The Flyin’ Hawaiian is Finally Grounded

As another legend of Indianapolis flames Out…

 

By now, Y’all have heard of Danny Ongais Death at Age 79. As Ongais passed away in Anaheim Hills, CA on February 26th.

 

I had the privilege of interacting with whom I called Mr. Interscope briefly nearly 14 years ago when making my trek to Mecca’, aka Mother Speedway to ride aboard the Indy Racing Experience’s 2X Seater.

 

Following my ride that Hot July summer day, totally on Cloud Nine after this fantastic experience, which Y’all can read another typically long winded No Fenders tome titled Brickyard Flyer below.

Naturally we entered the IMS flagroom in search of some refreshments, and I believe I also ordered lunch. Sitting there, my IMS Sherpa  Daniel Baines Cooper noticed Mr. Interscope who’d he’d seen the night before and tried striking up a conversation with Him at an opposite table. As Danny Ongais was sitting alone trying to eat lunch and really didn’t want to be bothered.

 

As I scribbled All those years ago, when Danny told Mr. Interscope I’d just ridden the two seater and He could have been my Chauffeur, Ongais curtly replied No Thanks! I’ll stick to Single Seaters!

 

Thus I came away thinking what a Gruff, Grumpy ‘Ol Man this legendous’ IndyCar Driver was. Which now makes me think of a recent post by another IndyCar blogger over how Aloof the Dude! Ryan Hunter-Reay treated her recently…

 

All of which makes me marvel over the book I’m re-reading about Paul Newman’s life, and how Newman said I Didn’t sign up to be people’s Friends! As there’s the Private Paul Newman and the public Mr. Newman.

 

Newman further noted how Distressing it was to Him to have countless people come up and continuously stare at His eyes! And when He resorted to wearing Dark Sunglasses, countless Fans would say Take them Off!

 

To which Paul described felt to Him like somebody coming up to a woman and saying Take off your Blouse, I wanna See your Tits!

 

To Mr. Ongais credit, He did answer All of my friend’s questions and was Never rude to us, simply wished to be left alone. Which I’d surmise is Anybody’s prerogative…

 

And instead of trying to recount All of Mr. Interscope’s accomplishments again, with winning the 1979 24 Hours of Daytona arguably his Biggest. Instead I’ll direct Y’all to my previous No Fenders yarn below.

The Tomaso Files: Soaked in Seattle, Tiny Bubbles abound...

Yeah, your Humble Scribe Tomaso's definitely Water-logged, especially since Seattle's in the midst of aiming towards 40 Days 'N Nights 'O Precipitation, albeit thou record from 1953 is only 33...

Ah, it's good to take a few Dazes away from Thy Keyboard, Whale' at least posting Somme-thun' on Ye BLOB', what Thy late Awntie Harriet Christened I-T; nee No Fenders, after enjoying the weekend listening to the Rolex 24, which naturally made me think of the recently departed Dan Gurney..


And if Y'all have been reading this Blob Fantastica! Since the beginning 'O year, then Yuhs know I went to California and All points in-between with Tacoma Bureau Chief Mary Ellen as Thy Chauffer in the Silkmobile with Pixie-the-Wonderdog WUF-WUF! And Silk - whose car it is; Hya!

As Silk, who many asked us if He's part Great Dane? And the more I talk 'bout him, I think of Marmaduke! Having likened Silk to Ah Snappin`' Turtle every time I tried eating various meals upon going thru the Drive-Thru, as he tried sticking his snout over my shoulder between the two front seats for a Wee Bitamyte 'O Cheeseburger; CRIKEYS!


As I was gonna lament Y'all how WET it's been since returning home from California. And the difficulties of trying to swing thou White Cane thru the Mud, Muck and Puddles! Not to mention Winds of 25mph, along with Homeowners too DAMN lazy to sweep off their sidewalks! But our inclement weather's causing Mud flows AIN'T Nothin' compared to California's, i.e.; specifically Montecito!

As it was a GURR-REAT! Trip beginning in Fresno, then heading Northwards to Seaside via Highway 1, which brought back ancient memories of the Hystericals' as Mary Ellen called out Pebble Beach's 17 Mile Drive, Monterey, etc.


After a night's stay in Seaside, it was back South to a place I'd obviously Prattled on 'N on 'N on 'bout over thou years... As Mary Ellen said, DON'T you wanna go to Big Sur?


Thus she found out how to access the private road to Pfeiffer Beach and it's magnificent "Window rock," which may or may not also be known as Keyhole Rock, Arch Rock or the Keyhole Arch Rock; Cornfuzed?

Reluctantly, we had to leave Big Sur before we wished too, as it was a long day's journey north again, this time crossing over the legendous' Golden Gate Bridge, naturally shrouded in fog! Then meandering over Mount Tamalpais, also shrouded in Fog, as this was the twistiest road I've ever been on! Creeping about since the main road's still washed out from a year ago - as we traversed the Stinson Beach Detour.

