Alexander Rossi: You've just won the Indy 500!

No Fenders Tomaso chats briefly with then Marussia F1 Reserve Driver Alexander Rossi at Will Buxton's Bigtime Bash at Austin during the 2014 USGP weekend. (The Tomaso Collection)
Part of me wishes I'd been videotaped laughing hysterically, Hyena voiced whilst screeching Are You FUCKING Kidding Me! As I swear I saw a white blurb 'O colour momentarily going by our trackside vantage point in the Turn 1-2 Short-chute going exceedingly S-L-O-W! Thinking he'd run outta gas on the race's final lap...

As I find I-T hugely funny how the media's warbled on' N on 'bout how most of America didn't know who the Californian Kid with the foreign sounding name was...

As I've not only surreptitiously followed his dreams of becoming a Formula 1 driver thru stints at two failed F1 teams, nee the various guises 'O Caterham and Marussia, but had the honour of meeting him in Austin, Texas circa 2014 when still a hopeful Marussia F1 test driver - before he finally was given his chance as a fledgling Formula 1 race driver for five races last year, culminating with his career best finish appropriately at the Circuit Of The Americas!

As it was a splendid surprise ending to a most entertaining and overly enjoyable race - as so many things could have gone wrong for Alexander, like stalling the car for starters, not to mention running out of ethanol if his Andretti Autosport team-mates hadn't been willing to tow him around in order to make the necessary mileage!

Which as The Eagles once crooned: "There's a New Kid in Town!" As Alexander Rossi is the first rookie driver to win since 2001...

Paging Passenger Hinchcliffe...

Hmm? I only know one person named Hinchcliffe, which I don't think is a common name, so can I-T be the one and Only?

Having arrived to my departing Aeroplane's gate at 6:30AM Tuesday morning, naturally I was a little blurry-eyed. Sitting in the waiting area the loudspeaker crackled to life somewheres' north 'O 7AM: Paging passenger Hinchcliffe. Please report to the podium with your passport; WTF?

Instantly behind my shoulder a bunch of waiting passengers warmly greeted the oncoming celebrity, with one saying: I had you in my Pool Sunday, to which Thy Mayor 'O Hinchtown quickly replied "I NEVER Bet upon Myself;" Hya! As Hinch' was quickly surrounded by several people. Can I get a picture of my daughter with you, your autograph, etc.

James was very accommodating, and I somewhat gamely tried  stumblin', fumblin' and most definitely bumblin' my way towards thee Mayor who was trying to oblige the female gate's "Desk Jockey's" request to present himself as he was surrounded by a small throng 'O well-wishers.

I tried saying his name twice to NO avail and decided to simply step back to my seat instead of stumbling into the mini-crowd surrounding him, to which a very Officious' man next to me who later-on sounded like a pilot asked me "Who's Dat?" It's James Hinchcliffe, a racing driver who was on Pole at this year's Indy 500, which he simply replied Oh?

HOLY KUHNADIUN' HEARTHROBS BATMAN!

So in a Yogi Berra Deja Voodoo all over again type 'O moment I mused to myself how amazing that Messer Hinchcliffe would be upon my "Puddle Jumper" flight to Detroit, thee Motor City, albeit I was momentarily Cornfuzed over why he'd need a passport to travel to Detroit, eh?

Forcing my way to the front of the Queue, after they'd called for persons needing assistance to step forward, I boarded the plane with white cane in hand  with said gate attendant escorting me down the Jet-way, before the flight's two female cabin attendants escorted me to my Row-11 aisle seat, while all the time I ARSE-Sumed that James would naturally be in first class...

Then as the plane filled up two men behind me kabitzed in foreign dialogue which to Mwah sounded Russian, giving me pause to vacillate that perhaps both Schmidt Peterson Motorsports drivers were on my flight?

Aka Mikhail Aleshin, who's now commonly referred to as thee Mad Russian...

The "small" Aeroplane with two rows of two seats abreast took off and I quickly drifted asleep for the entire 45mins duration...

