by the end of the day…

Snowman, this is Winferd’ do you have your ears on? Yeah, I had Snow-bunny’ (Roscoe Snow) set me up one of these CB radios in my office. What’s your 10-20 good Buddy? Ok, I need you to pick up a Transfer Titan (Dump truck) for a load at the Carmel YMCA. And then deliver it to Paighton Beach where Snow-bunny will meet you with His Bobcat.

Governor Daniels has issued a permit to use Paighton Beach on the Wabash and closed the park to all visitors.

Yeah, we were gona use Lake Monroe but the Girl Scouts are holding camp there and we don’t want to give them any free publicity…

No, just dump your load at Paighton Beach and Snow-bunny will take care of the rest. Nah, its ok if a few Seagulls get sick, as I alredy contacted Harold donner of Fish & Wildlife. And the Crabs should take care of the rest after the tide eventually goes out…

Miriam, get Russell and Cletus Snow for me ASAP! OH, that’s right, I sent Snowman Up North Eh to pickup some refreshments and goodies for the Big, Beautiful Birthday. I’ll get ahold of Him myself.

Well at least get His son Roscoe in here immediately!

Snowman this is Winferd, do you have your ears on? What, you’re stuck in a 33km backup on Route 9’s Gordie How bridge. Yeah those Hosers just love our Pepperjack cheese…

Otay, did you get the O’flaughtery’s brewskies’ and Sunderland’s powdered doughnuts?

No that’s Ok, I’ll discuss my problem with Snow-bunny instead. Roger that, 10-7 and catch Yuhs on the flip side HeeHee!

Yes Mr. Winchester, you asked to see me. No I haven’t seen the photographs yet. You just saw them? What’s wrong with the numbers, I spread them out on Paighton Beach with my bobcat per the instructions that a Mr. Mattel faxed me from Florida.

Do I realize I spelled 2112 instead of 1122? Nope, I just did what the instructions said Mr. Winchester!

Uhm, I guess that’s why Snowman’s taking so long to get back across the Gordie Howe bridge, Eh?

No, I don’t think the Power Trio’s got a Gig down here, but I listen to Country…

IndyCar, World Cup and lot’s of smoke

Is the World Cup over yet?

“Heard it in a love song, Heard it in a love song, Heard it in a love song, Can't be wrong”

VIDEO: Heard It In a Love Song

It takes news a long time to reach thoust mystical Isle ‘O Nofendersville. First the Pony Express riders must stop to water their Horses, and then they have to paddle by canoe, Oh Never Mind!

I first began hearing whispers that thee Cat’, aka Felix-the-Cat’ (Rosenqvist) was leaving Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) Wayback on June 24th.

Then I realized I hadn’t listened to a Marshall Pruett The Week in IndyCar podcast in ages. And late to the party, I tuned into His June 25th episode five days later, and Shazam!

Pruett mentioned how His Head was about to explode over the fluidity of Silly Season during the Road America race weekend. (June 19-21) Saying one source He trusts had told Him next year’s McLaren lineup will be Pato O’Ward, Felix Rosenqvist and Scott Dixon. And don’t be surprised if two or more Key team personnel from Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) also defect, Err go to Mclaren.

Pruett said Zackery’ Brown isn’t exactly the most liked person in the paddock, but He sees Browns tactics similar to what losing NFL teams do after every Super bowl. When the winning team’s assistant coaches are hired as new Head Coaches and unprotected players go to new teams. And Dixon’s true value would be bringing infinite knowledge of how CGR ticks and what makes them the current Super bowl Champions.

Interesting angle upon Rosenqvist’s departure. Saying that after winning the Indy 500 you’d have thought MSR would have made it either known or a priority to “lock-up” Felix’s contract extension. But MSR apparently never reached out to the Cat while His phone was blowing up from other teams. And Felix apparently felt “unwanted” at MSR and took a “better” offer…

Then the following day,  read Marshall Pruett’s July 1st Silly Season update. Stating  that sources have now confirmed the Dixon to Mclaren rumour as being a done Dealio, along with the Cat’s arrival. Noting how having Rosenqvist, the current Indy 500 winner and Dixon gives endless marketing and sponsorship opportunities. Not to mention a greater shot at winning the coveted Borg Warner trophy.

