INDYCAR: Laguna Seca Points Scoring 101

C’mon Will Power! It’s been eight years since I’ve rooted so Hard for you to Win the Championship!

By now, Y’all are Painfully aware of the IndyCar Points Standings entering this Sunday’s Season finale at Laguna Seca. With DJ WillyP’, aka Will Power leading, 20 Points Ahead of Josef Newgarden and Scott Dixon. As these three Drivers are the most likely candidates to be Hoisting the Astor Cup Sunday afternoon in Monterey. Although five Drivers are still mathematically eligible.

2022 Point Standings

1) Will Power: 523

2) Josef Newgarden: 503, -20

2) Scott Dixon: 503, -20

4) Marcus Ericsson: 484, -39

5) Scott McLaughlin: 482, -41

But if Power does what He’s been doing All Season long, i.e.; Finishing on the Podium. With a Finish of third or better, Power’s  this year’s NTT IndyCar Series Champion, No Matter What Anybody else Does.

Whilst Arse-suming Y’all know that a Maximum of 54-points are on Tap this weekend. With 50 for winning. And a maximum of four Bonus Points: One for Pole, One for Leading a lap, and two for Most Laps led.

Points are awarded in the following Order: 1st = 50, 2nd = 40, 3rd = 35, 4th = 32 and 5th = 30. Positions 6-10 pay 28-26-24-22-20 respectively. While Positions 11-24 Decrease by One point per position, beginning with 11th = 19 and 24th = 6. While 25th and lower All receive 5 points.

As Here’s Racer’s Marshall Pruett’s look See’ at the possible Points scenario for Sunday’s Laguna Seca race.

Whilst the Rookie Of the Year (ROY) Championship Battle has really tightened up! With Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard Holding a razor thin 5-points lead over Vanna I wanna Buy a vowel! Uhm, Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Motorsports David Malukas. As I’m rootin’ for Malukas, especially ever since He was Robbed of Rookie Honours at Mother Speedway this year!

2022 Rookies Point Standings

1. (15th) Christian Lundgaard: 293

2. (16th) David Malukas: 288, -5

(Overall Point Standings)

As How can you Not Root for this Guy, ‘lil spud’, aka David Malukas to be Rookie Of the Year? As this Hamburger ‘N spud’ interview following Portland Qualifying is Priceless!

INDYCAR: Portland Rewind

AS let’s All watch the Portland replay upon Ye Jumbotron Video Board Trackside Up Close ‘n Personal!

Every year I find if Uber Funny reading All the various Permutations of what Driver X Needs to Do to win the Championship provided Drivers Y, Z, and Uhm, B? Need to Do in order to clinch the title.

Since leading up to Portland, All Four Championship Contendahs’ needed to Just win Baby! But if Will Power Crashed in the Festival Curve taking out Josef Newgarden. And Scott Dixon was given a Drive-thru Penalty for Blowing thru the Festival Curve Chicane. With Marcus Ericsson running Outta Fuel on the Final lap! Then Johnny, we’ve got ourselves a Ball Game, Oh Never Mind!

As How will this weekend’s Season Finale at Laguna Seca Stack Up vs. Portland’s Preamble?

Friday’s first practice was the most Bizarre that I can remember! As the 75mins session took some three Hours to complete, mostly due to the One Hour, 21 minutes Red Flag period to fix a “Jumbotron” Big Screen on the Front Straightaway that was precariously tilting towards the track with Hydraulic fluid leaking out of the Hoist used to lift it!

As a Bemused Colton Herta said it looked like some sorta Forklift’s tongs from what they could see Backside and that the prongs looked Bent! While both Colton and David Malukas told West Coast  IndyCar Radio Pit Reporter Dan Rusanowsky, the “Voice of The San Jose Sharks.” They’d Never seen that before! As Malukas said He was coming down Pitlane when they told Him to get out of the car for the Video Board repair, Say What?

According to Racer’s Marshall Pruett one of the Telescoping lift’s Hydraulic Rams lost Fluid when it’s “cap” came off and started spewing fluid with the lift lowering and the Video Board coming to rest upon a trailer before workers finally secured it with mounting straps for the remainder of the session! Or was it the weekend?

Since Malukas noted you could still See the Crooked Jumbotron during their Saturday Portland video. And Marshall Cheekily called it the Leaning Tower of Panasonic during one of the Duo’s videos…

Although I recall during one of my latter Portland Chump Carz’ visits that I think it was Qualie’ that went eerily, starkly Quiet for at least a Half Hour, or longer? When the circuit experienced a full Power Outage on a blistering Hot, Sunny Day! And obviously they couldn’t tell us what was happening over the PA System, albeit I can no longer remember what year that was…

Speaking of Malukas, Mark Gravelly’ James was repeating to us with Davey Hamilton alongside how Malukas’s Spotter Pancho Carter Had been telling Him to try the High line at Gateway All race long. To which Davey said I can assure you that Pancho used more Colourful language than that!

As there were a total of four Red Flags in an Uber Disjointed first practice session, with Helio Castroneves, Takuma Sato and Pato O’Ward causing the final three Ontrack. While Mark James noted that the Top-3 were exactly how they’d finished at Gateway. With Josef Newgarden Quickest at 0:58.5769, followed by Malukas and Scott McLaughlin. While Alex Palou was ninth, will Power finished P10, Scott Dixon 11th and Marcus Ericsson in 16th. And O’ward’s 22 place finish wasn’t indicative of His pace, since Pato Had been P4 before causing the final Red Flag, as the AMR Safety team couldn’t refire His Chevy’ lump’.

