Three Slices ‘O Corvette Carmania Carved Up’

As should I go for the Pumpkin, Mincemeat or Cheesecake for Dessert? Uhm, may be a slice of All three, Wee-wee Mademoiselle, Mon Cherrie?

Ah, the Aroma ‘O Stuffing, did somebody say Stuffing? Uhm, Turkey, Pigskin and Pumpkin pie. Now All we need is a Chevrolet Corvette or three and Apple pie? Oopsdaisy, Think that’s a different Holiday?

As what better way to celebrate Turkey-Lurkey Day this year than with three vastly different topics wrapped around three slices ‘o Americana, Uhm Uhm Finger lickin’ good? As here’s the Main course Folks…

Cunningham Crusader’s

Although I never know when they’ll be on, meaning I miss many of their TV Airings, recently I caught two episodes of Motortrend TV’s Autobiography over thou Halloween weekend. The first was about Briggs Cunningham taking three 1960 Corvette’s to Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans, France. As this was the first year ever that those Thunderin’ front engine American V-8’s raced in le 24 Heurs du Mans. (61 years ago)

Whilst the second episode was All about that Manson Fellah’ and those Beach Boys Ferraris…

Funny, but when I think of Briggs Cunningham and Le Mans, for reasons unknown, I invariably think about his earlier creations, most notably his le Monster! When Briggs ran a pair of modified  Cadillacs in the 1950 event. Although I tend to forget that Cunningham was also a prestigious racer, and I believe this was the first of his many outings at Le Mans as a driver, then Age 43.

And whilst I tend to only think of Briggs Automotive accomplishments, arguably his biggest claim to fame was Skippering the winning yacht Columbia in the 1958 America’s Cup challenge.

Messer Cunningham led the most privileged ‘O life’s, having come from a family of considerable wealth, beginning with his Grandfather’s River Boating and Shipping concerns. As his father Briggs Sr. moved from the Meat Packing business, later becoming President and Founder of the Citizens National Bank, Director of the Pennsylvania Railroad and later Chief Financier of the Proctor and Gamble Company.

And that was before marrying into further Money when tying nuptials with Lucy Bedford, an heiress of the Standard Oil Company, her Grandfather E.T. Bedford being a Co-Founder and Director of the Oil Company! As Briggs attended his very first motor racing event, the 1930 Monaco Grand Prix on their Honeymoon.

Briggs ran his own Car Company aptly called BS Cunningham Cars between 1950-55 before shuttering it, due to running Afoul of IRS Tax laws requiring Boutique Constructors to show a profit after five years of business.

As Cunningham campaigned  his team’s Cunningham C Designation racecars, the C2R-C6R at Le Mans with modest results, before the catastrophe of the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans along with his Tax issues saw him taking a brief respite from motor racing.

Wasn’t aware that Briggs was a founding member of the American Racing Club Association, )ARCA) the forebearer to today’s SCCA, but do know that Cunningham entered cars won the 1954-55 Sebring 12 Hours events, arguably his biggest accomplishment in racing…

And whilst Cunningham made his last appearance as a racing driver at Le Mans in 1963, then 56 years old.  The focus of the Autobiography TV show was upon the three 1960 Corvette’s he entered for that year’s 24 Heurs du Mans, with the cars being numbered 1-2-3.

As these chassis were extensively modified as the Godfather of Corvettes Zora Arkus-Duntov just so happened to have an experimental 283cid Small Block V-8 with Rodchester Fuel Injection on his Hands that he wanted tested in racing competition. Even though General Motors (GM) along with the other major American Manufacturers had pledged not to participate in Motor Racing as part of the AMA Ban following the 1955 Le Mans tragedy.

The TV show basically retraces the history of each car by denoting them according to their racing number at Le Mans. As the No. 2 car was the first to be reclaimed and is in the hands of noted Car Collector Bruce Meyer, who claims his is the most “Authentic” car since it was restored using many original parts.

If I remember correctly? Since it’s been awhile now and I didn’t scribble any notes immediately afterwards. The No. 1 car caught on fire at Le Mans and then was subsequently discovered in a Wrecking Yard!

The No. 3 Le Mans Corvette was the most elusive and hardest to find, before finally being uncovered when a 70,000sq ft Warehouse was being Cleaned out over a decade ago.

Coolest part about the #3 chassis was that after it was restored, it went back to Le Mans for the Vette’s 50th Anniversary complete with then 91 year old John Fitch at it’s controls! As Fitch and Co-Driver Bob Grossman had finished eighth Overall and 1st in Class in 1960!

Although I’m slightly Cornfused, since apparently John Fitch Died at the Age of 95 on October 31, 2012, which would have only been two years later…

As Y’all can read my previous No Fenders attempt at briefly chronicling Corvette’s History at Le Mans in the following story link below.

AUTOS: Maranello Cruiser' goes Silent, Stuttgart Classic follows..

When a pair of 40 year old Classics gets 21st Century Makeovers, You've gotta wonder is this what the Future Holds for Us?

