Ford Joins the Formula 1 Party, along with Five Other registered PU Suppliers in 2026

As FoMoCo’ jumps on the Formula 1 Bandwogon, and Hopes to Cash in…

By now it’s old news over the Ford Motor Company announcing their return to Formula 1 in the Big Apple ten days ago. When Red Bull became the very first ever Formula 1 Constructor to hold an F1 Car launch in the United States. Making it’s ‘lil Seester Scuderia AlphaTauri’s NYC launch two days ago seem somewhat Quaint.

As what seems overlooked was that on the same day of Ford’s announcement, the FIA also announced that six Power Unit (PU) Manufacturers had registered to supply Power Units for the 2026-2030 PU Formulae.

The most interesting of these six, which include two new enities, is the return of Honda. While the three current PU suppliers, i.e.; Alpine, (Renault) Ferrari and Mercedes Benz are joined by Audi and Red Bull Ford.

What’s Funny about this to Mwah is All of  the Grumbling being made by the current 10 F1 Teams over Michael Andretti’s ambitions of becoming the Sport’s 11th Formula 1 Constructor with GM’s Cadillac for 2026. Since they’re “worried” it will be a Badge Engineering exercise, which is exactly what Ford just agreed to due with Red Bull and AlphaTauri. But I guess the only difference is that those are existing F1 Teams, and I noticed that they were careful to call it Red Bull Ford instead…

But like I said. The most interesting Playah’ in this announcement was Honda’s desire to now return to Formula 1 after having pulled the plug at the end of the 2021 F1 season.

Thus I can only speculate is this who Andretti and Cadillac would partner with to build their PU’s? Since General Motors and Honda have a habbit of sharing joint technical alliances. Presuming that the ten little European F1 Teams are gracious enough to allow Michael Andretti to join their exclusive party.

Otherwise I’m left wondering who Honda would produce Power Units for? Although Williams Honda would have a nice synergy to it, provided it’s newly anointed Team Principal James Vowles can right it’s floundering ship?

Or will Honda power a yet as of unknown of potential, new 12th F1 Constructor? And what about the stillborn Porsche PU effort? And does this mean that the current 10 F1 Teams won’t let Cadillac come and play?

But like Grizzled F1 Journo’ Hoe Saward just said regarding the annual F1 Car launch season. It’s the Warm ‘N Fluffy part of the season. When everybody has visions of Grandeur, even though some are Delusional!

Is IndyCar Fading to Black?

Or just “A Whiter Shade of Gray” like it’s current TV Audience?

Yeah, probably shouldn’t be so influenced by one single reporter. But I rely Heavily upon Racer.com and Marshall Pruett for most of my IndyCar News on a Daily basis. Specifically since it’s the website that’s easiest to interface with “Zoey, the Princess Warrior!” My current Zoomtext Fusion 2023 Screen Reader. Since Motorsport.com is a Royal Pain in thoust Keister to Navigate! And the Indianapolis Star’s Motorsports coverage is primarily an Afterthought. Yuhs know only during the (6 months) racing season and mired in the other 40-plus Stick ‘N Ball Sports stories, but I digress…

As I also really enjoy now finally being able to simply “Click” upon the Play Button and listen to Marshall Pruett’s weekly Podcasts, for which His MP1349 episode was “Priceless” for several reasons! Most notably the gifts that el Capitano’ and Ye Cheepster’ simultaneously gave Him for His Birthday!

https://marshallpruett.podbean.com/e/mp-1349-the-week-in-indycar-listener-qa-dec-10-2022/

Yet I do feel like I get a pretty good cross section of what IndyCar and Sports Cars Fans are feeling by reading the Racer Mailbag weekly, along with Marshall’s The Week in Indy Cars and Sports Car Podcasts…

And Yes, I know we’re All supposed to be Punch Drunk Happy right now that Indy Cars just tested for two days in the California Desert. But How many people saw it?

Yet I Still cannot put my fingers on why I’ve got such a Bad feeling in my gut over the listless direction the “SS IndyCar” Cruise Ship seems currently headed in. Which I’ll try expounding on below. But it basically seems to fester over the perceived lack of Overall leadership and what Indy Cars future is?