Saturday morning’s second practice session was way “cleaner,” as the One Hour session with 45 minutes guaranteed running stayed Caution Free with DJ WillyP[ vaulting to P1’, with a time of 0:58.3946. Followed by Josef Newgarden Hot on His Heels with ScottyMac’ (McLaughlin) seeing Team Penske Go 1-2-3! Whilst Andretti Autosport’s Colton Herta silently lurked behind in fourth.

Scott Dixon was the Quickest of the Ganassi Boyz’ in P7, with Palou 13th and Ericsson P15, with A.J. Foyt’s Kyle Kirkwood the meat of this Ganassi Sandwich…

Impressively, the Only One Car team on the Grid saw Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Callum Ilott finish P9! As can He carry this over into Qualifying?

Pato O’Ward was 10th, one place ahead of David Malukas. Whilst Rookie Of the Year (ROY) Points leader Christian Lundgaard Quietly Zipped up to P5! One spot ahead of RLLR Team leader Graham Rahal.

As Mark James and Davey Hamilton talked about the Yellow Grass due to Oregon’s continuing Drought with James mentioning how “Pancake” flat Portland was with Zero elevation! With Davey saying That’s Right, but just looking around I can see Hills and Mount Rainer in the distance…

Yo Davey, I’m pretty Freakin’ certain that was Mount Hood nearby  Portlandd, Oregon you were looking at!

As I can still recall ‘Ol bloody Nige’, aka Il Lione’, nee Red 5’, ergo Nigel Mansell talking about looking at the Snow on Mount Hood when racing down the Backstretch at Portland!

And at 11,249 feet it’s Oregon’s tallest Mountain and lies only 50-miles East/South East of Portland. Whilst Mount Tahoma, ergo Mt Rainier is 176 miles NE in Warshington…

Qualifying

So the first Bits ‘O Drama came in the first session, ie.; round-1, Group 1 when Colton Herta, like everyone else Slamming the Turn-1 Kerbing’ to make time, went wide and Smacked the outer Armco retaining Barrier! Resulting in a Bent/Broken front Steering Arm/Toe link which the Andretti Crrew replaced lightning Quick, since Herta was able to return Justin-time’ to Knock Out Kyle Kirkwood with a single flying lap!

Then in Round 1 Group 2, two of CGR’s “Heavy Hitters,” i.e.; Dixon and Ericsson Failed to advance to the Round 2 Fast 12 Shootout. As Dixon rolls off P16 and Ericsson 18th.

Whilst One of the most impressive Drivers of the Day Had to be Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard. As the Rookie went P1’ in Round-1 Group 2 and then followed that up by being second Quickest in the Fast 12

Shootout, advancing to the Fast Six Shootout.

Joining Lundgaard in the Scrum for Pole were Yawn! All three Penske Boyz’, with Alex Palou and Pato O’Ward joining them.

And it’s funny, but I’ve come to really Not like Josef Newgarden this season, and Didn’t want Him on Pole! For which thankfully, ScottyMac’ Threw Down with a Mega’ lap in His Team Penske Freightliner Hot Rod. Ahem Roger, why Aren’t you on the “Blower” to Freightliner to resume being Title Sponsor for Portland?

As McLaughlin claimed His third career IndyCar Pole with a time of 0:58.2349, with Newgarden second and Will Power third. Lundgaard was Best of The Rest in fourth, while Palou led O’Ward on Row 3.

But remember, Newgarden had to take a six place Grid Penalty for an unapproved fifth engine change and will roll off P8. As everybody from P3-8 moves up one position. Hence the revised starting order was an All Penske Front Row with McLaughlin and Power.

Row 2 featured Lundgaard and Palou. Row 3 had both Arrow McLaren Sp Drivers with O’Ward ahead of Felix Rosenqvist. And Colton Herta starts on the inside of Row 4 with Newgarden alongside Him.

But the $64k Questione was How would the Grid fair on the start of the race when 25 Indy Cars went Hurtlin’ into Turn-1 of the Dreaded Festival Curves! And would the Series do anything to keep the Drivers from short cutting the turn by Bouncing Over the Kerbs?

Turnn-1 Video Primer…

During Qualie’, somebody on the IndyCar Radio Broadcast noted that Turn-1 went from a robust 78-feet down to a very tight 30-feet. Whilst Driver Analyst Davey Hamilton said He was gonna Have to try Jumping the Shark at Turn-1, presumably in the IndyCar 2X Seater? With Davey saying He thought a simple fix to get Drivers to Quit Stealing so much Kerb’ would to be adding more Rumble Strips.

While Here’s Racer’s Marshall Pruett’s Turn-1 video over Portland’s “Signature” feature, the Dreaded Festival Curves, for which Marshall naturally Quotes entirely Different track widths. Check it Out…

https://racer.com/2022/09/03/video-inside-portlands-turn-1/

Although Surprisingly, they All managed to get thru Turn-1 Cleanly, without the usual Pile Up in the Festival Curves!

INDYCAR: Portland’s Race Day Sunday Topping

As this Chance Encounter was the Cherry on top of my most enjoyable Day’s return outing to Portland International Raceway!

Following the conclusion of the Grand Prix of Portland, “My Driver” Colin and I were walking back to His Car. After Colin had told me that the line for our second Shuttle Bus to our remote Parkig lot was so long, that by the time we got on it, we’d be to our Car! So we decided to walk back instead, which was fine with me, especially after having been Sitting All Day long!

