Frightening, Honourary DL500 Crew Members

Tear-off Man Tomaso and Crew Chief Hang 10’ Hilo eagerly awaiting to spring into action, Err Supper-time. (The Tomaso collection)

No, DL doesn’t stand for Disney Land! Nor Dairy Land, Y’all!

Guessing I first heard David Land some two years ago, when He was a guest on IndyCar Radio during a Month ‘O May practice day. Wondering who is this Dude?

Then early last year, or was it before that? Geo. Phillips of Oilpressure fame mentioned Him and had a link to one of His Youtube videos, which I gave a try.

Really not sure how long I’ve been casually “following” David Land. But this year, I’ve become a regular visitor to His Youtube channel.

David Land’s Youtube channel

Or here’s a recent, 20 minutes interview with the legendous’ Jacky Ickx. The original “Mr. Le Mans”, after winning six-times…

VIDEO: Jacky Ickx discusses racing and life at COTA

This May, during His daily videos. I heard Him mention multiple times about people wearing His T-Shirts and how you could get them at the Gutswear trailer.

Thus, in a very small way. As I like to think that He gets part of the proceeds? I ordered my very own white David Land IndyCar T-shirt. And then corralled Hang 10’ Hilo for another picture, Yawn!

“Trick or Treat, Smell my Feet, Give me something to eat!”

RETRO: A Brief look at Bob Gliddens legendary NHRA career

One of Drag racing’s All-time Greats!

Bob Glidden was born in Whiteland, Indiana on August 18, 1944. He worked as a mechanic for Ed Martin ford in Anderson, Indiana, who later would sponsor Him.

Glidden began drag racing in the 1960’s with a Ford 427cid V-8 Fairlane, before switching to a 428 Cobra Jet Mustang in 1968.

Beginning in the Stock class, Glidden moved up to Super stock, winning frequently before turning Pro in 1972. Selling His Super Stock Mustangs in order to purchase a Pro Stoc Pinto from Jack Roush and Wayne Gapp.

He quit His mechanic’s job at Ed Martin ford in order to tur Pro fulltime, and finished second in His debutante Pro Stock race in the 1972 final Supernationals.

Glidden scored His maiden National Pro Stock victory at the 1973 U.S. Nationals. With His ford Pinto scorching the track with a 9.03 seconds pass. With a record 152.54mph as the No. 1 qualifier., defeating Gapp in the finals.

For 1974, bob won a further three events, including the Springnationals and His second U.S. Nationals, along with a Division 3 event. As both Divisionals and National events were part of the series.

Setting a new elapsed time record at bowling Green, Kentucky and earning 400 bonus points. Along with defeating Gapp again in the U.S. Nationals, allowed Glidden to “power” past Gapp and Wally booth for that season’s championship!

In 1975 during a mid-season slump, Glidden reacquired His 1974 Pinto and ultimately won seven NHRA events enroute to His second straight Winston title.

A Fan’s street-legal tribute to the most famous Pro Stock Pinto

1976 was an off-year for Glidden, finishing sixth overall, followed by second in 1977 behind don Nicholson.

For 1978, Glidden began the season with wins in the Winter Nationals and Cajun Nationals aboard his Pinto. Bob then transitioned to a Ford Fairmont, which He went undefeated in. With five consecutive races at season’s end.

Glidden claimed his third Pro Stock championship that year, and his seven wins tied the legend us’ snake, aka don Prudhomme for most Nationals wins that year.

His seven wins broke the previous Pro Stock single season record of six wins by Bill Jenkins.

1979 would be the only year that Bob won a Pro Stock National Championship in a vehicle other than Ford. Utilizing a Plymouth Arrow to claim His fourth Winston Pro Stock crown.

Having retired His undefeated Fairmont, Glidden went on a tear in His Arrow. Winning the season opener winter Nationals, and going undefeated for 14 races and 50 rounds! With the streak ending in June in Denver. Winning another seven National events that season.

His 1980 NHRA campaign would be His most difficult, capturing an unlikely third consecutive Pro Stock title at season’s end vs. the dominant Lee shepherd in a Chevrolet Camaro.

Glidden’s corporate backer Chrysler filed for Bankruptcy, forcing Glidden to race on His own “Dime”. And by round three, had parked the Arrow for a uncompetitive 1980 Ford Fairmont.

