Maxxum-gate rolls on

“I’m MAD as HELL! And I’m KNOTS Gonna take itzs NO-More! Now get back here Mien Fraulein…”
And speaking of violating… Good on you mate… *Tony Cotman’s swipe at the Gerry & PT show) It’s not looking overly great for the Grand Pooh-Bah of the FIA, better known as presiding President MAD Max Mosley, a.k.a. Sir Maxxum…

Who’s just had his court action to bar Rhubarb Murdoch’s News ‘O the Wurld: DENIED… As the London court Judge said any further attempt to block showing the “Voluntarily Removed” grainy 16mm video of Sir Maxxum’s playing Alvedasei with der Snausage... Ja, bitz kin ze Barron’s Snausage? Ja Volt! Would be futile…

Meanwhile, just sent out to us aspiring motorsports hacks on official FIA stationary… HMM? Perhaps Sir Maxxum is trying to save his Deutschmarks for his defense fund? Comes word that there will be an extraordinary FIA General Assembly meeting held on June 3rd to admonish the Headmaster with a possible vote of No Confidence or better yet throw the MAD-Maxxum-Man UNDER the bus…

Better still, for all of those of you shedding a tear on your three ply charm in for Max Mosley, perhaps you’d wish to visit Full Throttle and toss a few greenbacks into the Bosley “Just for Men” Hindquarters hair transplant fund…

Oh, how the Ronster must just be reveling in Sir Maxxum’s predicament, eh?

TERRLINGA ROAD RASH

Clifford Antone
Having taken a two hour cruise aboard three Metro busses to the airport, which I must admit is pretty damn cool that you can go some very long distances between three Counties for only a $1.50 fare, I noticed that there was an extremely long line for check-in at the American Airlines ticket counter. Thus I decided to go to the front of the line to inquire which airline I should check-in at since the first leg of my trip was an American Airlines flight being operated by Alaska Samoan…

With my trusty white cane in hand I had the Alaska Airlines check-in counter girl assist me with the requisite printing of boarding passes and asking for assistance to the corresponding gate. We breezed thru security, although for the very first time there was something wrong with my hiking boots as the TSA goon said “Hold it, I need to run those boots again!”

Always a first time for something new during our RIDICULOUS Airport Security measures, which I don’t know why, but when I hear them say things like that I instantly hear those famous K Mart words… Can I get a price check on aisle three as I feel like we’re all cordoning up for another Blue Light special!

After waiting for over an hour at my gate, it was time to pre-board the aircraft and as I handed my boarding pass to the gate attendant she said; “That isn’t gonna work.” Excuse me? They’ve put you in an Emergency exit aisle window seat sir… Thus, I could not believe it, as I was upgraded to First Class! Which I’ve never had the privilege of sitting in before, Damn! These seats are nice ‘N roomy. Is that real rich Corinthian leather? And SHEISA! The flight attendant just handed me a real glass glass of OJ. As well as free snacks, as the man sitting next to me struck up a conversation and made some crack about TSA, before back pedaling, to which my reply was that my only complaint is the ridiculous amount of inconsistency.

Riddle me this; How come I can fly all the way home from Sasebo, Japan, passing thru two separate Japanese cities security gates WITHOUT ever having to remove my footwear, but they needed to screen my boots twice in Seattle. Perhaps I should have been singing these boots are made for walking, walking all over me…

After changing flights in Santa Anna, CA at the Duke’s place, as in John Wayne airport, I was back to my standard fair of being in the cheap seats towards the rear of the aeroplane… Touching down in Austin, Texas at 10:30PM, I was last off the jet while awaiting assistance to baggage. The gate attendant walked me up the gang plank where I stood waiting for my assistance, being informed that it had gone to the wrong gate! While standing in the nearly empty airport, one of the flight attendants disembarking our aircraft stopped at the check-in counter and asked me; “You did want to go to Austin, sir?” (Good thing she was asking me now, eh?)

My assistance finally arrived and as we walked towards baggage I noticed that the place seemed deserted and the majority of lights were turned off. Oh, that’s because we’ve sent everybody home since all of the flights to Dallas have been cancelled due to its seven inch accumulation of SNOW! Yet, as we went down the escalator, she said there’s your family sir, as Nelie was waving at us… As it’s always good to have the person you’re meeting on the other end waiting for you when you arrive…

The next morning, I awoke to an empty apartment after having slept in, as “Bonnie ‘N Clyde” had both gone to work. When staying with Clyde & Nelie the first time in Sasebo, we broke into hysterics when two young Japanese school girls asked us; ‘Where is bonnie,” upon Clyde introducing us.

