Speedy U-turn?

So it’s funny how this is gnawing at Mwah, as I really wanna see Dragon Racing succeed; not only this Month of May, but overall... And thus I feel slightly compelled to let this bone lay buried; BUTT! Since I’ve seen so much SHIT on le Internetz continuously reminding us ‘bout ‘Ol PT’s (Paul Tracy) CRAPWAGON comment... Hey, have you ever heard a Nissan Infiniti powered G-Force chassis? As they DID sound like CRAPWAGONS! (NOT to mention the Indy Pro Series mobiles...)

Thus I find it ironic that the man filling Messer Chrome Horn’s shoes at Dragon this May is none other then ex-Formula 1 and RASSCAR driver Scott Speed who boldly proclaimed back in ’08 that the IRL was BORING and how he would NOT wish to simply circulate ‘round making left turns with the throttle simply pegged upon the floorboard...

As I certainly wish Speed, rookie teammate Ho-Pin Tung and the Dragon Boyz a positive I500 debut, I’m just a little annoyed by how everybody seems to be giving Scott a free pass upon his past negative comments – almost treating him like Juan ‘O the Golden Childs... IndyCarz Brash New savior; URGH!

Although I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge Kevin Lee for being the only person bold enough to call Speed out upon his past remarks during a recent Trackside interview... Although  Lee was pretty easy upon the Californian - claiming he didn’t have the exact comments in front of him – to which naturally,  Scotty ‘THE GOOSE Speed went into charm offensive by claiming he’s always been a huge fan ‘O the Speedway and its challenges... Yeah right Scotty; Yuhs better go back ‘N listen to your interview dude!

Räikkönen taking his Oomplats PickEmUp racing

In case Y’all haven’t heard... the KIMSTER, nee Kimi Räikkönen has apparently decided he misses his Old F1 Stompin’ pardner MAC Montoya... And thus hopes to join him shortly in the exalted world “O Taxi cabs, Err ‘RASSCAR... Most likely in 2012, perhaps?

And I haveda say I’m glad to learn that I’m not the only person who thought it was a bad April Fools joke  when I heard the news for the very first time, as none other then SPEED’s Bob Varsha had the exact same sentiments.

And I have to also say that the stories floating around the Newswires weren’t exactly complete either, as there were conflicting reports initially about who The Iceman would be driving for – with claims it would be a brand new team in conjunction with Foster Gilette, an heir of the famous Gilette gang that’s had a nasty habit of running professional sports franchises into the ground. Can you say Liverpool Football Club, Richard Petty Motorsports?

So I felt a little better after SPEED’s Ray Dunlap’s interview divulged recently that it never was a Gilette/Raikkonen ICE1-project and instead the Kimster will drive 3-races for Kyle Busch Motorsports, (KBM)  making his PickemUp truck debut this Saturday night alongside Kyle at Charlotte Motor Speedway (May 20th)  which Y’all can watch on SPEED...

And KImi’s other two ‘PickEmUp Truck races apparently will be run at Texas and Homestead, I believe.

It’ll be fun to see how the Kimster does against his ‘Ol Stompin’ Pardner “Nielsen Pickett” (Nelson Piquet Jr.) who’s contesting his first full NCWTS season for rival competitor Kevin Harvick’s powerhouse KHI organization, as Nielsen Ho just scored his career best finish to date at Nashville, with a runner-up finish ironically behind Kyle Busch, where another ex-Formula  1 driver named Massimiliano “Mad Max” Papis got done Turned ‘round – bringing out the nights final Yellow flag.

Meanwhile scuttlebutt suggests that Räikkönen is already looking past PickEmUp racin’ and wants to run some Doublewide, Err Nationwide Carz before goin’ Toe-to-Toe with MAC Montoya in the Big Leagues whenever his Rallying doesn’t interfere...

And on top of The Kimster’s impending move to RASSCAR, now comes word that Kimi’s countryman Mika Salo will join the N-CUP Partee...

Rossi leads the way in WSR – Sorta...

Former ART Grand Prix GP3 Standout, hopeful GP2 competitor and Formula One aspirant - American Alexander Rossi has apparently taken a different path towards the F1 limelight, having jumped to the World Series by Renault this year with  Fortec Motorsport as I was unaware that the Yank was leading the Championship going into Round-2 at Spa Francorchamps after having scored a win and runner-up finish during the first weekend’s competition at Motorland Aragon Park.

And I was also wondering where had “The Young Wicky,” a.k.a. Robert Wickens gone off too? As unknownst to Mwah, the former Formula 2 ‘KuhNuck Standout was actually on Pole for race one at Motorland – ultimately finishing runner-up to winner Rossi.