Thus upon reaching the gate, I told the young lady sitting next to me in the window seat that I'd be waiting to deplane last, since I had to wait for assistance and to let me know when she wanted out. Ok thanks, how 'bout now as everybody was standing in the aisle doing the typical "Hurry Up 'N Wait" routine as I heard an instantly recognizable voice directly in front of Mwah, who'd apparently been sitting Kitty-corner from me on the aisle seat one row to my left.

Thus in the stillness of the waiting crowd, as the young lady was getting kinda pushy I asked: So did Conor ever give you your shoes back James? To which he simply replied Animal!

H-U-H?

And after a momentary "Pregnant-pause," a person in front of him asked, are you the person who wasn't wearing shoes at the Banquet? And  then somebody else broke in how they'd shown his shoes being passed around the table and some woman holding them up confusedly... Yeah, that was me James replied in a slight huff.

As the night before on local Indianapolis television, we'd watched the Indianapolis 500 Victory Banquet hosted by "the Voice," aka Dave Calabro at Carpets' Manor where Calabro had joked about Conor Daly needing to purchase black shoes for the evening, which turned into joking 'bout Conor not being able to afford shoes. As even rookie Max Chilton had joked during his acceptance speech how Conor had asked to borrow some hair gel for the evening...

And then my fifteen seconds of standing next to James was over in a flash as the young lady gently pushed me out of the way, causing me to mash my face upon the offending overhead stowage bin, skewing my glasses as I stepped back into my aisle.

Hearing Hinch' tell somebody he'd seen 241mph on his dashboard going into Turn-1 as I told Hinch' how enjoyable it had been watching him and Ryan Hunter-Reay repeatedly swap the lead during the start of the race! Which I think it was there he  said it was as fun as a Go Karting race.

Whilst I also heard him tell another passenger that they get so few days off - that obviously he was traveling Up North Eh! Hence the need for a passport, since Y'all can't just let anybody trek across Thy GURR-REAT White Northern Plains, right? Like Take Off Eh, Yuhs Hoser!

As another passenger asked how old are you? To which Hinchcliffe replied 29', and some quip 'bout looking older, or was it younger? Hya! As Thy Mayor 'O Hinchtown disembarked and vanished into the crowd.

Afterwards, as one of the flight attendants was walking me forwards to my awaiting wheelchair I mentioned how we'd had the Indy 500 Pole-sitter on our plane this morning and he'd sat right across from me.

Yeah, we were trying to figure out who he was, to which the second flight attendant behind me said he was in 10B when I said he'd been sitting in Row-10...

Belle Isle recollections...

Justin Wilson Autographed "Hero Card" collected at 2014 Sonoma IndyCar race. (The Tomaso Collection)
As Y'all may know, Belle Isle is French for Beautiful Island, for which after all, there's more than Juan' Mon Cherie...

My initial plan for this story in Thy Aftermath of thou Magnanimous 100th running of some Oval-track in Indianapolis; Sigh. As Y'all know the drill, right? Which means I'm running behind and current stories here in Nofendersville are nebulously stuck in that dastardly No Fenders Wormhole Vortex!

Especially since I'm currently enjoying a much needed few weeks sojourn away from Thy A-L-L consuming Confuzer, as I'll be off to thee other Florence shortly...

AnyHoo, I'd read; Err 'Whale listened to Erik Larson's Thunderstruck in CD Audiobook format early this March, the story about the Mad Hatter Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen almost escaping from London before being caught nearby Belle Isle in the summer of 1910.

Alas, as hard as I tried to make I-T thee Belle Isle of Michigan where the IndyCar circus is headed this weekend, nevertheless it more likely was the  other Belle Isle for which I was totally unawares' of, eh? Y'all know the one in Newfoundland and Labrador, right? Which makes perfect sense, since it's the shortest route across Thy Atlantic and the Great Lakes along Thy St Lawrence waterway; but I digress...