Ironically, this past weekend of June 13-14 was exactly 50 years to the running of the 38th 24 Hours of Le Mans, when two of Automotives most legendous' Marques fought Hammer 'N Tongs for that year's outright victory of what arguably was then the largest Sporting event, or certainly Motorsports marquee event.

As may be you've heard that the Rebellion-Williams E-Sports team won this past weekend's virtual Le Mans 24H race, which featured such luminaries as Fredrico Suave' and Rubino', nee Fred Alonso and Rubens Barrichello as one team. Along with current Formula 1 Pilotes Chuck Luh-cluck', aka Charles Leclerc, plus Max Verstappen and Lando Norris teaming up for the event...

Alas, as I've been tirelessly Serenading Y'all 'bout lately, what do you do when you're "rationing" your limited amount of CD Audiobooks which have Dried Up due to the local Library being Closed now for 3-plus months due to the COVID 19 Pandemic?

Whale', in my case, I've gravitated towards actually watching; Err, Uhm, Oh Yeah that's right Mary Ellen, I'm Blind! Meaning I'm mostly; SHUSH! Be Berry-Berry Quiet, we're Hunting Wabbits... OOPSADAISY, Wrong Soundtrack; Hya!

Uhm, I meant mostly listening to Thy Telie', primarily the Motor Trend TV Channel. Hey, are you really surprised that I'd gravitate towards this totally Automotive related TV Channel, Eh?

Funny how Time has kept Zoom-Zooming by even though we've been in Lockdown mode here in Oregon since March 13th, albeit many Counties, including Lane have now just graduated to Stage-2 implementation of "Re-Opening" on June 5th, whatever that means Hmm, why does that make me think of an 'Ol Boston Album I bought on vinyl during its initial release - largely Panned by Critics called Stage III; Err, Uhm I meant Third Stage; But I Certainly Digress...

As I've included Thee "launch sequence" track, which I've always enjoyed, but let it at least play thru to Ye beginning of the Cool The Engines track, which is one of the singles from this album...

Over a month ago now, somewheres round May 7th, when I first jotted notes for this riveting; Err, Uhm Electrifying No Fenders story, Z-A-P! I sat down and watched my first ever Gory Electric Vehicles (EV) TV Show.

A fairly entertaining episode of Vintage Voltage, which takes classic automobiles and converts them into fully Electrified Rides. With the episode's vehicle in Questione being a "Clapped-out" Ferrari 308, for which I found what seems to be the final portion of this build?

And then two more episodes I viewed revolved around Volkswagen and Porsche Classics, whose two companies are tightly intertwined. As I enjoyed the modest makeover the Karman Ghia received.

But I was far more interested in the show about the Porsche 914, which sadly wasn't finished due to the Client's constantly changing his Build requests bumping up against the interruption of the COVID 19 Pandemic...

And although I couldn't find anything related to this specific Vintage Voltage's Porsche 914 EV Conversion, Thar seems to be plenty 'O 914's that have made Ye Switch to Electric. As this Porsche was the Highlight of an EV Show in Colorado, albeit I have to say I was more impressed with the EV Skateboard; CRIKEYS!

Nonetheless, I did unearth an article 'bout whether or not Porsche should bring back the 914 as a 21st Century EV.

But if you're A Died in Thee Wool Gearhead like Mwah, albeit a Revhead' Devotee. Which makes discovering a totally new website appropriately titled Petrolicious so very Karmic or Apropos. And especially when you're Blind, then ambulatory noise takes on even more significance regarding your passion for Automobiles...

Although I applaud the remaking of these motoring Classics, and think it's totally Cool to give  them a second lease on life. Thars still nothing better than the sounds of a true Blue' Err Momma Mia! Rosso or Teutonic Silver Internal Combustion engine vehicle!

AUTOS: A Few TV Car Show Rewinds

Although not your prototypical Muscle Car, the 'lil Lancia Fulvia Bred for Rallying Stardom definitely classifies as a "Hot Hatchback!" (Image source: classicdriver.com)
After All, shouldn't we All be getting Our Motors Revved Up over Memorial Day weekend, Going round 'N round in circles for 500 miles...

Ah, thoust continuous spray 'O synchronicity peppers thou Isle 'O Nofendersville again. Since the local Library's been closed over two months now, nearly three with No Gory Audiobooks to Check Out; Egads!

Meaning I've been actually utilizing my Cable TV Service quite Heavily, which typically sits Dormant weekly until Motor Racing arrives on the weekends; but I Digress...

Although it would be Cool if we could have either the 2011, 2013 or 2016 Indianapolis 500 races rebroadcasted Sunday! As we All know, those are All owned by ABC.

Yet NBC will Host an Extended Play 4 Hours Behemoth of last year's epic Indianapolis 500 Battle Royale of Simon Pagenaud v Alexander Rossi on the intended Date of  this year's 104th running of the Indy 500, with Rossi & Pagenaud as expert Driver Analysts beginning at 11AM Pacific.