Ironically – Rossi & Wickens were teammates last year in GP3 before taking the step to their respective WSR teams, having split the first two weekend’s outings Facetime upon the top step of the podium...

And Wickens has his work cut out for him with Jean-Eric Vergne; NOT to be confused with Jean Karl Vernay, the reigning Indy Lights champion, who’s sadly missing from the ‘BigCarz, nee IndyCar currently... As Jean-Eric is another hopeful Red Bull Junior Driver Prodigy hoping to make it to the Big Leagues shortly – whilst being Wickens teammate at Carlin...

Meanwhile Rossi’s just sampled another Formula 1 racecar, this time a Team Lotus chassis upon the streets of Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur (early April) as part of his being appointed to the Team Lotus Driver Academy. (Driver Development Programme...)

Yet Rossi will face some stiff competition in WSR this year in the form of Wickens, Vergne and the other WSR ‘Boyz – and thus, since I don’t follow the World Series by Renault or know all of its current talent, perhaps? I can get Ryan of JOWT to do the Heavy Lifting and preview Rossi & Co’s, i.e.; Vernae, Wickens, etc impending ’Twenty-eleven WSR Championship battles, eh? Seeing how I’ve already missed Round’s 1-2; CRIKEYS! Although I do now know that Wickens won at Spa – so it appears the score is knotted 1-1 ‘KanaDuh vs. USA; Hya!

De Angelis – living in Senna’s shadow...

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of Elio de Angelis passing – as this Italian racing driver seemingly is overlooked, being Formula One’s latest fatality prior to Black Sunday – when Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna were killed and Rubens Barrichello almost joined them!

Yet for me personally, De Angelis death occurred before I became intimately acquainted with Formula One, as sadly I was completely unaware of his passing – with his death occurring just a scant five weeks prior to my introduction to the sport via television. As it was three Grand Prix’s after his death – plus a weekend on since Elio’s place at Brabham had been filled by Derrick Warwick, exactly one month after the Shameless tragedy, taking over the vacant seat in Montreal. As Elio’s death, not to mention his career seem somewhat overshadowed by his ex-teammate and rival Ayrton Senna da Silva – who usurped this “Gentleman Driver.”

And perhaps it’s just Mwah, but why does Senna get ALL of the ink? As another unsung hero to me – who was the first tragedy I was semi-conscious of the beastiality of those F1 LandSharks was Philippe Streiff, who like De Angelis was brutally injured in a testing accident, albeit Streiff was simply Paralyzed – if that’s a proper way to put it? But Streiff’s injury is another story for another day, eh?

I said Gentleman Driver because that’s always the way De Angelis came across as being described to me, especially being of wealthy Roma parents, a Shipping Magnate perhaps? As his father reportedly was a motorboat racer having amassed a large fortune from his construction concern...

Yet obviously De Angelis had talent, having finished runner-up to Didier Pironi in the Monaco F3 race, enroute to winning the Italian F3 title in his rookie campaign as a teenager.

Nevertheless, the young Italian was supposedly thought of nothing more then a Rich Kid buying his way into the Pinnacle of Motorsport when first arriving on the scene in 1979 believing he’d consummated a deal to drive with Uncle Chopper’s (Ken Tyrrell) squad – which apparently fell threw, as Elio’s father financed his move into F1 with Don Nichol’s Shadow Racing outfit instead. As I was unaware of De Angelis’s early court squabbles with first Tyrrell and then Shadow, as I tend to think of the Italian as just a Lotus and Brabham Gran Primo Piloto instead.

Interestingly Elio was teammate to three World Champions, beginning with Mario Andretti, followed by two future Champions: BLOODY ‘NIGE (Mansell) and the driver I previously took to calling ‘ARROGANT, nee Ayrton Senna... As Elio was not keen on being his Brazilian understudy’s number two, feeling Lotus was focusing upon Senna more favourably and hence, ironically replaced another Brazilian World Champion named Nelson Piquet at Brabham who had departed for the burgeoning Williams F1 team.

Also of note, De Angelis’s debutant Grand Prix victory at the Osterreichring in Austria in 1982 was the very final time that the F1 Circus witnessed Colin Chapman throw his beloved cap into the air signaling another Team Lotus victory...

As I seem to believe that the radical BT-55 which I’ve heard called several different names was designed by Brabham’s Chief Designer Gordon Murray, who’d go onto further success for some team based at Woking called McLaren International, while it appears that Elio’s death was the catalyst towards the Brabham team’s ultimate demise.

