Paul Newman: Philanthropist, Movie Star and Human

As a Man of Many Faces, I’m most impressed with His tireless Philanthropic endeavours…

What do Y’all think of when you hear the name Paul Newman? Is it one, or many of his 58 movies Filmed over his 50 years Movie career?

For many years previously, I only drank Newman’s Own lemonade, for which I’m dually impressed that in the first 25 years of existence, Paul donated over $250 million dollars! And later bequeathed his share of the company, estimated at another $120 million. Reportedly, as of 2021 Newman’s Own has Donated over $570 million to Charity, Aye Karumba!

Not to mention his tireless, unselfish dedication to his Hole in The Wall Camps for Disadvantage Kids originally just with Cancer, before expanding the types of Illness’s qualifying deserving Children admittance to these amazingly therapeutic Camps!

For which now I feel a tad bit Sheepish knowing I once Mocked thee Big Unit’, aka Justin Wilson running his Newman Haas Lanigan Racing car with it’s sidepods adorned in Hole in The Wall Gang Camps livery! Since as much as I’m impressed with Newman’s Own amazing monetary contributions to Charity, I’m even more impressed now, after “reading,” Err listening to the Book Paul Newman: A Life a second time with the Hole in The Wall Gang Camps instead! Which was a Nod to the Desperados Gang in Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid movie.

As my favourite Quip from the entire book is the part about one of Paul Newman’s many unannounced visits to one of the Camps, presumably the original camp in nearby Ashford, Connecticut. As one of the Kids attending tugged upon Paul’s pant leg. Asking Him, Are you A movie Star? Yeah, I did a couple of movies. Were you in cool Hand Luke? Yes,

I did Cool Hand Luke. Boy, Movies sure make You look Young!

As Newman’s Mega Philanthropy efforts are how I wish to remember the Movie Star, Political Activist and Racecar Driver…

But I Don’t want Y’all to think I’ve Drunk Newman’s lemonade and that it was a Fairytale Celebrity life that Paul lived. As three major items in His life make it painfully aware that He was Human like All of us.

Newman was a life long Alcoholic, beginning his Drinking “Career” as early as High School? Not to mention Joking often that He’d majored in Drinking at College. And was notorious for having a beer in his hand in almost Any setting. Not surprisingly, Anhieser Busch was a longtime personal racing and race team sponsor with it’s Budweiser brand, which I believe also supplied Paul with All of the free Budweiser Beer He could Drink.

Whilst Paul’s most tragic moment of his entire life occurred on November 20, 1978.

On Sunday, November 19, 1978, Paul’s only son (and firstborn) Scott Newman spent the day watching the LA Rams with a friend, beginning by having a bunch of rum Drinks. As a Hollywood Stuntman and having crashed his motorcycle recently, Scott was in much pain. So a friend gave him some Valium’s. And then Scott went back to drinking rum.

Then later on, Scott took some more valium before contacting his Psychiatrist, who gave him a bottle of some different Pills. Making a long story short here, Scott continued mixing Drugs before calling it a night. And then Scott was pronounced Dead shortly after 1AM November 20, 1978 at Age 28.

And while Paul and his second wife Joanne Woodward enjoyed a long and presumably mostly Happy Half Century of Marriage. Paul probably regretted one of his Quips regarding Joanne, once telling one of the numerous Reporters always Hounding Him, regarding temptation: Why would I go out for Hamburger when I’ve got Steak at Home?

Yet apparently that’s exactly what befell Paul on the set of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Since the Book claims it was a well known secret what Paul and Nancy Bacon, a Hollywood Reporter were up to. With the Cast often joking that Paul Doesn’t go out for Hamburger, but Does Bacon! As the pair reportedly had an On Again, Off Again Affair for One and a Half years before Nancy finally ended it, claiming that Paul was Always Drunk.

As Nancy Bacon was either married, or partners with Don Wilson of the Tacoma, WA Instrumental Rock Band The Ventures, since I Don’t remember now. As the couple had a Daughter before they Split up.