Being a lowly Basement Dwelling blogger. Hey Mom, turn on the lights! And the Heat please, Hya! I can only react to what I’m able to read or listen to via the Interwoods’, aka Internet and Print media, which naturally keeps Shrinking, Sigh! And thus, I do Not have any answers to solve Indy Cars problems…

For Mwah, the first shoe to drop most recently (last Fall) was the inept marketing Blunder of rebranding Indy Lights to Indy NXT! Which still creeps me out knowing that “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” WWE NXT came first!

But even worse was Penske Entertainment’s Slashing of the 2022 Indy Lights Champion’s Advancement Prize Fund by a staggering 60%, for which apparently will Freeze it’s “Next Gen” Lights Champion Linus Lundqvist out of a ride in the IndyCar series!

And then there’s the ongoing Disconnect between Penske Entertainment’s Bud Denker regarding the ridiculous price increase for this year’s Iowa Two Days ConcertFest, Err IndyCar Double Header race…

And then there was the announcement of IndyCar’s VP of Marketing SJ Luedtke leaving the Organization. Although I have to wonder if this has anything to do with the overall lack of Marketing the series received in General, since we naturally do Not ever Hear a Gory thing here in the Pacific Northwest! The overwhelmingly Negative reaction to the NXT Blunder, or All of the Above?

Look, being four Hours South of Portland International Raceway in rural Oregon, I’m Not expecting a whole lot of IndyCar News. But it appears IndyCar doesn’t even try promoting their Drivers even during the races!

And I Hate remembering that IMSA used to run Brilliant Driver Promo “teases” during commercial breaks a Zillion years ago. Which I’m pretty sure was during the Grand Am Days, Yikes!

In true IndyCar fashion, Penske Entertainment’s Number One Puffed Shirt CEO Mark Miles typically trotted out His Quit looking over Thar, we’re Hunky doory Press Speak Blather! Telling Racer’s Marshall Pruett that IndyCar is “significantly” upping it’s Marketing Budget this year, but wouldn’t give any figures. Along with laying out His Hopes for who’ll they’ll Hire to fill the VP of Marketing position. Seriously Dude? You’re the Employer! But Miles makes it sound like they’re Hopeful the can actually Attract the right candidate…

As this is classic Miles Speak. Since I know I’ve Belabored How many years in-a-row here on No Fenders? Miles Pontificating how Indy Cars TV Ratings that were perpetually in the Gutter, were Ahem, going Up! Which Thar were only two solutions, i.e.; completely Tank or Uh Duh, increase…

Whilst I’ll try giving the vaunted 100 Days to Indy Docuseries a “Pass” until it appears this Spring. Although for Mwah, it wasn’t a Good First look when finding out my Spectrum Cable TV service Doesn’t appear to even offer The CW Channel! Although I did find Vice Pacific, which Hopefully is the Vice TV channel IndyCar claims will Air Rebroadcasts…

And I understand it’s Not for Mwah, since I’m definitely in the largest IndyCar TV Viewer Demographic! But what sticks in my Craw most, is that this total lack of Young TV Viewers is at least partially related to The Split! Since IndyCar racing was Divided for twelve Gory years, which totally Decimated it’s attractiveness to New Fans. Not to mention IndyCar sticking to it’s same ‘Ol Business model for the last 20+ years, or is that 30?

I mean what happened the last time IndyCar tried installing a CEO with “forward” looking vision? Can Y’all say Randy “the Candyman” Bernard? As I have to wonder, which is thriving more right now, the PBR or IndyCar? And Nah, that Ain’t Pabst Blue ribbon Yuck-Yuck-Yuck!

And whilst I totally 100% agree on Marshall’s current assessment that the Owners and Top Executives of IndyCar Have a Zero tolerant policy for saying Anything Bad, Negative or Adverse to the state of Indy Cars.

I’d have to say I’ve felt this has been the standard Boiler plate Culture since I Dunno? The Tony George Dazes? And most definitely since Miles was installed as Randy Bernard’s replacement as CEO of Hulman & Company Wayback’ in December, 2012!