Yet immediately afterwards, I had a different take on the situation. McLaren’s “Golden Boy” (Pato) O’Ward is simply getting shown-up by Lundgaard this year. So perhaps to keep Pato happy. Who after all is the series most popular driver. (And face of Arrow McLaren) Which I’m guessing translates into sponsorship dinero, ci? Zakery Brown decided to jettison Lundgaard in favour of Pato’s best buddy the Cat? Just a thought…

Having connected the dots prior to the Mid-Ohio IndyCar weekend and Arrow McLaren’s Charm offensive led by Team Principal Tony Kanaan. For which my thought was confirmed when Kanaan reportedly Bear Hugged O’Ward after winning the race in victory lane. Need I say more?

Suppose if I really think about it, you could “see” Lundgaard’s perceived flaws upon His behaviour when celebrating His maiden IndyCar win at Toronto three years ago. Having shaved off His mustache and crowing like the second coming after the victory. Which I recall reading or hearing somewhere about how Bobby Rahal was rolling His eyes over Lundgaard’s celebratory “antics”.

Yet Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing hadn’t won a race in three years, and hasn’t won since!

And whatever you think of Lundgaard, who definitely is a talented driver. All I can hear in my head is Alexander Rossi’s famous Quip about “I’m not here to make Friends!”

From Marshall’s July 7th podcast, I came to the conclusion that Lundgaard’s best landing spot will be Andretti global. Yet ten days later during the Nashville weekend, it  sounded pretty certain that an extension for Marcus Ericsson was imminent– and may have already happened?

While its also obvious that with McLaren’s Sports Car programmes around the Globe. They give both Rosenqvist and Dixon longer runways for their racing careers…

Meanwhile, and I’m happy for IndyCar and FOX. But it bothers me over how much noise is being made over the massive TV ratings increase. Since its got nothing to do with IndyCar itself, just casual Fans sticking round after World Cup Football matches instead…

FOX uses World Cup to push IndyCar TV ratings to 15 year High

Meaning what will next year’s “true” IndyCar ratings look like? And are sponsors really drinking this Kool-Aid?

Yet even if Nashville had happened as planned and gathered it’s massive TV ratings trove. Momentum would have been killed by the three weeks break following Nashville, Yawn!

While the Silly Season spicket is wide open now, with far too much to scribble here! Other than during Nashville, Thars’ two seats available at Coyne, Foyt and Juncos Hollinger Racing. With one seat available at Andretti, Ganassi, Meyer Shank Racing and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Although I’ve already mentioned above, I think there’s no vacancies at Andretti Global. Then IndyCar Radio’s Davey Hamilton said Mick Schumacher’s out of a ride at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, (RLLR) who are selling their third IndyCar Charter. With plenty more Silly Season fodder to scribble about in another riveting No Fenders story…

MotorCup des Nations Grand finale

What’s that Bon Scott? It’s a long way to the Top if You wanna Rock ‘n Roll!

For those of you still reading this zany, Madcap No Fenders MotorCup Fairytale, “We Salute You!”

As I really hadn’t intended upon scirbblin’ this, or running so long, and cannot “See” doing this again! But I did enjoy learning of several drivers names I’d never heard of before. Their countries and where they’re located…

Hey, at least like FIFA, I didn’t go for 27 straight days in-a-row with this nonsense. Or subject Y’all to 39 days and 104 Gory Matches!

But think we all needed some distraction from that super fizzle, Fart Nashville weekend! Yuhs know where everyone just wanted to be done! And it was so Hot that they were selling bottled water for the reduced price of a single George Warshtinton’, Blimey!

Quarter Finals

The eight teams making the MotorCup Quarter Finals were: Australia vs. Denmark; Netherlands vs. Germany; New Zealand vs. Japan, and Mexico vs. Italy.