Suddenly, a slow moving Car stopped alongside us and offered us a ride. With the unknown Driver telling us we could probably walk as fast as He was moving, but His Car Had Air Conditioning! As I have Zero Clue if He saw my white Cane that was being used in an Unorthodox “Hook ‘N Ladder” fashion?

Mark said it’s a Sedan, low to the ground. So watch your Head, as I got into the front passenger seat! As Mark was a super nice, friendly person who told us He was Working the Event. Oh? What do you Do?

I’m the District Manager for Total Quartz (Oil) and was working the event for Graham Rahal’s Car, which we’re the Primary sponsor of. And I was shuttling Clients Back ‘N Forth to the Timing Stand on Pitlane…

As I found myself unable to resist, and said isn’t that “Toe-Towel” as Graham (Rahal) pronounces it? To which Mark replied Toe-Towel, Total. They’re totalEnergy now, and we’re the Fourth largest Oil Company in the World!

To which I said, I know about total, since I’m a longtime Formula 1 Fan. To which Mark made an astute observation towards. Noting How Competitive IndyCar racing is vs. F1 being a Manufacturer’s Parade!

So I asked Him how did Graham do today? He finished fifth. Although I found it funny How I was far more interested in Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s (RLLR) newest rookie Driver Christian Lundgaard, saying He’s been doing pretty good lately. Not wishing to mention How I’m Rooting for Vanna, I wanna Buy A Vowel! Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Motorsports David Malukas to win the Rookie Of the Year (ROY) title instead!

Oh, Lundgaard Didn’t do so well today. He Hit one of our Banners in the Festival Curves, got it wrapped around His Nose and Had to Pit. Then He Stalled His Car in the Pits… Before I asked How Do Jac Not Bloody Nige” Harvey Do? Oh, He finished somewhere Mid-pack, I think.

Upon returning Home Sunday evening, I learned that Harvey finished P15, ironically One place behind Malukas. Whilst Lundgaard finished P21…

Mark told me that Total Quartz was Graham’s Primary Sponsor for five races this season, when I noted Graham’s revolving cadre of Primary Sponsors, albeit United Rentals was the only one I could think of. But when I asked Mark if they were an Associate Sponsor during the other liveries, He said that Total Quartz was Always on Graham’s rear wing and front wing Endplates.

As Total Specialties USA, which I can only Arse-Sume is Total Quartz’s “Parent” Company. Signed a Multi-year agreement Wayback in 2018 to be the Official Lubricants partner of RLLR, for which I can vaguely remember Graham Rahal making the announcement for. Which I think Graham said was a five year deal?

So I asked Mark if He was going to Monterey? Nope, but His Regional Manager was.

And I asked Mark if they sponsored any other series? No, but we used to sponsor the TotalExperience, where you get to drive selected Supercars, but we stopped after last year. Oh, you mean like where you can drive a Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. Ontrack?

Yes, we Held it at Pacific Raceways last year. Oh, I know Pacific Raceways intimently! Since I used to live just five miles from the track! And used to attend the SOVREN Historics Vintage Races yearly, along with volunteering for one WASAAC

Shelby Track Day outing a long time ago. Where they even made me a Corner Worker even though I couldn’t read the Car Numbers!

Yeah I got to drive the Ferrari 488 GTB and Porsche 911 GT3R there last year?

Did you drive a car to the track? No, I Drove them at Pacific Raceways. I got the Ferrari (488 GTB) up to 155mph on that long Front Straight and then wasn’t sure if I would get it Whoa’ed Down for that long first sweeping turn? Oh you mean the 180-degree “Sweeper” (turn) before you go Downhill into Turns 3A-3B, Yes!

Ok Guys, this is about as Far as I can take you. About 75-feet further. Before we Thanked Mark for the ride and walked the rest of the way back to our awaiting Chariot which just so happened to have a Jaguar parked alongside us…

INDYCAR: Portland Race Day Edition

Damn! Why Did I Wait so long to Go Back to Portland?

A Fortnight before this year’s IndyCar race at Portland, following the rain delayed final Oval race at Gateway,  Claudio’, my former Austin F1 Sherpa asked me if I wanted to go to this year’s Grand Prix of Portland? After I’d “Passed” on my last opportunity four years ago…

Thus I Never thought I’d be going back to Portland International Raceway, (PIR) especially since Not setting foot upon the property since the final Champ Car race held Wayback on June 10, 2007!

Fifteen Years Ago, I scribbled the following Yarn here upon No Fenders about my last visit to Portland International Raceway in a Post titled Riding the Rails.

http://www.nofenders.net/2007/06/riding-rails.html

And then some 10 years ago, I was still wistfully Opining for IndyCar to return to the Rose City in a Mega’ Five-part No Fenders tomes titled Ode to Portland: Can it already be 5-Years Gone?

http://www.nofenders.net/2012/06/ode-to-portland-can-it-already-be-5.html

As even then, it was somewhat “sketchy” flunderin’ my way round PIR as a single Blind person, but now, No Freakin’ Way! As I still Chucled over a Food Vendor complimenting me on my fine “Walking Stick,” my White Cane 15 years ago. Uhm, Here’s Your Sign!

Hence I’ve read that the seating capacity’s been massively reduced, now to only 30,000 Attendance and that the Grandstands are All Temporary Structures!

Leading me to Arse-sume’ that my past, yearly Seating location back in the Good ‘Ol Dazes of what will forever be known as the Budweiser/G.I. Joes 200 CART/PPG World Series West Grandstand No longer exists?