All of which is Arse-sumedly why I try steering well clear of the series House Organ’s Official website for any real News!

Yeah, I know that El Capitano’, nee Roger Penske’s a brilliant Businessman, ergo why He’s a Billionaire and Oh Never Mind! But I have to say that currently IndyCar feels like it’s being run by a Hedge Fund organization who’s awaiting turning it over for a profit! Even though I’m fairly certain that won’t happen upon Roger’s watch. But the ever present Slashing of anything Monetary that affects the bottom line vs. reinvesting into the Sport just has a bad feel to it! Not to mention the lack of Any true future Business plan.

And that’s before even getting to the Monstros Mistake of having let the iRacing league license lapse! Err giving it away to a Gaming Console Company’s Exclusive Rights to a Business that has a less than exemplary track record!

Since I’m Not a Gamer, initially I Didn’t understand the scope of this Massive Shooting Themselves in Thar Feet Blunder by the IndyCar Hierarchy! But talk about turning off a vital path to the so Fawned over Younger Demographic, who are rightly Royally Pissed Off at IndyCar! As how many of this Global Youth segment will IndyCar have now permanently Squandered?

F1: 2023 Car launches Begin

Ooh, ah, look at All of the Shiny, Purdy colours! And Nah, that’s not to be Cornfuzed with Brock Purdy, Ouch!

For those keeping track, here’s the list of the Formula 1 Car launch dates known. Since when I began this Alfa Romeo and Haas had not announced their dates yet, but have since done so.

Haas: January 31

Red Bull: February 3

Williams: February 6

Alfa Romeo: February 7

AlphaTauri: February 11

Aston Martin: February 13

McLaren: February 13

Ferrari: February 14

Mercedes: February 15

Alpine: February 16

Guess it makes sense that Red Bull, the reigning Formula 1 Drivers and Constructors Champions were initially launching first. Going very Upscale by hosting a physical car launch in New York. Being the first time ever in formula One’s History to Host an F1 Car launch in the States.

At least I Arse-sumed it was an actual F1 Chassis being shown. Although it will obviously not be the team’s definitive RB19 2023 F1 Challenger. Since these are “State” secrets for All ten of our current Formula 1 Constructors, who are loathe to let anybody new join their party! Boo Hoo, we Don’t wanna let anybody else have a piece of our Cake Mikey!

Yet I almost feel sorry for Williams and Alfa Romeo following Red Bull now. Since they will definitely still be overshadowed by the announcement of Ford returning to Formula 1 in partnership with Red Bull Power Train, “co-producing” it and AlphaTauri’s 2026 Power Units. (PU)

And it seems like this is All that was talked about at Red Bull’s launch, which I thought I read somewhere it was just a livery reveal of the Red Bull’s latest F1 Challenger?

As Williams and Mercedes are said to be holding Digital release events. Whilst I’m guessing Ferrari’s doing something at either Maranello or Fiarono? With Aston Martin holding it’s Rollout at it’s Silverstone factory.

Alpine will reveal it’s new racecar in London. While AlphaTauri will use the same New York City premises as Thar Big Brother Red Bull used just over a week previously.

Initially leaving us wondering when Alfa Romeo and Haas would launch their new cars? And whether or not these will just be digital teases prior to Formula One’s single three day test session at Bahrain, from February 23-25.

And in what feels like it’s becoming an yearly tradition. Haas once again “Jumped the Shark” to the Head of the Queue with it’s 2023 livery release on January 31st, with it’s VF-23 to actually break cover closer to Bahrain’s February test. Revealing during it’s livery launch on a virtual, basic shape concept of last year’s car. That the team would due a Shakedown test of the VF-23 on Feb 11th at silverstone.

Meanwhile Alfa Romeo quietly announced their launch will be held a day after Team Wlly’s on February 7th. In what I’m pretty certain is the final year of Alfa Romeo branding.

As the F1 season commences on March 5th, also at the Bahrain International Circuit. Followed by Saudi Arabia and Australia to start the year. With now just a Mega’, record 23 races on the calendar. As this April’s cancelled Chinese Grand Prix will not be replaced, leaving a four week gap in the schedule between Australia and Azerbaijan.