And from other small snippets I’ve learned that this affable Italian was a concert level Grand Pianist – having begun playing classical music at the tender age of eight before quitting after four years of lessons, which makes me think of a  certain current day German F1 driver under intense media scrutiny for alleged post race frivolities in Shanghai.

As alas, I suppose we’re somewhat lucky that only a handful of drivers have grievously been taken by the sport in the past quarter century, albeit Elio’s unnecessary death from a poorly attended testing shunt at Paul Ricard doesn’t make things better...

Mike Dodson
Cannot say I know a single BLOODY thing ‘bout this writer, who I’ve just run across whilst searching for any interviews with Elio... Thus having just read two (of his tribute websites possibly countless) interviews with the late Italian – trying to get some insight to a driver I know nothing about; hence it was interesting to read about how as a boy of 13 – he’d become transfixed by the BADDEST looking car on the grid in ’84, the stunning black & gold John Player Special (JPS) Lotus of Elio de Angelis... As I enjoy knowing this reaction is international as I too was taken initially a quarter of a century ago by the blindingly quick JPS Lotus with it’s driver wearing a blazing lemon yellow (Banco) Nacional Ndecal upon it...

Bernard & Co get a little Dirty!

Indiana State Fairgrounds Hoosier 100 “Promo-day” photographs courtesy of Tacey Woollard

This just in from Indiana Bureau Chief Danny B; who was Juan ‘O duh LUCKY WINNERS! To earn a very special ride aboard a most unique vehicle out at the Indiana State Fairgrounds; as its scary to think I camped out there nearly 10yrs ago for my very first outing to the Speedway for the ’01 USGP, but I digress...

You see – Danny was taking part in a “One-off” Radio contest to ride aboard a specially modified two-seater Dirt Car Thursday morning, with none less than Sprint Car legend Jack Hewitt behind the keyboard!

As I’m not a fan of Dirt racin’ or Ovals - hence, this is a world I know very little about, albeit apparently with ‘R’s coaxing, Mr. Bernard is trying to recapture Indy’s linkage with the USAC’ers and their Sprint Car devotees, i.e.; the Good ‘Ol Dazes when many of Indy’s Big Names came up thru the USAC Midget ranks.

Thus according to Danny; there was a veritable Who’s Who in the House, Err Fairgrounds, with NO less than SPEED & Versus’s OWR Curmudgeon Robin Miller, Randy Bernard, Bryan Clauson, Tomas Scheckter, Kenny Schrader and the aforementioned Messer Hewitt...

Reportedly the action began with USAC Road-to-Indy Scholarship winner Bryan Clauson taking Randy Bernard around the one-mile Dirt-track for a couple of Hot-laps before Tomas “Rockem-Sockem” Scheckter had  fun tryin’ to DARN BLOWN UP Schrader’s Dirt Modified’s tranny, reputedly being a ‘lil rusty upon his Upshifts – or perhaps he was just tryin’ to bed-in the late model’s Half shafts; Hya! As I’m told that Kenny Schrader was Smooth-as-Silk aboard his mount...

Then there was a very clever Photo Op session (besides the Miller-Bernard No Fenders T-shirt) consisting of Clauson driving the two-seater, Schrader in a late model Modified and Scheckter in thee Indy Racing Experience’s 2X-seater, which I didn’t think could run on dirt? As I wouldn’t want to be the lucky mechanics that get to clean her up, eh?

After all of the dignitaries and primping for photo shoots were done, as I’m guessing Mr. Bernard and ‘R most likely ran over to 16th & Georgetown for the days remainder of Indy Rookie orientation - it was time to get down to business, and do the deed; as Danny sez he asked Messer Hewitt to give it some ‘Wellie! As in I wanna go sideways; Yuhs hear Mr. Hewitt! To which I’m told Jack was more then happy to oblige giving said passengers the rides of a lifetime with three NASTY laps ‘round the Fairgrounds...

Thus, if you’re in town for the 500 and are looking for something a little different during the chock O’block Memorial Day weekend, then Y’all might wanna head out to the Indiana  State Fairgrounds Friday night May 27th for the Hoosier 100!

UPDATE
Apparently I was desperate for some latest ‘N greatest racing news, thus deciding to attempt listening to my very first Trackside with Kevin & Cavin Podcast of Friday night’s episode early Saturday morning... Hence I found it most ironic that none other then Tomas “Rockem-Sockem” Scheckter was one of the days two guests; Shuzzam! Making me feel like I was getting another dosage of ze KarmicWhip; as Kevin Lee no less asked Tomas ‘bout what he’d done the day prior out at the Indiana State Fairgrounds...

