The 2013 Viper GTS: Americas First, Last and Only Word in Speed

The Viper GTS line of cars has always been Dodge's high-end, European-style sports cars. Representing the high-end of GM's market, they have been a hit at auto shows all over the world, and are exceedingly popular among speed enthusiasts. With a V10 engine, lightweight construction and incredible amounts of horsepower, it can outrun and out corner almost any other street legal vehicle on the market. It also costs much less than its Japanese or German counterparts, making it an attractive option for street and weekend racers.

The 2013 Viper is, unlike the two previous generations of Viper, a completely new design. Rather than updating older frames and layouts, the decision was made to develop an entirely new engine, body and frame. This maximizes speed and performance and enabled Dodge to throw out many of the limitations and compromises inherent in previous Viper designs. It thus has power, features and handling unlike any other Viper. It is also larger, longer and heavier, with a unique design and layout.

Unlike almost any other modern car, the 2013 Viper GTS has an enormous hood, with the cabin of the car pushed into the rear third of the vehicle. This has been done to make room for the enormous 640 hp V10 engine, which is among the most powerful ever to have been placed in an American sports car. In fact, it produces more torque than any other naturally aspirated street legal car. This enables the 2013 Viper GTS to travel at almost 200mph in a straight line. It also has superb acceleration, going from 0 to 60 in under five seconds. This enables it to compete with many Italian super cars in terms of speed and acceleration.

The 2013 Viper GTS is also the first Viper to integrate traction and steering controls to maximize handling and ensure that the vehicle is very easy and tame to drive. While it has a manual transmission only, dashboard lights supplement the tachometer to ensure that drivers shift at the right moment. The vehicle has advanced, computer-controlled traction control which enables the wheels to grip and brake independently and perfectly, ensuring perfect handling even in the hands of an unskilled driver. This also enables the Viper to corner much better than previous models, although it retains the FR layout and does not have all-wheel drive. The independent braking system uses ceramic disc brakes, enabling it to go from top speed to a dead stop in seconds...

Formula One Season Starts March 16-18

The upcoming action for 2012 with the F1 betting odds promises to be as exciting as ever with the opening race from Melbourne on March 16^th through 18^th as the Australian Grand Prix will take place.  The F1 season runs through November with the 20^th and final event taking place on November 23-25 in Saul Paulo with the Formula 1 Grande Premix Do Brasil 2012.

Last year’s Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel beat the F1 betting odds with a win in the Australian Grand Prix.  Vettel is from Germany and has 36 career podiums. Last year he drove for Red Bull and became the youngest double world champion in F1 history. 

Vettel has had an intense rivalry with teammate Mark Webber.  Webber is coming off a frustrating season in which he finished third in the standings and was outshone by Vettel.  Webber, who hails from New South Wales, won just one race last year but he has 30 career podiums.

Jenson Button from the United Kingdom finished 2^nd in the F1 standings last year driving for the famed McLaren team.  He has 43 podiums and 1 world championship. Last year he became McLaren’s top driver as he eclipsed teammate Lewis Hamilton with 3 wins and 9 podiums. Lewis Hamilton finished 5^th in the standings last year and has 90 podiums with 1 world championship.  Hamilton had three total wins last year.

Fernando Alonso from Spain finished 4^th in the F1 standings last year and has 73 career podiums with 2 world championships.  Alonso drives for Ferrari with teammate Felipe Massa and clearly outperformed Massa last year. He trailed Red Bull’s Mark Webber by just 1 point.  Massa finished 6^th overall in the standings last year and has 33 career podiums.  The Brazilian failed to make the podium last year which was his 10^th season in the circuit in which he had his 100^th start.

Michael Schumacher, who was the dominant win machine a decade ago, has 154 career podiums and 7 world championships.  Schumacher led marked improvement for the Mercedes team as his fourth place finish in Canada was the team’s best result in a year.  Schumacher retired after narrowly losing the title to Fernando Alonso but launched his comeback in 2010.  He made is fame with Ferrari and has found driving for Mercedes a more difficult challenge than anticipated.  His teammate Nico Rosberg finished 7^th, one place ahead of the legendary German...

Insuring a High-Speed Vehicle

Sports cars are built for performance. They're generally small, with sleek lines and fine details. They're built for driving, often with only two doors, and sometimes with only two seats. They are not passenger vehicles, where the focus is on the ride. Instead, they are designed to be fierce, fabulous, and most importantly fast.

Take a Defensive Driving Class: Not only will a hands-on defensive driving class help you learn to drive your sports car in a safer manner, it will also earn you a discount on your insurance. Most insurers discount policies up to 3% for up to three years, and when that three-year term expires, drivers can take another class and re-instate their discount.