As we’re just shy of a month away before another lengthy Formula 1 season commences, and just over a Fortnight’s time, ergo 17 days until Cars actually Hit the track in earnest for the first time this year…

Open Wheel Racing’s Money Grab equals More Negative Camber

As what did ‘Ol Gordon Gecko say about Money Never Sleeps?

The title of IndyCar website’s Bright, Shiny, Bunnies and Rainbows article was Season Anticipation Kicks into Top Gear this week at Thermal. For which after I’d “read” the article, my Blood was Boiling!

As I was uncharacteristically seething wit Anger after having read this Puff piece on Indycar.com. Y’all know, Indy Cars official House Organ!

As I’d read this following IndyStar’s Nathan Browne’s article on the Thermal Club and it’s Gated community, for which at least it’s owner was Honest by admitting that the ultimate goal of Hosting Indy Cars “Open” Cough Cough, Butterfingers! Test at the Thermal Club was All about hopefully selling more Housing lots via $175,000 initiation Memberships. Where the average Home was said to cost $2.6 million in 2019. But now All of the Headlines are titled what your $5.2 million Membership (Fee) Gets you…

As the owner of the Thermal Club seemingly boasts over having sunk more than $275 million into this project and has $500 million in property left to sell!

As seriously IndyCar? You couldn’t find a public venue that was Open to the General Public anywhere in North America to Host your vaunted Spring Training? And then even worse. IndyCar was too Cheap to bother sending a small contingent of it’s IndyCar Radio Crew to cover the two days of “Action!” Not to mention IndyCar, Err Penske Entertainment being unwilling to fork out a few Hundred thousand Dollars to Have NBC cover it on Peacock. What a Fucking Joke!

Hmm, may be they’re saving the Cash in order to write Linus Lundqvsit a Checque for winning last year’s Indy Lights Championship?

As I understand your feeble attempts at pandering to a younger Audience by only using Social Media Channels, but this shouldn’t be at the cost of Alienating your Core Audience! Since Not everybody does the social Media thing, especially if you’re blind! Ooh, look at them purdy Instagram pictures…

And this Cockamamy excuse about Not being able to find any Warm weather venue for Spring Training just seems ridiculous. As why not have Held it at Willow Springs International Raceway? Or how about Sonoma, Homestead or Sebring? Although there’s gotta be more than just two race tracks available in Florida, Righto? Whilst I’m guessing that Laguna Seca’s busy getting it’s new Asfault right now? And it’s definitely a bit Chilly at Portland International Raceway currently, but I digress…

Also, I do Not want to Hear or read any more Bullshit about How Amazingly Sustainable IndyCar is! Since let’s consider how everybody involved got to the track from Indianapolis. Hmm, guessing they All flew on Commercial Airplanes? Not to mention who flew their private Jets into Thermal, Roger Penske? And Arse-suming that All of the Catering vehicles and other various supplies weren’t delivered by vehicles running on Bio Fuel or Synthetic, “Clean, Green” Gasoline!

And Don’t even get me started on what All of the Crews, Support personnel and Drivers used for transportation  to and from the track…

And then there’s the whole issue of building a luxury, Gated Compound over 300 Acres enclosed by 18-foot High Brick Walls in the middle of the Desert! Where you’re required to build a 30,000 square foot House within five years of being granted membership.

Making me wonder where’s the community’s water for each member’s Mansion coming from? As I think California’s still in a Super Drought.

As can Y’all say the Salton Sea? With the Coachella Valley taking it’s water from the ever Shrinking Colorado River…

All of which just Reeks of How Out of Touch the Senior leadership at IndyCar is! I mean the only thing missing at the Thermal Club were the live Entertainment Acts like Donny Osmond. Since His Ah ‘lil bit country, and A little bit Rock ‘N Roll would have been perfect. Oh Never Mind!

Meanwhile Formula 1 Doesn’t get a Free pass either. Since “America’s” Haas F1 Team’s new title sponsor MoneyGram says it All! As I prefer the moniker Money Grab. And I sure Hope it works out better than their previous two title sponsors Rich’s Energy and Uralkali…

As it was Grizzled F1 Journo’ Joe Saward who said it best about the ten little F1 Teams saying No No No to Mikey A’s intentions of joining the Club when He used the word Poppycock!