As The Ventures biggest Hit Song was Walk, Don’t Run, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Charts, whilst I was unaware they were also responsible for the original Hawaii 5-Oh TV Show’s “Intro” song…

As Nancy would Tell All first in interviews and then later in a book that I believe was titled Stars in My Eyes, Stars in My Bed. While it’s worth noting that the Newman’s, i.e.; Paul and Joanne Never Disputed Nancy’s Accusations over Paul’s Infidelity. Instead Paul just recommitted himself even further to Joanne and they lived together for the rest of his life, quietly celebrating their 50th Anniversary the same year Paul Died.

Thus Paul Newman, Mega Movie Star was Human after All, just like the rest of us. But what impresses me most about the late Actor is when asked about His doing Philanthropy work. Newman told said Reporter, His Only problem  was with those Who didn’t!

Whilst I felt it Karmic, Apropos or Symbiotic that just after I’d finished reading the book the first time in February 2020, I came across Paul’s longtime neighbor, Friend, Fishing Buddy and Co-Founder of Newman’s Own. The Author A.E. Hotchner’s Obituary in The New York Times, who Died at the remarkable age of 102…

Alain De Cadenet: 1945-2022

As this Swashbuckler was an expert on Stamps, vintage Aircraft and Racing Cars…

Was listening to The Guardian via my NFB Newsline for The Blind’s telephone service last Tuesday evening and was surprised to Hear the Sports section say that former racer Alain De cadenet had died at Age 76. For which I was able to listen to the Whole story vs. the You Must Register Now to Keep Reading “firewall” version below…

As I only know Messer De Cadenet’s work as a Talking Head, er Presenter from the long ago Great Speed Channel Show Victory By Design, which De Cadenet Hosted, which I always thought was a Brilliant Show! Even if I found Alain to be somewhat Bombastic and slightly full of Himself. As I know I tired of His immense Self Inflating attitude later on other various Motor Racing Broadcasts. Most notably Me Thinks Speed’s coverage of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and 24 Heurs du Mans TV Broadcasts.

And whilst I was totally aware that De Cadenet had raced multiple times at Circuit de la Sarthe. As I believe the Obituary says He contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans 14 times. And also knew He’d raced aboard His own De CadenetSports Cars.

I didn’t know that He’d had famed Formula 1 Designer Gordon Murray “Pen” Him a racecar! Which apparently came about after Il Commendatore, nee Enzo Ferrari refused to sell Him one of His top flight racing Sports Cars!

As De Cadenet made His Le Mans Debut in 1971 behind the wheel of a Belgian entered Ferrari 512M, driving with just one good working Eye! His other having been injured in a motor race previously.

Then when Enzo wouldn’t sell Him a Ferrari for the ’72 event, He commissioned Murray with the backing of Duckham’s Motor Oil to turn a Brabham Formula 1 car into a two seater Le Mans Sports Prototype, which He ultimately finished 12th Overall with longtime co-Driver Chris Craft behind the Keyboard of their Duckham’s LM72 3.0 liter Cosworth DFV V-8 entry.

For 1975,De Cadenet acquired a Lola T380 Sports Car also powered by Ford’s ubiquitous cossie’ (Cosworth) DFV V-8(“Double four valves”) variant, which gave Alain His Best finish at Le Mans. When De Cadenet and Craft finished third Overall at the 1976 24 Heurs du Mans…

While I have to give De Cadenet His Due, since He raced in earnest, and enjoyed racing at such classic, challenging venues as the Mighty Spa, aka Spa Francorchamps and the Green Hella’, nee Nurburgring’s famed Nordschleif! Not to mention shocking the Sports Car fraternity by winning both  the 1980 1000km of Monza and Six Hours of Silverstone with Desire Wilson!

MOTO GP: Modern Day Crossover Riders

But How Successful will they be Behind a Steering Wheel?

Ran across this awhile ago when perusing Ye Intrawoods’  for some Le Mans fodder. As the article’s about Triple MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo switching to racing Cars, specifically in the Spaniard’s case, Porsche 911’s in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia series.