Consider a Multi-Car Policy: You can save money on your auto insurance by bundling the coverage for your sports car with the coverage for any other cars in your family - even if one of those cars is a minivan, SUV or sedan. Most insurers will discount the less expensive car, but it's still cheaper to have two cars on one policy than maintain separate coverage. If you own a home, you can maximize your savings by also bundling your home insurance with your auto policy.

These are just three of the ways that the cost of insuring a high-speed vehicle can be reduced, but there are many others. The best advice when shopping for coverage is to ask the agent directly, "Are there any other discounts that apply to me?"

Monty’s Inferno...

So I know this is OLD news; but - have Y’all ever seen such a bizarre incident ever before? As in when Juan Pablo ‘MAC Montoya instantly spun out “N careened into a Jet-dryer truck - as it was FLAME ON; YIKES!

As the funniest part ‘bout all of this was that I’d just hung up the phone after the voice on the other end of the line had inquired: Is Juan Pablo still racing in ‘RASSCAR? As we were discussing how nobody’s names get mentioned anymore unless you’re either a Champion, i.e.; “SMOKE,” ‘JJ or Gordon; NO! NOT Robby “Dirtmann” Gordoun - thee other Gordon, uze know Pretty Boy Jeff. As I mentioned the only NON winners mentioned in the same brevity are Tuh Duh! The NEW Face of ‘RASSCAR; Danica-Danica-Danica, or Ironhead Junior; Err, ‘lil E, aka Dale Earnhart Jr.

Thus the irony was immense - sortta about as large as the ensuing Fireball that upon hanging up the telephone and returning to my dinner’s soothing soundtrack... I heard the TV Announcers go all Uh-flutter over that most amazing carnage, i.e.; ‘Monty’s Chebbie pinballing into an unexpecting Jet-dryer truck containing 200 gallons of Jet-grade kerosene; HOLY MARSHMELLOWS BATMAN!

Did somebody say Marshmallows; Err, Sprinkles? As the ensuing fireball and gushing of 200 gallons of jet fuel racing down the track’s 31-degree banked surface was indescribable... Actually having to agree with ‘Ol DW for once about it being the MOST bizarre thingy he’d ever witnessed!

And I did actually see the other oddity a zillion years ago, Y’all know when ‘Ol Super Mario, nee Mario Andretti decided to  RAM into a stationary safety truck parked alongside the wall with its lights  flashing at Detroit’s Belle Isle when I believe it was aiding none other then his son “Mikey?” As I’m told it was the 1991 event which Y’all can find upon Youtube if so desired.

Yet as we all know, the good news towards both of these incidents are that all parties involved - including a very shaken Jet-dryer truck driver, who was from Michigan International Speedway’s crew and a veteran of 24yrs were all ok...

2011 MotoGP Highlights

If I was to say that a "Stoner" was the best in the world at something, you would likely think I was talking snowboarding, poker, or some X-Game sport. However, this past season, fans of MotoGP heard the phrase "Stoner dominates" all too often as Casey Stoner took the Bwin poker sponsored 2011 MotoGP title in dominating fashion. I'm surprised they didn't rename the tour the StonerGP.

Just how dominating was Stoner this season you ask? If you have to ask, you clearly don't follow the Bwin backed MotoGP season, which sucks for you. Anyway, Stoner won 10 races this season. There are only 18 races total. He took the first race at Qatar and then let Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa take the Spanish and Protuguese races respectively. Stoner then took the next three races to jump out to a huge lead.

Stoner had another three match racing streak after winning the US Grand Prix, the Czech Republic GP, and the Indianapolis GP. Tack on Aragon, Iveco, and the Valencian GP to finish the season and you have a dominating performance that resulted in him having a 90 point lead over Lorenzo to finish the season. With his dominating performance this season, one has to wonder if he can follow it up in 2012.

Unfortunately, the dominating season of Stoner was overshadowed by the passing of Marco Simoncelli. Everyone that is associated with or a fan of MotoGP remembers that dreadful day in October at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Simoncelli lost the front end of his Honda on Turn 11. Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi were right behind him and unfortunately could not avoid a collision with Simoncelli.

The impact knocked Simoncelli's helmet off and he sustained serious trauma to the head, neck, and chest. Within an hour of the injuries, Simoncelli passed away at 16:56 local time. The 12 time 250cc winner will always be remembered for his flamboyant style. Sadly, his passing reminds us that what we take for granted can end in an instant.
The final race of the season began with an emotional tribute to Simoncelli as every rider took a memorial lap to remember him. Many thought the final race would be canceled, but many felt that it would be a better tribute for riders to honor his memory and do what Simoncelli enjoyed most, racing.
The 2011 season will be remembers as much for the dominance of Casey Stoner as for the tragedy in Simoncelli's death. Fortunately, a new season is on the horizon and fans and fans can look forward to happier times. The next season starts on April 8th and and online poker room Bwin will be back to sponsor. Will Stoner continue to dominate or will someone step up to challenge him? We will find out soon enough...