For which it seemed that my favourite IndyCar Radio Pit Reporter Ryan Marin confirmed this when He was busy calling the action Saturday morning during Practice and Qualifying, when covering Turns 4-7 by saying that it was now “Prime” RV Camping “Real Estate.”

As this was back when the IndyCar race was Portland’s largest single day event with some 65,000-plus Fans in Attendance on Father’s Day! Now making me just Shake my Head over why IndyCar cannot find a local, Title Sponsor, Seriously?

Whilst for the final three years of Chump Carz’, i.e.; Champ Car World Series circa 2005-07 I sat Solo three rows from the Top of a Grandstand just prior to the Festival Curve, where I can still remember wafting clouds of Tyre ‘N Brake Smoke  rising Skywards from another Game ‘O chicken over who’ll be the last of the Great, late Brakers?

Sunday morning, rising early. Frick, I was awake an Hour before my Alarm clock was set to go off some Gory two Hours prior to leaving, Urgh! As my Chariot, a 2012 “Arrest Me” Red Ford Mustang picked me up at 8:15AM. As my “Driver” Colin & I set off for our four Hour drive to Portland after stopping for Petrol. Although we must have made really good time, since even after making one Pitstop at a Rest Area, and then a second one at a nearby Portland Sonic Fast food restaurant. I believe we parked in a PIR Parking lot that charged 20 Smackeroos’ ($20) around High Noon.

Then we Hopped on one of the School Shuttle Busses that was packed full, which must have been High School busses since my knees were only touching the seat ahead, after a very awkward instruction of how to get into my seat while Holding up the line! Before riding to the Main Gate to ultimately meet “Bonnie & Clyde,” Err Claudio’, Nelie and Kevin, who’d come down from Tacoma for the race…

Standing in line at the Box Office/Will Call, there seemed to be a very Deserate Scalper vainly trying to unload His vast amount ‘O tickets as it creeped closer to the Green Flag flying, for which there were No Takers! And as we stepped up to the window and had our tickets handed to us, after my phone rang with Nelie saying She could see us in line. As we turned to go, I Heard the somewhat muted roar of the Indy Cars driving Ontrack to begin their warm-up laps!

Showing our tickets and having my Backpack politely searched, as I’d brought only the bare essentials, albeit I Didn’t need the windbreaker I’d been told to bring along! Since it was an Uber warm day for Mwah! Being accustomed to our moderate Coast climate. I was glad I’d added a second bottle of water, as Colin remarked on the way Home that it had been 89-91 degrees in Portland! Although there was a decent breeze as I dripped sweat…

While I’m Happy that the Racetrack seems to have Relaxed some of their previous restrictions, i.e.; allowing personal coolers with Food and Water into the Track, along with portable “Camping” Seats. Since I can still recall us Sneaking in Food ‘N Beverages at the West End Grandstands Wayback’ when…

Thus I Heard the roar of 25 Snarling, Angry “Murder Hornet” Killer Wasps go Shrieking down the front Straight for the Green flag just prior to our stepping inside the confines of the racetrack! And after putting in earplugs, our Quintet trundled off to our first seating area, sitting in a Grandstand, albeit obviously I had Zero Clue where we were? Although apparently we were in the East End Grandstands? Since I was later told we were sitting behind the Pits with some sorta Chicane. Which I’d Arse-sume would be the Turns 9-11/12 Comples.

As Nelie Helped me up the stairs and to our seats, before telling me She couldn’t figure out if those were the leaders or the Back markers going by one at a time? As there seemed to be three cars already on their own.

Asking Her what colours they were? She told me that one car was completely Green, which I quickly surmised was Jimmie Johnson, since I’d read previously on Mike Silver’s The Pit Window, that was the best way to describe Johnson’s livery this weekend. So I Quicky surmised these were the Tail gunner Charlie’s, i.e.; Johnson, Dalton Kellett and Castroneves…

Then Claudio asked me if I wanted to go to another section? So we Hopped on another Banana yellow School Bus that took us around to the Front Straight. Before Claudio asked me if I wanted to go to the Handicap Seats He and Kevin Had four years ago? Standing behind Claudio with White Cane in Hand lookin’ “Purdy.” Claudio Jawed with the Gate Attendant for a good 5-7mins before He gave up and told us we could go in and sit there for a few minutes…

Naturally we were at the wrong end of the Grandstands along the Front Straight, since Claudio told me I’d have to step, Err climb over the seats! For which naturally I thought this is a Bad idea, but In for a Pound, You Know, Hya! And after I’d awkwardly navigated stepping over the first two rows, Claudio told me to move to the left and use the Chain-link Fencing to Balance!

But this must have looked precarious, since a super nice woman immediately came down from Her seat, took my Hand/Arm and Helped me up another two rows before I sat down!

Although I knew immediately we weren’t sitting in the Handicap seating, little did I know we were in the El Premio seating, wich cost $120, or Double our General Admission tickets including the ridiculous $10 Handling Fee!

Seated down relatively low was one of the Highlights of the race for Mwah! Since I could absolutely Hear the Noises of individual racing cars entire Pitstops. Beginning wit either the low speed rumble or Wog-Wog-Wogging down Pitlane on the limiter. Then next in unison, the precision whir of the four Wheel Guns!

Followed by what sounded like a two-three seconds gap of Silence whilst packing the thirsty Honda’s and Chevy’s absolutely Full of Fuel, Err Ethanol.

Then the strange electronic frequency Harmonic of engaging the steering wheel mounted Clutch to varying degrees of RPM’s, before the obligatory Screeching of freshly mounted Firestones searching for Adhesion!