As Lorenzo joins two of His former MotoGP compatriots competing in Tintops’, nee Saloons now. Joining the likes of The Doctor’, aka Valentino Rossi in the GT World Challenge Europe series and Dani Pedrosa in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe series…

https://www.dailysportscar.com/2022/05/16/lorenzo-on-4-wheels.html

Although this two Wheels to four Wheels Crossover Ain’t Anything New! Since I long ago attempted chronicling here on No Fenders some of the major Names to make the switch, which arguably, John surtees is still the most famous example. Being the Only Grand Prix Motorcycle and Formula 1 World Champion! For which Y’all can check out below…

MOTO GP: The Forgotten Racing Series – Summer Silliness Strikes!

Can Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro Upset Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo?

Otay, by now it’s really, really  Old News! But I’ve just not been able to find a place to Slot in rotation-wise, or let some riveting No Fenders story let me Slip Back into the Drafting line, Botta Boom!

As I’ve missed the past several MotoGP races, having fallen Asleep during the latter stages of the Barcelona round that Fabio Quartararo won. Whilst I recall being far more excited and Awake over my newest Numero Uno Kneedragger “The Beast!” Enea Bastianini triumphing at Le Mans, where the entire partisan French Crowd was absolutely Gutted over Homeboy Quartararo’s Vanishing Act, Wee Wee!

Having missed the Mugello, Sachsenring and TT Assen rounds, it’s good Thar on Summer Holiday in order for me to attempt playing Ketsup!

Was absolutely Shocked when first Hearing the News that Suzuki announced it’s decision to Quit MotoGP at Season’s end, which word came out at the beginning of May, over the Jerez’s Spanish Grand Prix weekend, Me Thinks?

https://motomatters.com/analysis/2022/05/06/history_deep_dive_why_suzuki_s.html

As this left me ponderin’ where the two Suzuki riders would go? Which initially I speculated to myself that Joan Mir could possibly replace a fading Covi’, nee Andrea Doviziosoat the Satellite WithU RNF Yamaha Squad?

But this seemed not destined to happen once RNF announced it would become the new Aprilia Satellite Squad in 2023, leaving Yamaha with just it’s Factory Team next year.

The next major News was the announcement that thee Pinball Wizard’, aka Marc Marquez would be having another surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota following the Mugello round. As Marquez’s right Arm still hasn’t recovered fully after nearly two years and multiple surgery’s later! As Marquez is out indefinitely, and you have to wonder if He’ll ever be able to recover to His former Dominating Self again?

Whilst I also missed the surprise Pole Sitter being Rookie Fabio di Giannanto at Mugello. Since it’s just been announced that di Giannanto will be partnered by Marquez’s younger brother Alex Marquez at Gresini Racing next year. Making me wonder which of the other Ducati teams Bastianini will ride for next year? As I’ll have to guess it’ll be The Doctor’s VR46 Affair, but who knows, Eh?

Whilst it’s All but announced that Alex Rins will take over Alex Marquez’s vacated seat at LCR Honda, possibly partnered by Japanese Moto2 rider Ai Ogura? Who’s currently third Overall in Moto2.

And Joan Mir now seems set to replace Pol Espargaro as Marc Marquez’s teammate at Repsol Honda next year, with Espargaro linked to returning to KTM, albeit to the Tech 3 Satellite outfit next season. Which I’ve got Zero Clue if this is the Bulk of MotoGP’s silly Season news or not?

And MotoGP is on an extended Summer Break due to the fact that the planned Debut race at the Kymi Ring circuit in Finland has been postponed a further year due to track Safety concerns, along with it’s proximity to Russia’s special Military Operation in Ukraine. With MotoGP resuming action at Silverstone on August 7th.

As the reigning MotoGP World Champion, Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo leads Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro by 21 points, nearly a race win (25 points) ahead in the Championship: 172-151. With positions three thru five being All Ducati’s. With Werks’ rider Francesco Bagnaia being sandwiched between Pramac Racing’s Johann Zarco with 114 points, and Gresini Racing’s Enea Bastianini on 105. While Bagnaia has 106 points with nine rounds remaining.

Indy Cars Revolving Door continues Turning

“On the Road Again,” although the Crews Definitely Deserved a two weeks Break!