Three Speed-Boosting Upgrades to Consider

Hood Replacements

If you’d prefer to replace an existing part rather than install something new that wasn’t initially included with your vehicle, considering replacing your vehicle’s stock hood.  Manufacturer-installed hoods tend to be considerably heavier than they need to be, and the extra weight puts a greater strain on your vehicle’s engine.  By replacing the stock hood with a lightweight hood alternative, such as a fiberglass hood or carbon fiber hood, you can cut down on the overall weight of your vehicle, thereby reducing engine strain and providing for greater engine power.  Go with a fiberglass hood for the most lightweight option, but choose carbon fiber instead if you want one that’s lightweight but also more durable than fiberglass.

Turbocharger

If you have plenty of extra money to spare and aren’t concerned one bit about your finances, you should look into the logistics of installing a turbocharger in your vehicle.  Turbochargers can provide up to hundreds of additional horsepower, and like performance chips, they are also quite efficient by design as well.  Turbo kits can be expensive, prohibitively so for some, but utilizing one will certainly give your vehicle the most dramatic improvement in terms of overall horsepower gains...

Happy Freakin’ New Year!

Talk ‘bout ringin’ in the New Year in style… All I can say is: Yo Travis! You’re ‘Juan SIC Puppie!

So in case you haven’t heard yet? Last night Stuntman extraordinaire Travis Pastrana became the latest Daredevil to ring in the New Year in another mind-bending stunt put on by Deeter Majestic’s ‘lil ‘Ol Drinks Company better known as Red Bull… As the plan was for Travis to smash the existing Rally Car jump record of 171 feet set in 2006 by Rally America Teammate Ken Block, as apparently somebody had just beat Pastrana to his original goal of being first to jump 300 feet with a jump of 304’.

But Travis’s jump would be even more impressive as he planned to jump his Subaru Rally Car off of the Pine Street Pier over 250 feet onto an anchored barge in Rainbow Harbour in Long Beach, CA at midnight, eastern (Right-coast) time to ring in the 2010 New years in style!

In case you’ve never heard of the 26yr old Maryland native Travis Pastrana, he first burst into the limelight 10yrs ago at the newly minted X-Games, where he was stripped of his Gold medal and prize money for celebrating his accomplishment by jumping his motorcycle into the San Francisco Bay at the tender age of 15!

Yet Pastrana is no stranger to injury, having suffered 50+ broken bones in his career along with 20 concussions, not to mention separating his spine and being in a coma for three days; as you name it, he’s probably broken it! Along with two back operations he’s had his left knee surgically repaired nine times and his right knee six; as apparently Travis is after Lee Majors fictional 6 Million Dollar Man role, eh?

But back to the stunt at hand, which was part of the never ending cadre of wicked stunts as part of the now yearly Red bull No Limits New Years Eve show, as Travis decided to do something unique after last year’s mondo “Scooter” jump by Robbie Maddison. (Which I still think is the ‘SIC-EST!)

Pastrana & Co. took a Subaru WRX Sti and modified it to Rally Car specs, with an uprated turbo giving the Flat-4 cylinder “Lump” 400bhp in order to give Travis the needed “OOMPH!” to launch the 3,000lb “Sube-ah-Roo” off the 15 degree angled ramp at a speed of 92mph from a standing start of 1,000 feet from Shoreline Drive…

Funny enough! I haven’t watched any Stunt person Hi-Jinx on le Telescreen since sitting thru an overly “Slick” 2hr show one decade ago when Robbie Knievel successfully jumped the Grand Canyon 228 feet way back on May 20, 1999, albeit losing control of the bike on landing and suffering a broken leg in the harrowing feat…

So, ESPN’s 1hr show was a bit more palatable, albeit I got really SICK of the “Stick ‘N Ball” references… As I kept feeling like they were trying to DUMB IT DOWN for all of ‘dem Sports Fans who DON’T watch any Motor Racing activities… Although it was good to see Jamie little once again; even if she was part of the let’s HYPE the SHEISA outta this routine.