Switching to an unconventional big block motor, the tide slowly turned in Glidden’s favour. With fellow competitors nicknaming Him Mad dog that season!

Yet Glidden trailed Shepherd by 250 points entering the season ending World Finals at Ontario, California. With Sheppard simply needing to win round two to clinch His first Pro Stock Championship.

Shepherd broke a transmission in Round-2. While Glidden went onto set fastest ET and win the finals from pole position to win His fifth career Pro Stock title.

Bob Glidden’s Unlikely Championship defines making of a legend

Glidden entered one last season in 1981 with His Boss 429 derived big block V-8 Fairmont.

Then at ford’s urging, Glidden endured a miserable 1982 season in a short wheelbase Ford EXP which was designed for a 351 Cleveland V-8 small block, before NHRA changed its rules to a straight 500 cubic inch displacement, catching Glidden unprepared.

Bob claimed that stuffing the big block in the EXP made it the worst car He ever raced! Although managing to win once aboard this unloved racecar. As Shepherd would reel-off four consecutive Pro Stock titles between 1981-84.

Going 500 – Early days of 500-inch Pro Stock

1983 saw Ford, Glidden and Ricky Smith debut the new Thunderbird, and the rest as they say is history…

Glidden won the first of five consecutive Pro Stock titles in 1985, claiming five wins enroute to His sixth Pro Stock crown.

1986 started off slowly, before winning six of the final seven races. Then in 1987, a further eight victories followed, including His 60th “Wally!”

Glidden qualified No. 1 for all 14 races, made the finals 10 times and won 42 rounds! Along with winning five straight races at season’s end.

He retired His championship winning Ford thunderbird after 19 Pro Stock wins. And won His fourth straight title aboard a Ford Probe, which I believe He campaigned until His retirement in 1997.

Glidden won nine times in 1989, enroute to His tenth and final Pro Stock Championship, winning 49 times during the 1980’s.

By His standards, Glidden won a paltry seven times between 1990-93, with His 85th and final victory coming in 1995 at the Mopar Nationals in Englishtown, NJ.

Glidden missed the majority of the ’95 season due to having six-bypass Open Heart surgery during the off season and retired in 1997 after two races.

Glidden attempted to contest the 1998 U.S. Nationals, a race He’d won nine times, but failed to qualify. Bob then worked on programs for Ford along with being a Crew Chief for multiple Pro Stock teams.

Glidden was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1994. Ranked No. 4of the NHRA’s Top-50 drivers in 2001. And inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2005.

Bob and wife Etta had two sons, Rusty and Buddy. With Rusty also racing NHRA Pro Stock, even defeating His father once in 1996. Before Glidden died at age 73 on December 17, 2017, having been diagnosed with cancer the previous year…

Whiteland celebrates Bob Glidden wit Roundabout tribute

Three bob Glidden Pro Stock Drag-cars race towards the sky. (The Tomaso Collection)

Thanks to No Fenders Offical’ photographer Carpets’, I learned about this Bitchin’ roundabout dedicated to the town’s very own Bad Arse NHRA Hall of Famer Bob Glidden. With the dedication appropriately occurring on what would have been Glidden’s 82nd birthday, this past august 18th.

This awesome roundabout installation features three curved poles arcing upwards. With three of Glidden’s past Pro Stock racecars racing skywards!

The top car; either white or a “light” colour is His Ford Fairmont that Glidden went undefeated in during the 1978-79 season!

The middle red car is one of His Pro Stock Championship winning ford Thunderbirds. Representing Glidden being the first driver to score 50 NHRA victories.

And the bottom racecar is His career ending Ford Probe in Glidden’s iconic Motorcraft livery. The car He became the first to win 75 NHRA victories in!

The three “realistic” racecars replete with sponsor Deckles’, etc. Are quarter scale replicas created from 5/16-ich water jet cut metal, with graphic wraps applied. They May also include trailing parachutes? And the words Bob Glidden, NHRA Champ and Whiteland’s Own appear below them.

Whiteland, Ind., celebrates Hometown legend Glidden with Roundabout tribute

The artistic, roundabout sculpture installation was created by Indiana’s local bo-mar Industries.

On the top of the 30-40-foot-tall roundabout sculpture installation is a working, functional Pro Stock style NHRA Christmas tree. With the lights going thru various staging sequences until ultimately one side finishes with a red light.