Where to begin, Eh? Having crossed the Mid Season Marker after Road America, and with just nine more races remaining, beginning with Mid Ohio. It’ll be over in a flash, before another Stupendous Offseason begins, Sigh!

Taking another week off following Mid Ohio, before a feverish four straight weeks Fury begins North of the Border in Toronto, returning to Canada for the first time in three Gory Years, Take Off Eh! Followed by Iowa’s Double Header, supporting RASSCAR’ at Mother Speedway’s Road Course and then the Music City in Nashville.

IndyCar then takes it’s final week off before it’s final three races, beginning at Gateway, followed by Portland and lastly laguna Seca in early September. In order to Finish the season before Football begins, BARF! As why is IndyCar so Afraid  of the NFL? I mean Hell, their ratings Don’t even scare RASSCAR!

Whilst I’ll try to put together some of my thoughts here, Hopefully not to random scatter.

At the beginning of the season, I wrote a No Fenders post about several IndyCar Engineering Changes, which unfortunately I Deleted by mistake. Part of thee Joy of being Blind! And trying to Hover over a under intensified word, Thanks Blooger! But I digress…

Obviously Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden’s new Engineer Eric Leichtle has worked out Ok! Since Newgarden’s was the only driver with multiple wins (3) prior to Mid Ohio. Even though He’ll lose His Chief Mechanic Travis Law when He moves over to Penske’s Porsche Sports Car Operation as Competition Director at season’s end.

And although ScottyMac’, aka Scott McLaughlin has somewhat faded, sliding down to Ninth Overall before Mid Ohio. Nonetheless, the pairing of the Kiwi’ with Ben Bretzman was a good move.

As McLaughlin’s season seemingly came unhinged after that Strategy Debacle to Pull His Qualifying time for the Indy 500 that saw Scott Drop 11 places from 15th to P26, Youch!

But the Kiwi’s season has emphatically gotten back “Ontrack” after scoring a decisive win at Mid Ohio! As McLaughlin becomes only the second driver to date to notch multiple wins, whilst Team Penske’s won six of the season’s first nine events…

While DJ WillyP’, aka Will Power Hangs stout with longtime Engineer David Faustino, now in their 12th season together. “Hoovering” Top 5 Points-wise, garnering more Attenzione for His Spat with Devlin DeFrancesco at Road America. As somehow I missed Power’s Cooldown Hip Checking on the Kuhnuck’ during the race…

Meanwhile moving Craig Hansen over to Felix Rosenqvist’s Arrow McLaren SP (AMSP) entry has done the trick for the Swede. Since Rosenqvist finished a career High fourth at Indianapolis, along with having four consecutive Top 10 finishes prior to Mid Ohio. All of which makes me wonder why Zak Brown and AMSP are being so vague abou Felix’s future with the team.

Since AMSP has announced signing Felix to a multi-year extension, but just Not knowing whether He’ll be in Indy Cars of part of their new Formula E team next year? Which All of this Media speculation made me initially feel Rosenqvist will be in Formula E next season. Although now it sounds like AMSP is having a Hard time finding a better caliber IndyCar Driver to replace the Swede with…

As it’s interesting how Zak Brown seems to have targeted several of the Cheepster’s (Chip Ganassi) Drivers, including Alex Palou and Scott Dixon, with Rosenqvist being a former Chip Ganassi Racing Driver.

As AMSP should be a fairly Stout entity next year with it’s three Fulltime entries of Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi and whoever the “Third Wheel” is?

As my Numero Uno IndyCar Driver Pato O’Wardd claimed the Pole position with Rosenqvist starting P4 at Mid Ohio. But it was definitely a weekend to Forget! Since first Felix’s engine went Kuh Blamoe on lap 9! No Fault of the Swede’s, who understandably was furious over finishing last! And then after leading the first 28 lpas from Pole, O’Wards engine began losing power before ultimately ending up “Dead Stick” at Pitlane’s exit, causing a late race Yellow Flag Caution! With the AMSP Duo finishing P27-24 respectively, Youch!