Meanwhile ESPN2 will Host an All Day Open Wheel Racing Smorgasbord, albeit going Head-to-Head with NBC's Indy 500 Broadcast...

Thus during the COVID 19 "Lockdown," I began watching one Reality TV Car Show in particular, albeit not knowing they were actually re-broadcasting it.

The Show's called Graveyard Carz', since they deal only in resurrecting Vintage Automobiles, primarily Muscle Cars, albeit only Mopar variety - And I also somewhat  enjoy the lead Character, a Self Serving 70yr old male named  Mark Worman,, whom appears to be the Shop's Proprietor, along with the Head Cheese of said TV Show.

As the first episode I watched; Err well listened to in earnest revolved around an ultra rare
340cid V-8 "Three On-the-Tree" (3-Speed 1971 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible, with Mark claiming it was One of Only Eight cars ordered with the 3 Speed manual transmission.

Then the next few weeks following, albeit unknowingly the tail end of the current Season 10 were a retrospective upon the 1958 Christine tribute car they built for the 2019 SEMA Show, with the first All Aluminum 426 Hemi Crate motor given to them by Mopar churning out an Obnoxious 1,000Bhp in Supercharger guise! Which they called it Thee Hellephant...

This was Funny to Mwah, since the name Christine floated back up upon thoust Radar for another wonky, languishing No Fenders story about Car Movies currently on Ye Story Rotisserie...

and then when trying to figure out who that Mark Chap was, I was Bowled over in Bemusement upon learning that the show originates out of their shop located in Springfield, Oregon, just  a 90mins drive from Mwah, Momma Mia!

While I stumbled across the following article chronicling 13 of Graveyard Carz' Top Mopar Muscle Build Picks, which Y'all can check out in;

Vintage Rides
  • 1977 Porsche 924
  • 1969 Opel GT
  • 1972 Lancia Fulvia

Another Motor Trend TV show I've been enjoying whenever I'm able to run into it. Is called Wheeler Dealers, as I enjoy the cast members , primarily mechanic Ant Anstead, along with the lead role played by Mike Brewer.

Recently I decided to go on a Lazy Sunday afternoon's binge, and gorge Thyself upon three episodes back-to-back, having since discerned I was watching episodes from the 2018 season.

I chose to do so since I almost never indulge Thyself - And primarily due to Thee Uber' Soft Spot I have for the Porsche 924, specifically since 'Ol Pops', aka Tomas Senior once owned a pristine, brand new 1977 1/2 Silver 924, having previously regaled Y'all here on No Fenders with Ye following tome...

If the Opel GT's the car I think it is, which I believe my late Cousin owned one of? Then it's a pretty cool ride. And this was the Funniest episode of the three, since Mike Dryly noted how it's Brakes were Stopping in Another state! And then calmly noting he thought he'd Broken the unique swivel Bucket Headlamps mechanical Arm inside the Cockpit, OOPSADAISY!

Yet what I mostly enjoy about this TV Show is their constantly Digging Up automotive Gems in the Rough I've either not heard of before or forgotten.

Case in point was the Lancia Fulvia, which I'd never heard of before, which returned this Italian Auto Manufacturer to Glory with its winning pedigree in World Rallying. While I was surprised to learn it was the first Factory Racecar following the Company's withdrawal from Motorsports, most notably Formula 1 in 1955 - when it was Sold to FIAT.

And that immediately made me recall the long forgotten, and presumably unknown to many Lancia D50 Formula 1 chassis, which ultimately Il Commendatore, nee Enzo Ferrari utilized to win the F1 World Championship with El Maestro', aka Juan Manuel Fangio at the controls in 1956, in what became known simply as the Ferrari D50.

Also, the Fulvia was the predecessor to the car that most easily comes to Thy lips when hearing the word Lancia, as in the All conquering Lancia Stratos

The car featured on this recent (2018) episode of Wheeler Dealers, which was obtained from a Sonoma, CA Wrecking Yard for $9,500 was a 1972 Lancia Fulvia Series II with a tiny 1.3-litre V-4 lump', which later I learned was "Laid Down" to give it a lower profile.

And apparently this "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" isn't new to the TV Show, since they apparently poached a similar chassis a Decade earlier, which Y'all can check out in the "Teaser" video below.

Or Y'all might enjoy another  video I found on Youtube chronicling the Fulvia's Rallying History, which reached its Zenith by capturing the 1972 FIA International Championship For Manufacturers (ICFM) title, the precursor to today's FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) which commenced in '73. Although the Italian marque was running Thar Lancia Fulvia 1.6 Coupe HF in upgraded 1.6-litre guise, and Defeated it's FIAT Sibling's 124 Sport Spyder for this series final crown between 1970-72.

On a separate "Rally Stage," two prominent names, albeit presumably more contested this ICFM Series - Stand out to Mwah, with the late Ove Anderson and Gerard Larrousse competing as Rally Drivers, but that's a whole nother Wabbithole' for a different day...