Now has Michael Andretti ingratiated Himself with the ten Formula 1 Team bosses and Liberty media, probably Not. But then again, I’m fairly certain Nobody Forced the current ten F1 Teams to sign the present Concorde Agreement that says a maximum of 12 F1 Teams can take to the grid with 24 Cars, and not the current 20!

As I was glad to Hear Joe using the word I’d been saying to myself, that being Colusion. While Messer Saward also rightly threw in the word Cartel!

As I’ve been a Fan of Formula 1 long enough to remember when the staggering sum of $48 million was the asking price to buy a new team “Membership” into F1. And there wasn’t any extra $200m Fee to pay the current Formula 1 Teams for projected loss of income.

Or how about when four of the smaller teams like Williams, Minardi and others went to the EU with a Lawsuit about F1 being a Cartel and How they weren’t getting a proper slice of the Cake financially. For which I believe they filed with the Anti Corruption Branch of the European Commission? But that was so long ago, I can no longer remember the exact details, other than they got more money to seemingly make the Lawsuit disappear…

As Sorry Toto Wolff, Chris Horner and the majority of the other F1 Team Bosses crying Crocodile Tears! You indeed Are Greedy just like Michael accused you of being! Although I’d say what Michael left out is that He desperately wants to join this “Rich ‘N Famous” Club and become one of the Elite Himself!

Since after all, Michael Andretti is a Businessman just like the others, but at least He’s willing to proclaim that He wants to become a Global Playah’ like the rest of those Cut Throats and Has found the necessary money and everything else the F1 Boys Club currently requires a potential, interested New F1 Team Constructor to do!

And that’s without even going into How Liberty Media has made it virtually impossible for the “Common Folk” to attend either the Miami or Las Vegas Grand Prix! With Austin close behind, for which may be I’m Cornfuzed? But if the whole idea is to attract a New, vibrant, younger Demographic. Then Don’t you need to make it Affordable for those with less income to be able to attend your motor races?

Or is this just one more example of the Uncle Bernaughty’ method of simply making money? When I believe Mr. Bernard Charles eccelstone used to Crow over How He Didn’t give a Tinkers Damn over how many people attended Grands Prix, since He made His money off of the TV Broadcasts!

So perhaps Y’all can “See” why right now at the moment I’m having a really Difficult time getting excited. Or kicking into Top Gear with Anticipation over the fast approaching Open Wheel Racing season…

RETRO: Eight Racers who Broke NASCAR’s Color Barrier

Which is four times more than the Pathetic amount who’ve raced in the Indianapolis 500!

Although Wendell Scott’s no longer the winningest African American driver in NASCAR’s top tier Monster Energy Cup series. With that Honour going to Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr, whose won twice as many NASCAR Cup races. Nor is Wendell the first African American to Start a NASCAR race. Although He may have been the first to receive the necessary license to compete? Reportedly in 1953.

Nonetheless, Scott is definitely the most prolific, with a massive 495 Starts made over twelve years, between 1961-73. Scoring 147 Top 10 Finishes, nearly one third of All entries!

As Scott, who never had top flight equipment or any major sponsors, had a best finish of sixth Overall in 1966. During a streak of four consecutive years of finishing in the Top 10 Overall! Before a Horrific accident at Talladega ended His racing career.

Yet how well do you know the other seven African American’s to have contested a top tier NASCAR race? Be that Grand National, Winston Cup, Nextel Cup Sprint Cup or today’s Monster Energy cup racing series.

On July 31, 1955, Elias Bowie entered the NASCAR Bay Meadows Racetrack’s Grand National race in San Mateo, California. Where this Thoroughbred Horse Racing facility hosted NASCAR between 1954-56.

As Bowie became the first ever African American to contest a Grand National event and claimed a prize of $90.00 for finishing 28th in His 1953 Cadillac. As this would be Bowie’s one and only Grand National start.