Very cool that this was unveiled just prior to this year’s NHRA’s U.S. Nationals! And if you’re ever in Whiteland, its worth a visit Me Thinks.

Kudos to Carpets for the pictures! And keeping me abreast of new developments in the Indianapolis area…

Glidden gets A Sign!

Do You Know the Way to Whiteland? (The Tomaso Collection)

The city of Whiteland, Indiana has honoured its most famous Drag racer, 10-times Pro Stock Champion Bob Glidden with His own street. Which I believe is nearby the newly unveiled Roundabout sculpture.

As Glidden currently ranks third overall in NHRA Pro Stock wins, behind Greg Anderson and Warren Johnson. And fifth overall in “Wally’s”, ergo NHRA career wins.

Where are They Now: 5th Annual EuroNifStar trophy winner Lost edition

As that sure was a long, long time ago…

Author’s Note

Yeah, once again, I've neglected unveiling the winner in a timely fashion, which was definitely compounded by the Nightmarish winDOUGHS 10 Operating Ha-Ha, not! Confuzer' system I was attempting to Upgrade to since Gory February, 2020. Lasting thru October that year before my new Confuzer was functional. When this story got high-centered in the driftwood and totally forgotten.

Thus, turning 20 years old this September, I thought I’d celebrate with a few stories languishing in Thy cavernous No Fenders story vault…

Championships

2005 EasyKart National championship; 2006 Rotax Junior division Columbia Kart Championship; 2008 Snap-On-Stars of Karting JICA Eastern Division and IAME International Challenge Series; 2010 columbian Rotax Championship.

Tatiana Calderon Moguera has most definitely been a Femme Fatale Trailblazer, setting multiple “firsts” as a female racing driver.

She first took to the steering wheel at the precocious age of four, sitting on Her Papa’s lap driving the family vehicle on the streets of Bogota.

After trying football, (soccer) tennis and horse riding, she settled upon motor racing at age nine. Before deciding she might be able to make a racing career at age ten.

Now being over six years ago when I made this choice, I really cannot remember what my reason was? Assumedly after having become a Sauber F1 test driver…

After Tatiana began winning Kartin races, Boys began ramming Her frequently with no effect! Goin on to become the first female to win a Columbian national Karting championship in 2005.

In 2006 She was third in the Stars of Karting ESTE Division, won the Rotax Junior Division Columbian Cup and finished runner-up in the EasyKart National Championship.

In 2008 She became the first woman to win the Snap-on Stars of Karting Divisional Championship and the IAME International Challenge Series. Her Snap-On Karting title making Her the first female winner of a national American Karting series.

At age 14, She raced Her first car, a Kia Picanto with Her older sister Paula. The made Her Sports Car debut in 2009 in Radical cup. Finishing Vice Champion (runner-up) with one win, ten podiums in that year’s European Master series – SR5. Then graduated to single seaters at age 17, competing in Star Mazda for Juncos Racing; finishing 10th overall.

Calderon remained in Star Mazda for 2011 with Juncos. Scoring two third place finishes at Barber Motorsports Park and Canadian tire Motorsports Park made Tatiana the first female to stand atop the podium in Star Mazda. She finished sixth overall, before moving onto the European F3 Open Championship.

One aspect of Tatiana’s that I thoroughly enjoyed was Her choosing the GP3 Series for 2016 over the World Series by Renault Formula V8 3.5 series because the GP3 cars were faster!

Tatiana Calderon Opens Up about Her Career, challenges and the future of Women in Motorsports

Calderon was introduced to Sauber F1 team principal Monisha Kaltenborn in late 2016, and began working as a Sauber development driver. The following year She drove a Sauber C37 during a promotional day outing at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. And a 2013 Sauber C32 during a two-day test outing at Fiorano as part of Her Sauber test driver duties.

Tatiana graduated to formula 2 for 2019 and became the series first female racer, driving for BWT Arden. In the Baku Feature race, Calderon became the first woman in series history to lead a lap.

With Arden being purchased by HWA            for 2020 and choosing different drivers, Tatiana moved onto the Super Formula championship with Drago Corse. Which I’ll admit I didn’t pay Attenzione to.