Finally arriving at our destination late Wednesday night, the HighlandsResort, where we enjoyed excellent Hospitality and the luxurious tranquility of secluded cabins nestled in-between the Redwoods along the Russian River!

Two days later, we Next stopped at a Park's name which was easy for me to remember, since my memory instantly recalled Kevin Doran of IMSA motor racing fame, whom I believe once campaigned those exquisite Ferrari 333SP's. As we stopped at
Doran Regional Park in order for Mwah to walk upon thou Beach, along with taking the Hoonds' for a stroll.

As Kevin Doran's CV at the 24 Hours of Daytona is Mega! Spending time with the late Al Holbert makes me believe he was involved with those legendary Porsche 962 Panzerwagons; Ja Volt! Not to mention his involvement with MOMO Ferrari and Doran Lista Racing, along with his Dallara Grand Am DP being victorious...   

This being on our way to Sebastopol, a city I'd never heard of or visited before, where we spent a further two nights along with frequent visits to the nearby Doggie Park and another Walkabout on "Kevin's" Beach

Then we went off in search of the Walgreen's in Santa Rosa, where Mary Ellen described the vast amounts of carnage from the Fires, noting how a whole Trailer Park community was Flattened! Along with a Gynormous pile 'O rubble in a parking lot, presumably the Costco Store that burned to the ground!

From Thar it was to Willits, CA, our most Dismal stop of the journey Northwards, before getting stuck in a deluge 'O rainfall in Crescent City, our last night's stay in California.

And somewhers' between The Redwoods and Crescent City, or Oregon whilst still on Highway 101, my mind began Ah-wonderin' about just where had the Carrera Panamericana ended Stateside?

As I find it very Apropos or ironic that I was in California, Dan Gurney's adopted home state when he died. Although I'd be totally unawares' of this until returning home a week after his passing. For which I'll defer Y'all to a slightly different take upon this, since mine hasn't been started.


Or even more Karmic since when I think of Dan Gurney, I tend to recall my lone meeting with him nearly two decades ago at Pacific Raceways, where the Star of the Show for Mwah was the ultra unique Ferrari 375MM racecar that Phil Hill and Richie Ginther co-drove in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana road race.

Thus, per tipicali, Al gore's wondrous invention Zed Internetz' was being Persnickety to Mwah! When all I could find upon my initial inquiry was that the Carrera Panamericana was devised by the Mexican Government to publicize the completion of its portion of the Pan American Highway, ultimately linking Alaska, Canada and the Good 'Ol U.S. to Mexico 'N beyond.

As I pondered out loud to Mary Ellen, which Highway did it connect upon? Since today's modern Automobile travel partakes Interstate I-5. Yet this replaced Highway 99, which ran north to Blaine, WA; Washington's Canadian Border, and ended south at Calexico, CA between 1926-1972.

Alas, surely this was the route's endpoint on our side of thou Rio Grande, Ci? Especially since the Carrera Panamericana ran for five years between 1950-54 before being cancelled due to its extreme danger and High Death Rate!

Yet if I'd let Lucy', My ARSE-STEAMED' Screen Reader read a 'lil further, I'd have learned that the first Carrera Panamericana race starting on May 5, 1950.,

Running North to South, began at Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, "On the Border" of nearby El Paso, Texas, to Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chiapas, at the Guatemalan border.


And then crossing into Oregon via Brookings, this naturally made me think of the Brookings Institute, before we made our way to thee "Other Florence" to visit our good friends, albeit just a brief Pit stop before a brief walk upon the beach and then to our night's destination Lincoln City.

As we just had to stay Thar, especially since I've been to the monument on the B-I-G' Island, aka Hawaii to Captain Cook's Obelisk monument. As we stayed at the Captain Cook Inn. As the room was slightly funky, but I enjoyed it's unique charm replete with wicker furniture which made me think of Hawaii.

Then after getting my wish to trek down the trail to Smuggler's Cove at Oswald West, albeit in Gale Force Winds R' Matey! We made it back to the car Justin-time' before the skies opened up! As the rain just increased the rest of the way home, including driving over the Astoria bridge,.

Although not bothering to stop at Fort Astoria, for which I've got an infinity for due to its mystical connection to the Astor Cup, for which I've prattled on 'bout before.

Whilst upon returning home a Fortnight later, after some approximately 1,800 miles by car and telling Mary Ellen I felt tired, to which she replied, you should be exhausted!

Yet being somewhat "Sleepless in Seattle," naturally I Dialed-up my Newsline for The Blind telephone service, and once again; SHUHZAMM! I found myself swimming in the Seas 'O Synchronicity...

Becoming totally engrossed in an overly long, but fascinating Vanity Fair article about a young German man named Oskar Speck, who ultimately paddled 30,000 miles over seven years from the Danube River in Germany to Australia!

Arriving just days after Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, and dually being incarcerated and spending a further six years Down Under in Internment Camps before being released after the end of World War II...

The Tomaso Files: Power Boats, Mercs', PM's and places Far Away...