Meanwhile I’m looking forward to seeing how well Kyle Kirkwood does when switching back to Andretti Autosport next year as Rossi’s replacement. Making me wonder who’ll replace Kirkwood at A.J. foyt Enterprises.

Since even though it was only testing, meaning Not knowing what test programmes each driver/team was on? But it seems indicative of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s (RLLR) season when current Indy Lights driver Benjamin Pederson finished Ahead of RLLR during His maiden IndyCar test for Juncos Hollinger Racing (JHR) at Sebring’s Short Course the week prior to Mid Ohio!

As Pederson’s been “Imbedded” with the Foyt team this year, learning Al of the nuances of being an IndyCar Driver with the team while “Shadowing” Kirkwood. Making me wonder if it’s a foregone conclusion that Pederson winds up in the storied No. 14 next year?

Although I’d like to see JHR become a two car operation next year, and perhaps Pedersen could “Fill the bill” Here?

But perhaps Stefan Stork’ Wilson could fill JHR’s second seat alongside Callam Ilott? Since Wilson’s got Don Cusik’s backing, but Who knows, Eh?

While I Don’t See’ how Foyt will ever improve substantially with it’s constantly revolving Driver roster. As Foyt needs to find an impressive, promising Driver who can stay with the team long term.

Although All of the Paddock fodder during Mid Ohio surrounded whether or not Foyt’s third entry, the #11 for rookie Tatiana Calderon will be on the Grid at Toronto? Or if the No. 11’s Done for the year due to sponsor RokiT making late payments to Foyt. Not to mention, I hadn’t heard about their $35+ million owed to Team Willy’, aka Williams F1 Racing in Arbitration earlier this year, for Failing to Honour their 2019 Title Sponsorship commitment to Williams…

While the runaway Points leader in Indy Lights in Linus Lundqvist, who Hopes to be moving up to IndyCar next year with an expanded Dale Coyne/HDM Motorsports concern, with the Swede joining IndyCar’s “Odd Couple” of David Malukas and Takuma Sato in a three car combined effort.

As Pedersen is fighting for second  place Overall with Sting Ray robb, who He trailed by 13 points prior to Mid Ohio. As I just thought I’d mention Sting Ray since Nobody’s talking about Him, other than Davey Hamilton, who’s also from Idaho. But I digress…

And while I’d say that RLLR’s three drivers are currently Overrated, the only other team more Disappointing somewhat, since Gasp! It’s got my favourite Villain on it! As I’m Not at All surprised by Hulio’s mediocre performance this year. Even though Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) Had to keep Castroneves this year. But I am somewhat perplexed over Simon Pagenaud’s struggles since after all, MSR is technically Aligned with Andretti Autosport…

And I could Prattle on Ceaselessly Here, but Y’all get the Drift, Righto? Since I won’t bother piling on over other Back-markers, since even before reading about Lola’s Hoped for Resurrection, I had to remind myself. It’s Hard remembering that IndyCar, like All Motorsports is a Business first. And who Our Favourite Drivers and Villains are, is just part and parcel for Our Entertainment…

Mid Ohio Fireworks!

As Not sure Who’ll be Happier over Rossi leaving Mikey A’s Squad!

Prior to Sunday’s Mid Ohio IndyCar race, read an Racer’s Marshall Pruett article proclaiming that Andretti Autosport teammates Alexander Rossi and Romain Grosjean were’t the “Best of Friends!” For which All I can say Marshall’s words seemed Prophetic following Sunday’s race!

Since we All know that Alexander Rossi did Nothing to Endear Himself to Andretti teammates Devlin DeFrancesco  and Romain Grosjean! With DeFrancesco, Rossi and Grosjean finishing P17, 19 and 21st respectively.

As IndyCar Radio Network’s Pitlane Reporter Joel Sebastianelli reported during the latter stages of the race that Romain Grosjean was Swearing Explitives over His In Car radio at Michael Andretti imploring Him to Bleeping do something about Rossi! With the Hot Headed Frenchman Foaming at the Mouth saying repeatedly He was going to Punch Rossi! As Rossi had apparently Hip Checked Grosjean after the pair had been playing Argy Bargy and Bangin’ Wheels repeatedly before Grosjean got the worst of it and was forced Offtrack!