Calderon joined Katherin Legge and Cristina Nielsen’s brand-new full season 100% Femme Fatales effort under the Girls Empowered Around Racing (GEAR) Banner. With Calderon and Rahel Frey co-driving the No. 19 GEAR Racing Lamborghini     GT3 in the 2020 Rolex 24.

Calderon also contested that year’s European Le Mans Series (ELMS) in another all-female LMP2 Richard Mille Racing entry with Sophia Florsch.

I also noticed Tatiana’s name when doing my ritual 24 Heurs du Mans preview tat September, being moved due to COVID-19.

As Calderon and Florsch were joined by Beitske Visser Richard Mille Racing Oreca, with the Le Femmes trio finishing ninth in the LMP2 class and 13th overall.

In 2021, Tatiana tested Sebastien Bourdais’s A.J. Foyt Enterprises IndyCar at Mid-Ohio, and impressed the team during Her 87-lap outing.

Calderon was announced as the team’s No. 11 Twisties’ “specialist” for the 2022 season. Sharing the ride with J.R. Hildebrand on the Ovals, before Her ROCKiT sponsorship failed to show-up during Her rookie IndyCar campaign. Bringing an unceremonious end to Her seven race IndyCar career!

MP1295: Catching Up with Tatiana Calderon

Lastly, I notice Calderon’s name as part of Gradient Racing’s 2024 IMSA GTD Michelin Endurance Cup (five rounds) No. 66 Acura NSX GT3 Evo22 entry. Teaming once again with Legge, along with Sheena Monk and Stevan McAleer.

Having just learned that Tatiana now races in NASCAR Brasila for SG28 Racing, driving a Ford Mustang. As I had zero clue about a NASCAR Brasil racing series.

Tatiana has worked with the likes of Derek Daly, Andy Soucek, Emilio de Villota, Monisha Kaltenborn, Anthony Davidson and Susie Wolff during Her racing career. Having shown great potential to compete in all disciplines of motor racing, she simply hasn’t had the desired results perhaps expected from Her?

With Her career best Open wheel Racing results being runner-up to Pietro Fittipaldi in the 2015-16 MRF Challenge Formula 2000 Championship; claiming one win at the Dubai Autodrome.

WINNER

Kyle Kirkwood (Age: 28)

Born: October 19, 1998

Birthplace: Jupiter, Florida

2018 Results

Truly Kirkwood’s breakout year! Won 15 of 17 F3 Americas races and 12 of 14 U.S. F2000 National Championship races!

Post 2018 Results

2019 Indy Pro 2000 Championship, won 9 of 16 races. 2021 Indy Lights championship, won 10 of 20 races. Winner of 2022 Petit Le Mans and 2024 Sebring 12 Hours GTD Pro category. 2022-2026 IndyCar Series, winner of 7 races, 12 podiums and 4 pole positions.

Championships

2017 Formula 4 United States Championship, 2018 F3 (Formula Regional) Americas Championship, 2018 U.S. F2000 National Championship, 2019 Indy Pro 2000 Championship, 2021 Indy Lights championship

The driver that Marshall Pruett likes calling Kirk Kirkwood, (Kyle) first came onto my radar Wayback’ in Gory 2018, when tying J.R. Hildebrand's U.S. F2000 National Championship record of 12 Wins in a Season.

Then still a teenager at age 19, Kirkwood would also win that year’s lesser known F3 Americas Championship along with His U.S. f2000 National championship title. Firmly advancing to Indy Pro 2000 for 2019.

Like most current Open Wheel Racing drivers, Kirkwood began racing in Karts and won multiple championships before graduating to single seaters in 2015.

One could say His rise through the ranks was meteoric. After His debut in F1600. Kirkwood went onto win five straight championships in-a-row!  Beginning with winnig 9 of 21 races during His 2017 U.S. Formula 4 Championship triumph…

Kirkwood had emotional push to Indy Pro 2000 title

The 2021 Indy Lights Championship was dominated by two current IndyCar drivers. With Kirkwood coming out on top vs. David Malukas. With Kirkwood winning ten times vs. Malukas seven.

Kyle Kirkwood wins 2021 Indy Lights title – Andretti Global

Kirkwood’s ten wins tied Greg Moore’s record for most Indy Lights wins in a season in 1995. When Moore won an impressive 10 of 12 races enroute to that year’s title.

Kyle made history by becoming the first driver to win all three rungs of the Road to Indy ladder. Doing so as a rookie no less and winning all consecutively!