Hence, since I seem to gravitate towards the number three, and NOT because of 'Ol Ironhead, nee Dale Earnhardt; Hya! My three most poignant memories of the temporary street course, which I've never been overly impressed by, which seems notorious for lack of passing amongst other thingys are:

In 1997, my Homeboyz' outfit PacWest Racing Group, for which I've just recently scribbled labouriously about, nearly Broke their Proverbial Duck with ex-Formula 1 Pilote Mark Blundell coming up one solitary corner short of victory before running out of fuel in which he called his worst disappointment of his career!

As Blundell's team-mate known as B-I-G MO', aka Mauricio Gugelmin, also an ex-Formula 1 driver had also ran his tank dry when at the pointy end of the field ahead of Blundell & Co. As the late Greg Moore would sweep to an unexpected victory. As its weird knowing I watched the race on Thy Telescreen A-L-L those years ago - SCREAMING in Disbelief at both of the PacWest drivers misfortunes!

My other two memories relate to the fairly modern era of Indy Cars, albeit one's more to do with the racetrack's Ash-fault's demise, whilst the other regards a fallen racing Hero of mine.

There was that glorious day in '08 when Justin B-I-G UNIT' Wilson was rightly declared winner aboard his Newman Haas Lanigan Dallara-Honda, after 'HULIO had definitely BLOCKED him! As I'm fairly certain this was Newman Haas's final victory, as one of its namesakes, Paul Newman would pass away shortly thereafter, whilst Justin would record two further victories for Dale Coyne Racing before his untimely death at Pocono last summer.

Justin's team-mate then was a Weinerschnitzel named Graham Rahal who'd had the honours of winning for the team prior on his maiden IndyCar race at St Pete at the beginning of the season. As surely Graham, along with the rest of us really didn't believe it take another seven years to return to the podium's top step! Ironically having faltered to Wilson at Texas Motor Speedway NO less, in what was Justin's final IndyCar victory. Where a multi-times IndyCar champion sardonically offered to cut off one of his extremities after Wilson's win...

And lastly, there was the year that Thy Mayor 'O Hinchtown, nee James Hinchcliffe got snookered by a Snowball; Err Dinosaur sized Tar-ball when the track surface inexplicably broke up! Which resulted in a two-hour Red flag session, for which unbelievably I sat thru the entire Shemozzled, since I enjoyed the comedic relief 'Ol R, aka Robin Miller and crew provided whilst track workers furiously mixed 'N poured batches of "fix-It" quick drying concrete!

Otherwise, believe that 2012 race was a snoozer, for which Scotty the Iceman' Dixon won ahead of Wingman Dario REO Speedwagon Franchitti - who'd wisely not kept his previous surgical promise.

And suppose it's somewhat symbiotic that Penske Racing holds the record for most wins at seven and Helio Castroneves has the most wins with three, since after all, the race is El Capitano's Pet project.

Then again, I just thought of another Belle Isle Flashback, one A.J. Allmendinger will certainly wish to not be reminded of. When Roger Penske gave him a second chance after his mistake in 'RASSCAR as a Penske driver.

Y'all know when Roger put him in one of his Indy Cars after completing his rehabilitation and being reinstated by NASCAR. As thee Dinger' led at Indianapolis as a rookie before having a NIGHTMARISH weekend on thou Beautiful Island when carrying the races primary sponsor on his Dallara's flanks, i.e.; Quicken Loans; when A.J. wrecked not once, but both days Double Header Heat Races at the very beginning of each event!

As will Pageantry', nee Simon Pagenaud still be on his Hot-streak? Or will Graham Rahal find his way to the front of the Queue? Or will it be somebody else winning at Belle Isle, and can Conor Daly score his first IndyCar podium?

Although I'll not be privy to the races, nor most likely get to hear a race report since I'll be on thy merry way to Florence. And NO! Not the one in Italy! Where' I'll try remembering to ask our Good Friends to at least tell me the winners...