As I could even discern the occasional Squealing of tyres leaving their respective Pit Stalls! Along with swearing I Heard two Indy Cars Stalling!

Learning afterwards that both Conor Daly and Christian Lundgaard Had Stalled during their respective Pitstops! I’m guessing I Heard Conor?

Whilst I could also immediately discern that the Track’s muted PA System was playing the live IndyCar Radio Feed, since I Heard Michael “Screech” Young talking animatedly over something occurring from His reporting position in the Festival Curves…

INDYCAR: Portland Race Day Edition – Mid Race and Beyond

As a Good Time was Had by All in the Rose City!

As typical, your Humble No Fenders Scribe Tomaso cannot Scribble a Short story. Hence I’ve broken up my Portland Race Day’s review into Two part Harmony. Whale’, actually three, Oh Never Mind!

Picking up where I last left off, sitting roughly Halfway down the Front Straight with Claudio’, I enjoyed the Soothing sounds of the Pitlane action along with the Siren Song of 25 Bad Fast, Angry Mutha Fokker’ Killer Hornet Indy Cars Vroom Vrooming by relentlessly! With Claudio asking me who’s in the Blue Car? Saying you’ve gotta tell me more than that Dude, there’s multiple Blue cars!

Then telling Him the leader ScottyMac’, aka Scott McLaughlin was in the Blue ‘N Black Freightliner No. 3, which soon became a running joke about the Black ‘N Blue car, Hya! Who’s in the #2? Josef Newgarden. Oh, it’s a Black and White car. Which Car is Power in? He’s driving the Verizon No. 12 which should be red fading to black, McLaughlin drives the #2? Who drives the No. 4? Who drives the Blue Jones Soda Car? And so it went!

And it’s Funny how I thought I was wearing my Bad Arse Justin Wilson T-Shirt but Nobody ever said a word the whole day about what I was wearing, and it’s pretty Funny when you’re Blind and trying to pick out a racing T-Shirt you Haven’t worn in a Zillion years, but I digress…

After awhile, I asked where the others were? So Claudio went off to look for them, before my “Driver” colin came and sat next to me in the Grandstand in the Baking Heat! Asking Him if He could tell what lap it was? To which Colin soon replied that it was lap 41. (Of 110)

Yet as Good ‘Ol Awnty’ Harriet would say: I was as Happy as a Clam at High Tide! Especially since not only could I indulge in the Audio Soundtrack of individual Pitstop sequences. But I marveled in telling Colin that I could actually see glimpses of Black Ghost-like shadows of each racing car Flickering past me! For which I still haven’t figured out if I was actually seeing the cars, or more likely, it was their Millisecond Blocking of the Brilliant Sunshine that allowed me to “See” each cars “Trailing” Wakes akin to Boats passing by on water…

Also telling Colin How the Indy Cars suddenly had an entirely different (Audio) tone eintering the Festival Curves, to which He told me that the wind Had shifted from lef to right. Whilst I also Heard the occasional missing of a Gear shift which seemed Odd, since they’ve got Paddle Shifters, but I could Hear the Auditory Clap of a Sloppy Upshift! Which I Don’t know if it was from the same car or what?

Later Colin went and Corralled the rest of our party, Claudio, Nelie and Kevin and Claudio asked if I wanted to move up Higher in the Grandstand? So Colin Helped the Blind Guy step over several more rows of Bleacher seats Wham! As I Smacked my Shin against a Bleacher! Which I could still feel two Days later…

As colin just gave me His Hand and said I Didn’t need to bother with my White Cane until we were about midway up. Then I asked Clyde how far is the #2 Behind the No. 12? Which car is that? The Black & White Hitachi car…

As Not sure why, since I typically Don’t Root for the Penske boyz! But I just really want Will Power to win this year’s IndyCar Championship!

Whilst I’ve also totally taken A Shine to ScottyMac’ this season. As He just seems like a total Breath of Fresh Air for Team Penske! And His Quip to Michael Young during the Nashville Rain Delay about Rainbows being Upside Down in New Zealand was Priceless Mate!

Then Claudio asked if I wanted to go up to the top of the Grandstand? Telling me there’s a nice breeze there and I can sit with my back against the fencing. So once again the Blind Guy was climbing over more Bleacher seats…

But I knew immediately something Had Happened in Turn-1 by the way IndyCar Radio’s Michael “Screech” young was exuberantly Yelling! As later I’d learn that Rinus VeeKay had Hip-checked ‘Ol JJ’, nee Jimmie Johnson into the Armco Barrier! Bringing out the Days only Full course Caution, which was on lap 84.

As Kevin told me there was a Yellow Flag Ontrack. It was weird Hearing the sizeable Delay in the track going Full Yellow and the Stragglers slowing down! As Kevin Had said yellow and then several cars went Screaming By at Full chat! Which made me think of How Race Control typically Doesn’t immediately Close the Pits…

And it was interesting How much the Noise level changed after the Pace Car finally picked up the leader. For which the field completely cycled past the Pits for another lap, surmising the Pits weren’t Open?

When the Green Flag finally flew, I could audibly Hear Messer Young really Hotting Up over whatever Argie Bargie’ was  occurring in the Festival Curves, before the race settled back down! Then Claudio told me there were 11-laps remaining, and it just felt like a procession to the end…

When the Chequered Flag Flew, I asked Claudio where did the No. 2 finish? To which He erroneously told me the #2 Had finished Ahead of the No. 12, to which I Yelled Outloud FUCK! Which afterwards seemed like a really Funny reaction Trackside!