“Watching,” Err listening to Greased Lightning. Before the movie began, the TCM Studio Pundit Ben Mankiewickz briefly mentioned the name Charlie Scott, having competed in a Grand National race before Wendell Scott.

As Charlie, not Wendall, who’ve got zero relationship. Made His lone Grand National start in the 1956 Daytona Beach race. Qualifying His Chrysler 300 14th out of a massive 76 Car field! And finished a very respectable 19th.

Another of the unknown African American Stock Car Drivers to Mwah was George Wiltshire. Not to be Cornfuzed with the Actor named George Wiltshire who Died in 1976. As the Wiltshire racing driver apparently made a Baker’s Dozen starts. Mostly in the USAC Stock Car series between 1971 and 1982, driving for His own team.

Yet Wiltshire became the fourth African American to race in NASCAR’s top tier Winston Cup series upon starting in the 1971 Islit 250, in Islit, New Yor, on July 15th.

As the Islit Speedway just so happens to hold the Honour of being NASCAR’s Shortest ever racetrack competed on, at a miniscule distance of 0200 mile! With the ’71 event being it’s last event du to NASCAR cancelling All races shorter than 250 miles. (400K)

Interestingly, there’s two Black Racecar Drivers listed as having competed in this race, which “The King,” Richard Petty thoroughly dominated. Leading Flag-to-Flag from Pole position, albeit only 230 laps were completed during to a scoring error.

The No. 34 of Wendell Scott started 17th in His 1969 ford. While George Wiltshire in His No. 89 1970 Plymouth lined-up P29. Scott is credited with finishing a respectable 11th, whilst Wiltshire failed to finish the race, and was classified P28.

Wiltshire’s second and final Winston Cup start came four years later at the 1975 Purolator 500 at Pocono Raceway, where His dodge Charger Done Blown Up after only 15 laps!

The fourth and final driver’s name of these eight Bold Men I’d never heard of before was the seemingly obscure Randy Bethea who Hails from Johnson city, Tennessee. As Bethea made a solitary Winston Cup start at the World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May, 1975. Yet like his contemporary Wiltshire above. Bethea’s motor went Kuh-Blamoe! As Bethea retired on lap 251 of 400 and was classified 33rd.

Arguably the third best known or most notable on this list has to be Willy T. Ribbs. Who for Mwah, I was more aware of His Open Wheel Racing and Sports Cars accomplishments. As Ribbs was the first African American to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in 1991. For which as of 2023 still has only two African Americans to have ever done so…

Ribbs antics of dancing atop the roof of His racecar after winning is legendous’, as I believe He was doing His Mohammed Ali shuffle tribute? With Ribbs driving for both thee “Cat in the Hat” Jack Roush and Dan Gurney in SCCA Trans Am and IMSA GTO competition. With Ribbs winning a total of 17 Trans Am and 10 IMSA GTO races during His career.

Willy T is also the first African American to ever test a formula 1 car, doing so for the eponymous Uncle Bernaughty’, aka Bernie Ecclestone. When Ecclestone was then the F1 Team Owner of Brabham at Estoril in 1986.

Humpy Wheeler Hired Ribbs to race in the 1978 World 600, but Ribbs elected to forgo the event after allegedly receiving Death Threats, and His ride was given to somebody named Dale Earnhardt instead…

Willy T then made the first of His three NASCAR Winston Cup starts at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 1986, where He scored His best Cup result of P22. As Ribbs would contest a total of three races that year for DiGard Motorsports.

As I’d say that the recent Documentary titled Uppity describes Ribbs personality perfectly! Since I always forget that this Brash, Outspoken retired racer once was suspended for a month by IMSA following a 1987 race at Portland International Raceway for punching Scott Pruett!

Two Decades later, Bill Lester made His only two starts in the Nextel Cup Series at Atlanta and Michigan Speedways, with a best finish of 32nd.

Lester who earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1984, predominantly spent His Roundy round career in the Craftsman Trucks series, where He made a total of 143 starts. Making His Trucks Debut at Portland International Raceway in 2000.