As the tranquil sounds 'O sizzlin' hot rain Ah-splashin' down upon Kona's Disappearing Sands lava encrusted shores tinkle Thy Ivory's... What better way to launch into this riveting No Fenders tome whilst Opinin' on "Island time," eh?

This past December thru early January, I listened to another CD Audiobook at my typical Snail's pace, since once again I've let No Fenders rule Thy life; URGH!

Alas, thoust Herculean task was thoust taken uponst
Thyself in some contorted way to keep Thy Audience amused. Whilst I' was off 'N away playing on the B-I-G' Island, albeit Thy tank Done Ran Dry a few weeks out before departing. And hopefully that great 'Ol White Leviathan won't ram me in thou Pacific Ocean!

Thus I found it most Apropos that although I'd selected the author, Bill Bryson, who's travel tomes are quite enjoyable, I-T was either karma or just sheer luck that my friendly librarian reserved In A Sunburned Country for Mwah. Which is Bryson's travel-log upon his Walkabout Down Under, published in Y2k; (2000) Aye Karumba!

As naturally I'd had Australia Mates! Upon thou noggin', since Somme-thuns' just occurred Down Under in Bloody Melbourne, albeit I'd be coming home one day late, and obviously several dollars short; Botta-Boom!

Having chosen to leave a day after ST Pete's IndyCar season opener, in order to view; Err listen to I-T on Thy Telie' since there's perceivably more than two Silver Cars; Err Red 'N White joustin' for victory Stateside.

Although I was mildly worried that Scotty Somonex' Goodyear would put me to sleep & I'd miss my flight; Hya! Then again, the IndyCar broadcast times are typically far MORE palatable then Formula One's abysmal Oh F%%KING DARK 30 here on the West Coast...

Alas, I believe Bryson starts off the book in typical dramatic fashion by wryly musing that Australia's the land where their Prime Minister simply went for a Walkabout and swim in the nearby "surf," only never to be seen again!

As the man in Questione, who I'd never heard of before was the late Harold Hunt, Australia's Prime Minister between 1966-67, before simply vanishing in the waters of Cheviot Beach, on the coast of Victoria nearly a half century ago!

Hey! What's 'Ol Golden Child doin' racin' about Melbourne's Sydney Harbour underneath the famed "Coathanger?"

 And shouldn't Lewis Hamilton be busy piloting a Silver Arrows round Bloody Albert Park instead of a Magneto Green machine; Err Green Hella Magno paint scheme Powerboat! Underneath the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.


As Don't know 'bout Y'all, but I had ZERO clue that Mercedes collabourates in the sport of Power Boat racing, primarily those ultra sleek, speedy and blindingly fast Cigarette boats!

As AMG has just celebrated its tenth anniversary of said collabouration by producing the aforementioned Marauder, partnered by the current spec AMG GTR and corresponding AMG automotive products over the past ten years. Although  the Marauder's nearly 3,300bhp is a tad bit higher than current AMG automobiles!

And whenever I think 'bout Power Boat racing retrospectively, naturally I Flashback to the late Didier Pironi, who contested 70 Grands Prix for Tyrrell, Ligier and Ferrari between 1978-82, before his Mega' Shunt which effectively forced his retirement from Formula 1.

Although I know about Pironi's death from a "Rogue Wave" from a passerby Tanker during his fatal boat race, I've never heard or read anything 'bout the other two passengers aboard; Jean-Claude Guénard and journalist Bernard Giroux.

Whilst as typical, Grizzled Journo' Joe Saward has expounded upon the presumably forgotten Monsieur Guénard, and 'Ol friend of Pironi's, fellow racer and le Reggie's' (Renault) original Formula 1 project leader - in one of his nearly 100 Fascinating F1 Facts he's been sharing with us this year.


Meanwhile, naturally Didier's name always triggers the death of his Ferrari team-mate, the legendous' Gilles Villeneuve, for which I've scribbled the previous tome about the late Quebecer...

As once again, symbiotically, the islands of Hawaii and Australia clash, or perhaps more appropriately are intertwined for Mwah, As Bryson pontificates 'bout how if Bloody 'Ol Captain Cook hadn't discovered Australia, and proclaimed it to henceforth be under the rule of the British Empire, and more importantly the Bloody Queen! Then Australia could have very much have fallen into the hands of the French Wee Wee!

Interestingly, reportedly on Captain James Cook's third and final Pacific Ocean voyage, he narrowly missed our Straits of Juan de Fuca, and laid anchor at nearby Vancouver Island en route to Hawaii, where he ultimately met his death in 1779 after attempting to kidnap the local Hawaiian's chief to rest control favourably towards his expeditionary force...


As I look forward to another visit to nearby Kealakekua Bay
which I visited as a wee lad' before the Ocean wiped the road to I-T out! Having just viewed it from above a few years ago now.

As perhaps I'll get to go via boat tour to Captain Cook's monument on thou Big Island...