The 2020 Indy Lights Championship was cancelled due to COVID-19, seeing Vasser Sullivan Racing throw the talented youngster a “lifeline”. With Kyle saying loyal to the team ever since. Most notably having won the 2022 Petit Le Mans and 2024 12 Hours of Sebring GTD Pro class with Jack Hawksworth and Ben Barnicoat in the No. 14 entry.

Also winning a round of IMSA GTD competition at Detroit in 2022. All behind the keyboard of the venerable Lexus RC F GT3.

Kirkwood made His IndyCar debut for A.J. Foyt enterprises at the 2022 St Petersburg season opener, and the rest has been history…

Back when winning the Indy Lights title guaranteed you three races including the Indianapolis 500, on a one-year loan to Foyt. Kyle had a best finish of tenth at Long Beach before returning to then Andretti Autosport in 2023 as Alexander Rossi’s replacement.

Kyle claimed His maiden IndyCar victory at Long Beach, and won again at the Nashville street circuit, finishing 11th overall for 2023.

2024 saw zero wins, before His breakout season the following year when claiming three wins, including His first Oval (Gateway) and fourth in the championship.

This year, Kirkwood won twice, both at inaugural events, both street circuits. First winning at Arlington, and then later dominating the Freedom 250 in Washington D.C. Where the Floridian had joked about Arm Deg’ due to the race’s unusually long distance of 250 miles. (147 laps)

Kyle finished second overall; entering the Laguna Seca finale in third, one point behind Christian Lundgaard. Yet His runner-up finish behind Scott McLaughlin saw Kirkwood claim His career best overall finish to date. Although once again, The Surgeon’, aka Alex Palou was untouchable enroute to a fifth IndyCar title, 86 points ahead. (631 v 545)

One has to chuckle now over Kirkwood losing out upon the Mazda Road to Indy Scholarship Shootout to fellow Floridian Oliver Askewy in 2016. As Kirkwood’s win tally between 2018 to 2021 is insane! Winning 46 of 67 races! A winning percentage of 68.657% if I’ve done my ryth-muh-tickin’ correctly?

Factoring His further nine U.S. F4 wins for a tally of 55 of88 races, which I believe is the original tally I came up with years ago? Equates to a diminished strike rate of only standing atop the podium 62.5% of the time, Aye Karumba!

Thus, this is one of the driver choices you could say I got right, Hya! As winning the coveted No Fenders nifSTAR trophy, if only we had one! Is probably as prestigious as winning Oilpressures Drive of the Day award, Eh!

Haas’s F1 Gong show

As where’s the ‘Ol Cat-in-The-Hat’ when Yuhs need Him?

During the lead-up to this year’s Italian grand Prix, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu confirmed they were holding their own version of Jack Roush’s legendous’ gong Show for Esteban Ocon’s seat for 2027.

Back-in-the-day, Roush used to hold driver shoot-outs for His Trans Am team. As I still recall Robby dirtMann’ Gordon coming out on top for the Nasty Whistler Ford Mustang Trans Am car in the early 1990’s…

Ok, so my memory’s a little hazy. Since it was actually for Roush’s IMSA GTO entry, which Gordon drove that Nasty Whistler Radar sponsored Mustang in 1991, albeit He did run a Trans Am event in 1992.

“Ayao Komatsu says Esteban Ocon is competing with Ryo Hirakawa, Jack Doohan, Leonardo Fornaroli and Rafael Camara for one 2027 Haas drive.”

Although its worth noting that Haas F1 driver Oliver “Ollie” Beraman, a Ferrari Academy member is set to retain His drive for next season.

Hirakawa, Fornaroli and Camara tested at Jerez previously. With Doohan set to test at Jerez following the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid.

Doohan is Haas’s reserve driver this year, while Hirakawa is backed by Toyota. Camara is a Ferrari Academy member, and Fornaroli is the reigning Formula 2 champion and McLaren F1 reserve driver.

Of these four aspiring drivers, I’d have to guess that Fornaroli is the leading candidate, but who knows, Eh? As politics could play a role in deciding. And who will Haas favour. Toyota or Ferrari? Both substantial Haas F1 backers.

As the latest scuttlebutt now puts Ferrari “Junior” Rafael Camara as the leading candidate at 90% certain, while only time will tell…