Denmark easily handled DJ willyP’s squad. With Will Power and Co. unable to slow down the two Christians. (Rasmussen & Lundgaard) Winning Two-Nil.

Circus Maximus and His Orange Army (Netherlands) crushed Germany Five-Nil, Ja Volt!

New Zealand and Japan saw Scott Dixon vs. Takuma Sato in a penalty kick shootout. With Japan prevailing 4-2 in PK’s.

And whilst Kimi Antonelli and Italy gave Mexico a run for it’s Peso. Mexico prevailed 3-2 with a second half stoppage time goal by Pato O’Ward…

Semi Finals

Our four semi-finalists saw Netherlands vs. Denmark and Japan vs. Mexico.

Circus Maximus and His Orange Marauders lined up against the two Christians at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium.

In the 33rd minute, overloading the right side, Nyck de Bries barely beat the offside flag. Then flicked a pass to Max Verstappen who promptly smashed the ball in the back of the net!

Two minutes into stoppage time, Kevin Bacon’ Magnussen booted a set piece to a wide open Christian Rasmussen who headed the ball into the lower left corner of the net. With the Halftime score being 1-1.

In the 57th minute, Christian Lundgaard blasted a free kick against the defender’s wall. Ricocheting past a perplexed Thierry Vermeulen, giving the Danes a 2-1 lead.

The Loon’, (Lundgaard) had been taunting Max the whole game and smugly said what about that Free kick Max!

Becoming increasingly annoyed, in the 69th minute during a Denmark substitution, Verstappen pulled Lundgaard’s pants down and said what do you think about that Smart arse!

Max was immediately shown a red card and the Dutch had to play a man down for the remainder of the match. While Lundgaard got the last laugh, scoring His second goal in the 86th minute and then bowing towards Netherlands bench! With Denmark winning 3-1.

Playing at sofi Stadium before a raucous crowd. Although Ryo Hirakawa did score off a sublime pass from K-Squared’ (Kamui Kobayashi) for a One-Nil lead.

Japan was simply outgunned by Mexico, specifically Pato O’Ward and Daniel Suarez, with the pair scoring a goal apiece. Before Rafael Villagomez scored Mexico’s third and final goal in the 84th minute, securing a 3-1 victory.

Third place

Unsuccessfully lobbying FIFA’s Gianni Van token to overturn Verstappen’s red card suspension, Coach Lammers had to revise His starting lineup.

Playing at Toronto’s BMO Field, Japan played a steady, consistent ring around the rosy game of keep-away, preventing Netherlands mounting an attack. Before Renger van der Zande got so incensed and tackled Takuma Sato in the Box.

Taku-san brushed Himself off and then serenely skipped a slow roller ground shot past Thierry Vermeulen with Japan winning One-Nil.

Finale

And then there were two! With our mythical MotorCup des Nations final being held at Mexico city’s Estadio Azteca.

The 80,000-plus sold out crowd erupted in uncontrollable pandemonium when El Tri’ marched down the field and Rafael Villagomez drilled a shot into the back of the net in the match’s fifth minute!

Mexico simply dominated the opening 20-plus minutes of the match, with several shots on goal. Including a monster save by Benjamin Pederson.

In the 28th minute, Christian Lundgaard took a Free kick from the 25-yard line and beautifully curled an arcing cannon blast over the outstretched fingers of Ian Aguilera.

Yet whilst Lundgaard was still busy celebrating His goal, Mexico expertly marched down field, with Salvador de Alba passing to Daniel Suarez, who back-flicked to Pato O’ward who rocketed a shot into the goal’s upper corner. Seeing El Tri’ resume the lead 2-1 just 61 seconds later, Ole!

In the 44th minute, Suarez scored off an assist by Ricardo Escotto, with the raucous Elstadio erupting into delirium over Mexico’s 3-1 lead at Halftime.

The 66th minute saw O’Ward score His second goal of the match on a magnificent give and go with Villagomez. Giving El Tri’ a presumably unbeatable 4-1 lead, before Coach Fernandez substituted His star players with their counterparts on the bench and Mexico won 4-1 to the delight of the partisan crowd!