Scheckter noted how he’d gone for a ride in the two-seater Dirt Car with Jack Hewitt at the wheel and although he’d have enjoyed putting it thru its paces, he had to remain calm, cool & collected – reminding himself that Indy was his primary focus... Although Tomas reflected that the Dirt Modified was good fun with it’s 750bhp on tap.

And it was all vintage T-Schek on the interview, talking ‘bout his TWIT-ER battles, FrappaGer-ranimals, hitting little balls, Team Owners, being outspoken, etc. With the day’s first guest being the always enjoyable Mayor ‘O Hinchtown, a.k.a. James Hinchcliffe; as T-Schek’s interview is definitely worth checkin’ out on the May 13th Podcast which you can find by digging  ‘round 1070TheFan.com/Trackside/

The Other Chaves: Pedro – NOT Gabby...

Having recently scribbled ‘bout the virtually unknown Gabriel “Gabby” Chaves (who’s ironically taking to the Speedway for Indy Lights practice right now...) in my GP3 ‘Quickie; GP3: Sophomore season Kicks off... Shuzzam, Pow, Boink! As Eureka – whudda Yuhs knows, le Memorybankz has remembered another long lost Gran Primo Piloto’s soul... As in I knew I knew Pedro Chaves name from somewhere, as he had a very brief stay in F1.

Unfortunately the 1990 British F3000 Champion chose to attempt making his name with the ‘Uber uncompetitive and majorly underfunded Minnowesqe Coloni F1 Team in 1991. As Pedro was unable to drag the Coloni C4 by the scruff of its neck thru the dreaded Pre-qualifying regime that was de rigor that year – failing to qualify the Coloni 13-times before taking his Piggybank elsewhere’s...

Ironically, it would be none other then Pedro who stole Greg Moore’s thunder Up North Eh! During his final year in Indy Lights; his high-water mark during his three seasons under the tutelage of ‘KuhNuck Bryan Stewart, (1993-95) which is another story for another day...

As Chaves won his one and only Indy Lights  race on the streets of Vancouver, BC – around BC Place and False Creek; where I was just informed upon my Auckland-Los Angeles return flight leg by my adjoining row Mate, nonetheless a ‘Kuhnadiun Carpenter; NOT to be Cornfuzed with (Patrick) “Pat-the-Carpentier,” eh? Who told me that those DAMN F%%KING Condos built as the 2010 Winter Olympics Competitors Villas... Hence, wiping out the most enjoyable Vancouver BC IndyCar race – were basically unsold! And after numerous cost overruns and cutting corners were reputedly being marketed at up to 40% off... Way to go ‘KanaDuh! As first CART LOST this Molson Indy race and then Portland got the COLD shoulder from INDYCAR; Oh Never Mind!

But back to Pedro’s Indy Lights season, as reportedly he along with some Cat named Robbie Buhl were the only two drivers besides Moore to win a race during the 1995 season, as Greg thoroughly dominated the championship enroute to the title with 10-wins in twelve races before jumping up to Jerry Forsythe’s CART ‘BigBoyz team the following season.

Meanwhile Pedro has since retired from racing and is now currently managing his son David’s – NOT ‘Gabby’s career...

New Show + New Car = New Teeth Mashing...

OOH! AH! AIN’T IT PURDY???
In case Y’all haven’t heard the much ballyhooed New & Improved 2012 Body-by-Mennen AFX AeroKit Dallara chassis will be unveiled upon today’s Indy Open Wheel Weekly Show at 4PM New York/Indy/ET time on Versus.

The show is hosted by who’s commonly now known as just “R,” as in Robin Miller, with ‘LyndieCar Thaxton in duh middle with Sports Guy Suit ‘N Tie Kevin Lee...

Randy Bernard & Tony Cottman will be dropping by with that vaunted Dallara Safety Cell chassis replete with its Emperor’s first set ‘O clothes; final clothing optional and objects may appear closer then in mirror!

R will possibly Ham-it-Up with The Captain, whilst Scott “I LUV THE IRL” Speed is also set to be a guest, so check it out and see if Randy reminds ScottyBoy its INDYCAR BY GUMMIT; From Now On Yuhs Hear!

UPDATE
So I cannot comment upon the new concept cars presented – as in really, rear bumpers? What’s next, turn signal indicator’s?

But found it somewhat typical that Scott “WHOOPEE CUSHION” Speed would comment ‘bout Dario REO Speedwagon Franchitti’s hair, to which R quipped; that’s because he can get away with it son!