Then Colin correctly informed Mwah that the finishing order was the No. 3, 12 and #9, Huh? Where did Scott Dixon come from? Before Claudio told me that my “boy” Pato O’Ward had finished fourth. And that Newgarden was P8, which made me Happy!

Then we leisurely made our way down to the totally opposite end of our Grandstand, to it’s Only Aisle! As I know Grandstands cost money, but I find it totally Unacceptable having Only One Aisle on One End of the entire Grandstands! As that’s definitely Not very ADA Friendly, and just seems like it’s inviting trouble with Falling Spectators! Especially since Thars No Alcohol being consumed at races, El Correctomundo?

And Speakin’ of Drinking. Best line of the Day I Heard when we were waiting to catch the Shuttle Bus afterwards, was some man saying He’d spent too much time in the Sun! To which one of His Buddies Ribbed Him about Having too much to Drink? No, I’m an Ex-Sailor, I totally know How to Drink!

As we elected to wait for a second Bus, as Nelie wanted me to be able to sit down, since the Busses were All Standing Room only, which the wait was probably only 10-15mins Max.

As our Bus Driver maintined a Good sense ‘O Humour after a Grouchy Fan Yelled at Him repeatedly to S-T-O-P! After we’d only gone some 150 yards that He Didn’t want to walk to His car, WTF!

As the Driver casually said after starting up again, Next stop Portland International Airport!

Exiting at the main Gate, the five of us walked together until it was time to go our separate ways back to our vehicles, readily agreeing to come back again next year!

As colin and I set off for the three Hour “Cruise” back Home Again to Bumfiddle Florence! Whilst being passed by one Ferrari and later a completely modified late 2019-ish Ford Mustang GT.

With colin saying it had every Aftermarket Body Panel, Euro tail lights, rear window louvers, etc. you could possibly think of!

And when it Burr-rapped it’s loud Pedal to Squirt Ahead of Colin’s “Plain Jane” Mustang when exiting the Freeway. It was overly loud with it’s Aftermarket Exhaust system, to which I gleefully told Colin that it just sounded super Beefy!

As it wouldn’t be until 9PM-ish Sunday evening that I’d sit down to have “Zoey the Princess Warrior,” my current Zoomtext Fusion 2022 Screen reader read me Raymond Hando’s For the Love of Indy’s Portland First Impressions Blog post. In order to find out what had actually Happened to each driver during the race and overall “Flow” of the event. Since I’d been completely “blind” during the entire actual race due to the PA System’s volume being so muted…

HYDROS: Jimmy Shane now only A Few roostertails Behind the late Dean Chenoweth

As that’s some pretty legendous’ company He’s closing in upon…

While I realize it’s definitely akin to comparing “Apples to Oranges,” and Arse-sumedly only the most Diehard Racing Aficionados will be aware of this. Since it took your Humble No Fenders Scribe a fair amount ‘O Digging! Nevertheless, Scotty thee Iceman 2.0’ Dixon’s surpassing of SuperMario’, nee Mario Andretti for second most career IndyCar victories made me think of this, since Ye Blogosphere’s been Chock O’Block Full of Dissecting Mario, Scott and will Powers accomplishments. Whilst the “Fastest boats on H-2-O” have been on my mind Ah-lately, following the return of Seattle’s Seafair this August.

As I’m still sorta pinching myself over a conversation I had a few months ago now at our local El Mexicano restaunte here in Bumfiddle Florence! I sat at the far end of our table next to Carol, a super nice lady who told me She’d lived in San Diego for 31 years.

So I casually told Her about having gone to the Del Mar Fairgrounds once a Zillion years ago for an IMSA GTP Sports Car race, and Seaworld to “See” Shamu!

As I still recall that “Mean Jean” Alesi was driving a shiny red Ferrari F40, which I believe was appropriately sporting the number 40! And that “Gentleman John” Andretti was part of the Miller High Life Porsche 962 driving roster. Whilst I was Rootin’ primarily for the Bud Light Jaguars…

And then I casually mentioned the Hydroplane race at Mission Bay, to which Carol told me that once they Had to make a run for it when Chip Hanauer’s Hydro’ Flipped onto the Beach! Presumably during His Miss Budweiser years?

Then for the Kicker’, Carol told me their next door neighbor was the (Unlimited) Driver who Died in Mexico City, to which I immediately said Bill Muncey, OMG! Like He was only the Sport’s Biggest legend ever! Said they were social, but didn’t see much of them, and She heard His wife Fran owned a resort at Lake Tahoe… As Who’d Ah-Thunk It? That I’d be sitting in a local Mexican restaurant in Bumbfiddle Florence talking about Unlimited Hydroplanes and two of the Sports most legendous’ Drivers, i.e.; chip Hanaure and Bill Muncey with somebody I’d never met before, Ariva Ariva Ariva!

http://www.nofenders.net/2011/10/hydros-day-sports-king-met-his-maker.html

Dave Villwock is the H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes All-time winner with 67 career victories prior to this year’s San Diego season finale. Whilst the Dom or Godfather of Unlimited Hydroplanes, the legendous’ Bill Muncey won 62 times in His career before His Death at Acapulco in 1981. With His “Apprentice” Chip Hanauer being the Sports third winningest driver with 61 victories. Before you drop down to the late Dean Chenoweth who scored 25 APBA Unlimited victories, fourth most in Unlimited History.