But first a little more on Travis, who I’d ahveda say is “Certified!” As in simply insanely CRAZY! As Travis was the first person to successfully complete a double back flip on a motorcycle at the 2006 X-Games, has jumped a motorcycle into the Grand Canyon – before parachuting to a safe landing… And the piece de la Resistance. Drumrool please… Tuh-duh! Jumped outta a perfectly safe Aeroplane WITHOUT a Parachute in order to be plucked from the sky by a fellow Jumper, as part of his zany TV show Nitro Circus…

And finally the hour of the jump had come, as just prior to Midnight ET the Subaru was fired up, and it sounded NASTY! With a sweet ARSE bark, as Travis teased the approx. 20,000 spectators with a few warm-up runs before it was finally GO-TIME! As I really liked the added reminder in the cockpit: Turn Air ON! As Travis’s Rally Car was fitted with an oxygen tank in case he hit the water at 6-G’s and needed to be pulled out by Frogmen, he’d have a ten minute supply of breatheable air, while further safety considerations included the deletion of his Rally America Navigator, with 120lbs of lead ballast inserted into the right-hand seat instead.

And then he was off! And TANK GAWD the Announcers SHUT-UP and let us just listen to that NASTY sounding Subaru accelerate down the pier and fly into the sky some 220+ feet before landing on a “Slick as Snot” ice rink of a landing ramp on the awaiting 240 foot Barge, as the night’s air dew had moistened the 40 foot wide landing ramp in the awaiting darkness… Before Travis pitched the WRX Sti sideways for an impact with the catch fence safety wall designed to arrest the hurtling Rally Car! As Pastrana triumphantly extricated himself from the vehicle, walked to the end of the ramp and did a back flip into the harbor… After having just unofficially jumped 274 feet which was shortly recognized as an official new record distance of 269 feet, besting the previous record by 98 feet!

So I guess it really does give you wings, eh?

So while the Mainstream media continues to Ballyhoo the SHEISA outta Jimmy Johnson’s 4-Peat in RASSCARLAND… And the Speed Freaks Stat Mann Caruthers picked Tanner “DRIFT-THIS” Foust as his Freak ‘O duh Year! I’m giving the nod to ‘TA (Travis Pastrana), also known as the “Wonder Kid” who NOT only has won four consecutive Rally America Titles, but jumped a ‘Freakin Sube-ah-Roo 269 feet OVER water in the pitch dark… So take ‘dat Jimmy!

It seems fitting that while we’re celebrating Saint Patty’s Day... The Seattle Post Intelligencer is sadly celebrating its last... As the death of a beloved Seattle institution and icon has just printed its very last real honest to good newspaper edition... As our town of two journalistic fish wraps has finally been whittled down to one, which precariously hangs in the balance of a most literary city. As I find it tragic to see the Hearst Corporation simply throw away 146 years of tradition...

Meanwhile, thankfully the fans are telling Emperor Bernardo he’s full of BLEEP! As according to Motorsport.com;
“A poll at manipeF1.com shows 77 percent of voters oppose Bernie Ecclestone's gold-silver-bronze medals plan for determining a world driving champion.”

So, perhaps somebody will tell Bernardo to go STUFF IT! (Besides his wife, eh?) Or better yet stick a fork in the Penguin and tell him he’s toast!

Eye Rock 500

Not to be cornfused with the IROC, of which I’m extremely happy doesn’t exist anymore as it had simply become another playground for showcasing the overcrowded cadre of Stock Car drivers permeating the Norte Americana scene... As I prefer the true International ROC instead, but I digress, as always!

I first learned about the Eye Rock 500 sometime last year... And was very excited about it! As Clyde had even promised to help me participate... By surreptitiously donating the vehicle, a flamboyant purple Pontiac Grand Prix; You know? The ones made famous by the Pontiac marketing wide track jingle; “Wider is Better!”

As you see, (Pun intended!) today marks a very significant milestone for Mwah; your humble scribe... Of one I’m not exactly fond of, but nevertheless occurred a decade ago when it was best decided that I NO longer be allowed to operate a motor vehicle...

And as one of the band members of Death Cab for Cutie said during the Bumbershoot performance; NOT to get too heavy, but... My milestone PAILS MISERABBLY in contrast to so many others, as the likes of Alex Zanardi, Davey Hamilton and Wayne Rainey come to mind for starters... As I’m quite certain that those are just the tip of the iceberg, eh?

Yet, while I assume we all marveled at the triumphs of Olympic superstars Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, I myself was much more intrigued by the story of this year’s Paralympics, which were also held in China.

As winning bidder NBC relentlessly pummeled us around the clock with this year’s Olympics, I’m totally unaware of any such Television coverage of the corresponding Paralympics, I mean HELL! Couldn’t they have been hosted on some Basic Cable channel?

And perhaps you’ve heard about South African double amputee Oscar Pistorius, along with all of the swirling controversy of whether or not he could compete in Beijing this summer? Of which he ultimately won his legal battle to compete, but unfortunately was unable to qualify due to his time being too slow...