Lester also raced for several years in Sports Cars. Mostly in Grand Am competition, where He became the first African American Driver to win a Sports Car race in May of 2011 at Virginia International Raceway. Winning the GT Class aboard an Autohaus Racing Camaro with Co-Driver Jordan Taylor.

Then I’d say it came full circle, when Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. almost did the unthinkable in only His fifth career NASCAR Cup start at Daytona! Which is when I first became aware of Wallace, our eighth African American Cup driver, who audaciously finished a close Runner-up to Austin Dillon in the 2018 Day-Toner’ 500 driving for Richard Petty Motorsports! (RPM) Aboard it’s iconic No. 43.

I say Full circle since it was that very same Richard Petty, a la “The King” who Wendell Scott had passed for His lone Cup victory 55 years earlier! Although the scoring Error wasn’t rectified until two hours later after everybody had left the racetrack…

As Wallace drove for RPM thru the 2020 season before getting to compete in First-rate equipment at the newly formed 23XI Racing Team co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin.

As even better yet, Wallace’s maiden Cup victory came in the Deep South at Talladega in 2021. And then He claimed His second Monster Energy Cup victory last year at Kansas in the team’s second entry, the No. 45 entry which began the year with Kurth Busch as it’s driver. As Wallace and substitute driver ty Gibbs swaped racecars since the #45 was still eligible for the Owners Championship…

The Tomaso Files: Greased Lightning - A Pivotal Movie

As you cannot deny Wendell Scott’s Tenacity!

Welcome to Black History Month. Y’all know, the Shortest Month of the Year, coInky-dense? Not to mention how little progress has been made since last year.

http://www.nofenders.net/2022/02/indy-cars-lack-of-diversity.html

So I’m not sure what’s worse? That I’m just posting this now, or the fact that I’d never “seen” the movie before?

Sunday night, December 4, 2022 on Turner Classic Movies. (TCM) I sat down to “Watch,” Err listen some 45-plus years after being released on Ye Big Screen. (July 1, 1977) To the movie Greased Lightning.

Ironically, and without knowing it. Just Days prior to my “watching” this movie in it’s entirety. Leading Lady Pam Grier just so happened to be on an episode of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, which I managed to catch unexpectedly…

Following the movie’s airing a few days later, we celebrated you know what by lowering our (Oregon) State Flags to Half Mast on December 7th. Which made me wonder why Don’t we Honor African Americans in a similar way? As they certainly also Fought for Our Country. And I’d say repeatedly!

As it’s Funny to Mwah, that when I think of Richard Pryor, I immediately think of that long ago great movie Silver Streak, which I was surprised to just learn actually Debuted some seven months earlier on December 8, 1976. Or His later Stand Up Comedy Specials. Not to mention learning that Prior and Co-Star Gene Wilder would go on to Star in three more movies together.

For those of you unaware, Greased Lightning is a movie about Wendell Scott, the first Black Driver to win a NASCAR race. Starring Richard Prior, the aforementioned Pam Grier and Beau Bridges.

Since I can still loosely recall the Pundits mentioning the name of Charlie Scott preceding the movie’s beginning, having raced before Wendell Scott.

The 1977 Film is loosely based on Scott’s Autobiography and opens with a scene of Him winning a Bicycle race at Age 15. Then starts with Wendell returning Home from World War II to a Celebratory Welcome Home party that includes His future wife Mary Jones.

Although now having read more about Wendell, it’s definitely loosely based on His Biography. And I’d say it’s also been “Dressed Up” for Hollywood’s necessary Dramatic license! Since it’s not chronologically correct. But it’s a great movie nonetheless. Specifically in regards to portraying the Overt Racism Wendell endured His Whole life!

As the movie doesn’t explain what Wendell did during the War. But apparently He was a Mechanic in then the Segregated U.S. Army. As Scott tells His Mom He Doesn’t want to work at the Cotton Mill plant in Hometown Danville, Virginia, and uses His Muster Pay to buy a Taxi and open an Auto repair Garage.

When Mary’s family asks Wendell what He wants to do in life, He replies He wants to become a Championship winning Racecar Driver to great laughter…

Yet unable to pay for the garage, Scott sees a friend running Moonshine and asks for a Job. As the movie goes, Wendell eludes the Cops for five years with the Police having Destroyed nine Patrol Cars in the process of Chasing Him.