For which I know I spent part of the Broadcast Crying Crocodile Tears for Romain! Blubbering Poor Romy! As it kinda Sucks getting a taste of your Own Medicine, Eh? Since we All know that Graham Rahal won’t be feeling Sorry for You at All…

Have No idea what the incident between Rossi and DeFrancesco was, or when it happened? But I cannot feel Any Sympathy for DeFrancesco either, since the rookie Kuhnuck’s quickly gotten a reputation for being a bit of a Wildman and definitely a Hard Charger, who Doesn’t Play Nice Himself! Can Y’all say Texas Motor Speedway?

Whilst believe I read somewheres’ following the race that Rossi had also had a collision with Andretti Autosport teammate Colton Herta? But the Indianapolis Star’s short story on the Andretti Boyz’ antics claimed it was Grosjean that collided with Herta, which I tend more to believe. Since I tend to think that Herta and Rossi actually respect each other,  and at this point, Colton’s probably the only teammate He likes!

And like IndyCar Radio’s Mark Gravelly’ James and Davey Hamilton mused during the Broadcast. They’d both liked having been a Fly on the Wall in the Andretti Autosport Hauler team Debrief! As Mikey A’s certainly got His Hands Full, which I suppose it’s a good thing there’s a week off before Toronto. Although who knows what type of Fireworks will commence Up North Eh!

But then again, I Always can Hear myself recalling Rossi once saying long ago: “I’m Not Here to Make Friends!” When on the racetrack. And I’m sure He cannot wait to move onto Arrow McLaren SP! With somebody on the Broadcast opining how perhas Rossi’s Already Checked Out?

But I like Rossi, who’s a Fighter and races Hard, but I think “Cleanly” with those IndyCar Drivers He feels reciprocates, El Correctomundo?

Wickens Back in Winners Circle!

And may a Touring Cars Championship be a possibility now?

By now Y’all know that former IndyCar Driver Robert Wickens has just claimed His first motor racing victory in some five years at Watkins Glen. Where Wickens was competing in the IMSA Watkins Glen Six Hours Undercard Michelin Pilot Challenge race.

As Wickens who started third in the two Hours race aboard the #33 Brian Herta Autosport (BHA) Hyundai Elantra TCR racecar, drove His way to the lead before handing over to teammate Mark Wilkins with 57mins remaining. As Wilkins then Held off a late race charge by the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce of Tim Lewis, with thee Young Wicky’, nee Robert Wickens watching from His Wheelchair in Pitlane behind the Timing Stand.

And like All Racers, Wickens Hopes this is the first of many victories to come, even if now utilizing Hand Controls in a Touring Car while being paralyzed. As who knows how far Wickens will go?

As I still say it would be Awesome to see Wickens, His Best Friend thee Mayor ‘O Hinchtown, nee James Hinchcliffe and I Dunno? ‘Ol Sugar Ray Tracy’, aka Paul Tracy contest the 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD Pro Class, although No clue what Manufacturer they could drive for…

https://racer.com/2022/06/26/the-beginning-of-whats-going-to-come-wickens/

Update

Naturally, After I finished this story, things got Massively better for Robert Wickents. As His Wife Carly called and said their first Child was expected sooner than expected, like in 24 Hours!  So Wickens drove from Trois-Rivieres late Night “Back Home Again” to Indianapolis in order to be on Hand for the Birth of His Son Wesley. And then having not only missed Thursday’s Track Walk, but Qualifying too; for which the Qualifying Driver Starts the race. Wickens started Dead last on race morning with Zero laps in the Car, since the team’s determined it’s easier pulling Robby’ outta the car then trying to “Insert” Him during the Pit Stop! So Wickens summarily Hauled His #33 Hyundai Elantra TCR racecar up to third in class before handing over to teammate Mark Wilkins.

As Wilkens carved His way forward with the pair winning their second consecutive race in a week’s time! With the win Not only being Sweet for the pair ‘O Hosers’ winning Up Norht Eh! But also being only a couple of Hours from Wilkins Home city of Toronto. With His Wife and Children being on Hand to witness their win!