As it’s Hard to believe that it’s almost a Half Century ago as a Wee lad’, I was crushed by my All-time favourite Unlimited Hydroplane driver losing to His Arch Nemesis on Lake Washington during the 1973 UIM World Championship! Since although that Donnybrook of a race is still indelibly etched into my memory banks. I simply chose the Miss Budweiser since Tomas Sr. was a Died in the Wool Pay ‘N Pak man. Thus presumably I didn’t even know who Dean Chenoweth was that unsuccessful day? Since I lost the Bet with my Pops’ and Had to wash the family car, Sigh!

Yet Chenoweth was simply another of His Bombastic Owner Bernie Little’s shrewd choices as Miss Budweiser Skippers’, since Bernie was the Al Davis of Unlimited Hydroplane Owners! And I’d say that Bernie coined the phrase “I like Winners!” Way before we’d be Hearing Chip Ganassi say it…

Dean cut His teeth racing inboards and amassed some 70 Odd wins along with three “Junior” Inboards Championships before moving up the ladder enroute to winning more titles before making His Unlimited debut in 1968. With Chenoweth at the tiller of the “radical” Lead Sled Miss Smirnoff, who’s Boss Joe Schoenith was another Colourful Owner! Being the first Unlimited Hydroplane employing the now long, de riggour Picklefork front nose design.

Dean scored His first two Unlimited victories the following year at the Indiana’s Governors Cup and the Tri-Cities Atomic Cup before resigning at season’s end.

Thus Dean got His ultimate break upon replacing the Bud’s retiring Bill Sterett for 1970, and the rest as they say, is History!

As Chenoweth would claim four wins including His first APBA Gold Cup victory and National High Points Championship that season. In a career that would span twelve years driving for Little, resulting in claiming four APBA Gold cup victories and four National High Points Championships. Along with amassing a total of 25 Unlimited Hydroplane wins.

And although I didn’t know it Wayback nearly some 50 years ago, Chenoweth’s Miss Budweiser was the former Pride of Pay ‘N Pak, albeit three years older and 1,000lbs Heavier! Versus the current Pak with future Bud chauffeur Mickey Remund at it’s controls.

As it was a typical Gloomy Seattle day, Grey Clouds dispersing Mist and more of that Wet Stuff while these two drivers put on the show of the Century! Since although Remund got the Jump on Chenoweth with the preferred inside lane, these two fierce competitors went Deck to Deck for the entire five laps on the three mile “International” course with Remund holding off Chenoweth by a mere 25-feet!

But it was Chenoweth getting the best of the Pak after Remund’s Hydroplane threw a propeller blade during that year’s Gold Cup at Tri-cities, along with Dean winning His second National High Points Championship before being forced into retirement.

Yet it was the successive Miss Budweiser Hulls simply known as the Juggernaut! The mighty Rolls Royce Griffons Beerwagon with “Dynamo Dean” at it’s controls beginning in 1979 that cemented Chenoweth being my All-time Numero Uno Driver! As Dean, who’d been wooed out of retirement after five years wasn’t even phased after a wicked Blowover on Lake Washington when attempting a World Speed record and traveling above some 215mph!

http://www.lesliefield.com/personalities/dean_chenoweth_dynamo_dean_and_the_griffon_bud.htm

As the Bud was untouchable between 1980-1982 with Dynamo Dean at it’s controls. Winning Back to Back APBA Gold cups and National High Points Championships, including six of eight races in 1981 before his untimely Death in 1982.

As Chenoweth wasn’t able to “Walk Away” this time from another Nasty Blow Over at the Tri-Cities Columbia Cup on July 31, 1982. And perished at the Age of 44 on the Mighty Columbia.

Ironically exactly 40 years later this past July, Jimmy Shane at the tiller of the Miss Home Street won His twenty-second H1 Unlimited Hydroplane race at the Tri-Cities HAPO Columbia cup. As remember the number 22 Y’all.

As “Seattle’s” (Kent, WA) Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum’s website has a Great article on Dean Chenoweth with multiple photos you can check out by searching their site for The Dean Chenoweth Story…

HYDROS: Jimmy Shane Set to Plow Ahead of Jim Kropfeld

Perhaps as soon as this year’s Bayfair Regatta at San Diego…

Jim Kropfeld’s initiation into Boat racing began with being a Crew member on a Friend’s limited Inboard “motorboat” in 1961, before making His driving Debut in 1964. Kropfeld liked to Joke about His early career, noting how He’d Drive Anything that Floated! And that when you’re at the rear of the pack on the Ohio River, it’s some of the roughest water you’ll ever race on! Stating that He Didn’t do a whole lot of winning, but the experience was priceless…

Kropfeld cut His teeth racing the Midwest limited Hydroplane circuit, the same proving grounds for such Unlimited Hydroplane luminaries as Bill Muncey, Dean Chenoweth, Ron Munssen, Bill Sterett and Bill Cantrell to name a few. As All five of those Skippers’ would become National High Points Driving Champions and APBA Gold Cup winners, which is pretty esteemed company to be mentioned in!

While former Unlimited Hydroplane Historian Fred Farleynotes that Jim had some spirited battles on Seattle’s Green Lake during the late 1970’s aboard the Country boy vs. another future Unlimited Driver named Steve Reynolds aboard His White Lightning/Pay ‘n Pak in the 225 cubic inch class. Which is pretty Funny, since I think it’s been a long, long time ago since any powerboats were allowed on Green Lake! Just Canoes and Kayaks now Me thinks…

Although it’s also now a really long time ago since Led Zeppelin Rocked Seattle at Green Lake’s Outdoors Aqua Theatre on Sunday, May 11, 1969!