Scott’s friend basically sets Him up and Wendell’s finally caught by the Police. In order to keep from going to Jail. The local Short Track Promoter comes up with the Scheme that if Wendell will drive in a race at His Track and finishes the race, 12 of the 15 Charges against Him will be Dropped.

As the White people want to see Him get Killed, and the White Drivers deliberately Crash into Wendell, who nevertheless finishes the race…

There’s a great scene when Wendell finishes fourth and is awarded two Steak dinners at a “Whites Only” Restaurant, where fellow White Racing Driver “Hutch,” played by Beau Bridges befriends Him and goes to Dinner with Him, before Hutch becomes His Mechanic.

And there’s the scene where Wendell wins a race, but isn’t declared the winner until two Hours later due to a Scoring Error. Which truly occurred when Scott became the first African American to win what then was the NASCAR Grand National Stock Car series at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida. A Half Mile Dirt Track on December 1, 1963, when He passed “the King,” aka Richard Petty whose racecar was faltering. For which Buck Baker was erroneously declared the initial winner and given the race trophy.

As History denotes, Baker allegedly “lost” the trophy and Wendell never received it before He Died in 1990 at Age 69 from Spinal Cancer. And it wasn’t until 2021 that NASCAR finally awarded Scott’s Family a replica trophy, some six years after Wendell was posthumously inducted into NASCAR’s Hall of Fame.

I’m Happy I got to “See,” Uhm Hear the movie in it’s original, uncensored format, for which today would be impossible. Only in the sense of Hearing How Racist people were just over a Half Century ago. For which it further Disturbed me when after the movie was over. The TCM “Narrator” Ben Mankiewicz told a disturbing story to the movie’s filming.

The racing footage was filmed on local Racetracks in Georgia. At the former Athens Speedway and Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron.

Where at one of these racetracks, the film’s Onlookers, presumably White were doing their best to Interrupt the movie’s filming by Yelling and Screaming every time the action began.

And this crowd was so Obnoxious that the Director had to revert to yelling Cut to begin a scene in order to confuse the disruptive crowd. And Action when He wanted the scene to end…

Not sure if the 1962 Chevrolet racecar that Wendell Scott built for the movie, and once was on display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame is still present? While I really enjoyed the movie’s Soundtrack, that was written and performed by Richie Havens.

While Rockabilly Artist and fellow Danvillian’ Mojo Nixon recorded the Ballad of Wendell Scott, which I’d never Heard the song before, or of Mojo Nixon…

ROLEX 24: IndyCar Drivers Guide

As just over One Third of this year’s IndyCar field will go Sports car racing this weekend…

Perusing the cavernous No Fenders Archive vault, I came across a story that made me ponder if Thar’s anybody on this year’s Rolex 24 Grid that makes fellow competitors as nervous as when ‘Ol superTex’, nee Anthony Joseph Foyt Jr. “terrorized” Day-Toners’ High Banks in an All conquering Porsche 962 Panzerwagen? Hey after all, some IndyCar Rookie’s honouring His Bosses turning 88 this year with His car number…

Update

Thanks to Raymond Hando’s For The Love of Indy’s comprehensive Car-by-Car preview of the entire 61 Car Grid for this year’s Rolex 24. I learned that there’s actually five Indy NXT Drivers participating this year.

With No Disrespect towards Danial Frost who’s part of the No. 43 MRS GT-Racing’s LMP3 line up, who I missed during my Mondo’ Rolex 24 previews. With Frost’s inclusion seeing more than Half of HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing’s Indy NXT Squad “Tuning Up” at Daytona.

Also, Colton Herta is indeed driving in both of BMW M Team RLL ‘s GTP Prototypes, albeit primarily in the #24 entry.

Which although rare, Driver’s have raced two cars before. As this year’s LMP2 Pole Sitter Ben Keating comes to mind. Although Keating raced for two different teams in two different classes from what I remember.

Also believe Thars a Maximum Drive-time that Herta, or Any competitor cannot exceed more than Four hours in any Six Hour period…