As Bugs bunny would say, That’s all folks!

Ironically, I chose my two finalists and eventual winner prior to learning about this year’s dramatic team changes at Arrow McLaren…

Although Canadians are well known for their politeness. Nonetheless, being a sold out match at BC Stadium in Vancouver, they’d brought their Hockey sticks and were making a rapturous noise pounding them on the stadium’s aisles before kickoff…

In the 13th minute, Thee Mayor ‘O Hinchtown’ (Hinchcliffe) passed to Roman De Angelis at the top of the Box. Roman then skirted past Brendan Hartley, passed to Zacharie Robischon, who booted a left foot shot past Jaxon Evans. As Bedlam erupted Up North Eh!

Then in the 99th minute, due to excessive stoppage time, ScottyMac’ (McLaughlin) headed the ball past astonished Misha Goikhberg off a booming kick from Earl Bamber, sending the match into extra time.

After two scoreless extra time periods, with the match knotted at 1-1, a silence fell upon BC Stadium with penalty kicks looming.

The visitors went first, with The Gis’, aka Shane van Gisbergen scoring, before Canada’s Parker Thomson scored. Tied at 3-3, Marcus Armstrong cooly scored before Lance Stroll stepped up for His shot. As Lance promptly kicked His shot into the hands of Jaxon Evans. Tipping the score 4-3 in New Zealand’s favour.

Then Dixon stepped up and calmly put His PK’ into the upper righthand corner, giving New Zealand the win much to the Home crowd’s dismay!

Would anyone else other than Circus Maximus dare being Captain?

Match report

Although a feisty lot, Ireland’s Boyz’ were simply outmanned by the “firepower” of Max Verstappen’s Orange Army! Especially with it’s back line all being World Rally championship racers…

Playing in the Mercedes Dome in New Orleans, Circus Maximus and Co. crushed Ireland 6-1. Their only blemish being to let Alex Dunne score a goal at match’s end when the Dutch had pulled their Starters to rest for Quarter finals play…

Coach Nico is certainly adept to speaking His mind and knowing what He wants, and is well suited to lead this squad of veterans. But will they look up to Him and His coaching tactics?

Match report

In the 27th minute, Germany made a run resulting in a set piece. Maximilian Gunther booted the ball to a streaking Mick Schumacher who towered over Scatback’ Lando Norris. Who although a nifty dribbler was left winging over how was He supposed to stop Mick from scoring on Him in the Air?

As Coach Button immediately substituted Oliver Rowlan (FE) for Norris to shore up England’s back line.

In the 55th minute, Nico Hulkenberg fowled Sir Lewis inside the Box. With Captain Hamilton serenely slotting home the PK’ to tie the score at 1-1.

Coach Nico substituted Andre Lotterer, (WEC) for Kirchhofer, and Benjamin Goethe, (WEC) for Wehrlein.

In the 79th minute, the Goethe brothers methodically worked downfield with Oliver passing to Laurn Heinrich who curled a zinger past Freddie Slater, with Germany going onto win 2-1.

El Matador, aka Coach Sainz had His hands full trying to get His front line to play together. Since all three were towering figures known for winning, His son was often overlooked by the others…

Match report

Frederico Suave (Alonso) was heard during the coin toss boasting to Taku-san He’d won two F1 World Championships vs. His two Indianapolis 500 victories. Yet Sato politely said you know me. “No Attack, No Chance!”

Both sides had their chances, with thee Pinball Wizard (Marquez) missing wide right, and Ryo Hirakawa clanking to top of the bar. Yet Marquez and Alonso wrestled for control of the ball, before Marquez twisted His ankle in the 48th minute.

Marquez was replaced by thee Martinator’, aka Jorge Martin. (MGP) And as Martin, Alonso and the Smooth Operator (Sainz Jr) called for the ball. Japan seized upon a counter-attack with K-Squared’ (Kobayashi) drilling a shot into the back of the net off an assist from Sato.

As Spain lost One-Nil while Sato thanked All the boyz’ for playing so well together…