Kropfeld caught soon-to-be Boss Bernie Little’s eye upon winning the  Grand Prix Class at Detroit in 1982, as the Unlimiteds Undercard. Just weeks prior to Miss Budweiser’s Dean Chenoweth’s Death at Tri-Cities. As Little offered Kropfeld the drive and the rest as they say was History…

Kropfeld drove the Miss Budweiser between 1982-1989 and firmly cemented Himself as my second All-time favourite Unlimited Hydroplane Driver when piloting what was the Anthesis of piston powered Hulls, those All Conquering Miss Budweiser Rolls Royce Griffon Beerwagons.

Kropfeld won All 22 of His Unlimited victories driving the Bud between 1983-1989, including three National High Points Championships in 1984 and 1986-1987.

And although the Miss Budweiser Grifon Hulls of 1980-1984 are my favourits, I still recall Jim driving what was known as the “bubble bud,” the very first Unlimited Hull to sport a canopy. Although my memory thinks it was a tinted canopy that opened backwards, since I tend to recall Jimmy’ motoring back to the Dock with it open and water gushing around the Picklefork sponsons…

These now long de riggour F-16 Cockpit Safety Canopies were pioneered by Ron Jones and the Budweiser Crew following Dean Chenoweth’s Death and Kropfeld later clamed He felt it Had Saved His life after a collision with Scotty Pierce’s Mr. Pringles in the final Heat of Miami’s 1988 season opener that Broke His Neck! As Jim would return after a year out of the cockpit before being summarily Fired by Bernie Little for complaining the latest ’89 Bud turbine Boat was too difficult to turn.

http://lesliefield.com/personalities/jim_kropfeld_remembered.htm

As I believe that Jim Kropfeld has the fifth most career APBA/H1 Unlimited Hydroplane wins behind his predecessor Dean Chenoweth’s 25? But I haven’t been able to find anything to corroborate this…

I first learned of Jimmy Shane, a Maryland native who used to live in my former backyard of Covington, WA a Decade ago when He came upon my proverbial “Radar” when winning His Debutante H1 Unlimited victory in Tri-Cities at the tiller of the U-5 Graham Trucking Hydroplane in His first full H1 Unlimited season.

Like many, Jimmy was born into a family of Boat Racers, with both of His Parents and Sister All racing and winning Championships in various APBA classes, with Jimmy beginning His Boat Racing career at the tender age of eight. Shane then steadily progressed thru the ranks of Outboards and limited Hydroplanes before getting His first taste of a big boat in a test in 2006, aboard one of Ted Porter’s Formula Boats at the Age of 21.

Shane then spent the next two years as the U-1/U-7 Formula Boats Backup Driver before sitting a year out. Jimmy then apparently returned to Ted Porter’s team once again as a Backup Driver before finally contesting His first Full season behind the tiller of the U-5 Graham Trucking Unlimited Hydroplane in 2012.

As Shane won that aforementioned Tri-Cities Columbia Cup race in only His third outing that year and then further cemented His intentions by winning the season finale’s UIM Orix Cup in Doha, Qatar to finish runner-up to Steve David in the U-6 Oh boy Oberto/Miss Madison.

In 2013, Jimmy’s final season driving for Graham Trucking, He began the season with a Bang by winning His second consecutive Orix Cup, this time being the season opening round. Then Jimmy won the final three races of the year on Lake Washington in Seattle, Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and San Diego’s Mission Bay to claim His first National High Points Championship.

Following Steve David’s retirement, Jimmy slotted into the Miss Madison for the 2014 season and has been a winning fixture there ever since! As Shane claimed the first of His five APBA Gold Cup victories (to date) at Detroit that year, along with the Columbia Cup enroute to His second National High Points Championship.

As Jimmy would go on a proverbial “Tear,” winning the next three seasons in-a-row aboard what’s now the Miss Home Street after Oh Boy Oberto sadly departed sponsoring the Miss Madison to win five consecutive National High Points Championships, reportedly only the second driver in Unlimited History to do so! Before Andrew Tate in the U-9 Les Schwab/Jones Racing Hydroplane ended Jimmy’s streak in 2018.

Shane is also currently tied with the legendous’ Gar Wood with five gold Cup victories apiece, winning Back-to-Back in 2014-2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021, with No Gold Cup or H1 Unlimited season taking place in 2020 due to COVID-19. As Jimmy only trails Bill Muncey, Dave Villwock and Chip Hanauer for most Gold Cup victories, Aye Karumba!

At Age 36 and currently the youngest Skipper in the Fleet, with six after winning the 2021 title, and presumably shortly His seventh National High Points Championship Crown being clinched at San Diego. Along with His five gold Cup wins. One could certainly argue that Jimmy’s the Best Driver at the moment. And definitely He’s in the Best equipment, which probably Doesn’t bode well for His fellow Unlimited Hydroplane competitors!

As Shane’s worst enemy this season has been Himself! Having lost two races by being Disqualified for going under the minimum sspeed at Guntersville’s Gold Cup race which He led wire-to-wire. And then Having Jumped the Starting Gun at Seafair where He also led from wire-to-wire.

Although Jimmy’s won twice this year at Madison Indiana and Tri-Cities, WA, having amassed 22 H1 Unlimited victories! Thus tying the late, Great Jim Kropfeld’s career tally, and ironically exactly 40 years after Dean Chenoweth’s Death on the Columbia River…