Stevie Ray Vaughn
That afternoon there was the usual annoying knock of Clyde on the door, saying open up Arse-hole! Nelie’s locked me out. So I let Clyde in who was just dropping by between his School Bus runs in order to get something to drink… (Doesn’t everybody leave a yellow school bus idling in front of their domicile?)

Returning back to my book on tape… About 10 minutes later there was another similar knocking on the door. On the second annoying knock as I’d left the door unlocked, I got up and opened it, thinking Clyde must have forgotten something? Thus I was surprised to have a woman standing at the door. When I asked her what she wanted, she started jabbering away in a really bad English or Tagalic dialect. Since I couldn’t understand a single word she said.

Then the next thing I knew, she’d stepped around me and was now standing inside the apartment pointing towards the back of the unit… Still totally unsure of what she was gesturing at?

she simply walked into the bathroom, pulled her pants down and proceeded to go to the bathroom without closing the door!!! Oh crap, I DON’T NEED TO SEE ANY OF THAT!!! Aye Carumba…

Then she simply left, as I was speechless and all I could think of was “Welcome to Texas!”
Although we’d originally planned to leave for Washington DC on either Saturday or Sunday, our plans were pushed back and hence, Clyde took an extra day’s worth of driving on Saturday. For entertainment, Nelie drove me to the Capitol of Texas, which happened to be just down the street as they’re living just off of South Congress street which dead ends at the Capitol building. We managed to arrive just-in-time for the daily tour of the Capitol building which was finished in 1888. And I was glad that we’d decided to go check out this place, as the tour guide was most informative upon the doings of the Austin legislature.

Afterwards, Nelie and I walked around quite a bit trying to find the entrance to the underground foyer’s (Levels U1-U2) as there’s a very cool open air circular courtyard at the end of these underground offices. The two underground levels lead to the outside courtyard and are framed of rich granite archways which immediately made me think of Italy… (Which turns out to be exactly what the Architects intended) And the courtyard has a giant ceramic Texas emblem in the center of it.

Later that evening we proceeded to go check out Clyde’s boat over at his friend Paul & Jackie’s house, before driving to the famous Salt Lick restaurant in Hayne County, which we discovered is a “Dry” county, although the barbeque food was very good, we all agreed later that it wasn’t worth the hour and a half wait…

Sunday morning as we awaited Mary Ellen’s arrival from Mexico City, Mexico… Clyde had offered to give Oliver another driving lesson. Of course we were one hour late, since Nelie & Clyde didn’t believe me when I told them that we’d be “Springing Ahead” 1hr at 2AM Saturday night… So, when we arrived to pick-up Oliver he said you’re one hour late, man… But Oliver who’s from the Congo was very happy to be driving Clyde’s automobile.

Being from the Congo, Oliver had never seen or been around automobiles his whole life… But now he and his brother Alexander are most determined to learn and join this American past time… Yet, things definitely seemed to get lost in translation. After making Oliver drive backwards around the storage locker, while Clyde and I looked for Nelie’s table, I made the mistake of asking Clyde; Do you have to parallel park for the Texas driving exam? Yeah, that’s a good idea, to which Clyde tried verbally explaining to Oliver, who’s fluent in French and English is his third language? No, Clyde why don’t you show him… Well, just because I know it doesn’t mean I can do it… To which we set up some dummy cars made up of some of the various boxes in storage we were currently wading thru. Yet Oliver couldn’t seem to grasp the concept of what the car’s wheels are doing in relation to reversing direction and next thing we knew he was putting a dent into the Buick and an even larger dent into the adjoining storage unit!

As Mark Knoffler sang long, long, ago… “Sunday driver never took a test, Only in the wild, wild, West!”

Then we made the first of many mad dashes… Off to the Rodeo to hear George “NO-SHOW” Jones, who was preceded by the rodeo… With the highlight being the children’s sheep riding contest! Yes, they actually had kids trying to ride sheep… And you may insert your Montana Sheep joke’s here, if so desired? Then Clyde left to go pick-up Mary Ellen, while Nelie and I watched more of the Rodeo action.

Later that evening, we ventured Downtown to Antone’s to check out an excellent band; Del Castillo, who reminded me a bit of The Los Lonely Boys, as I was totally unaware of the significance of this music establishment, Mary Ellen explained that Clifford Antone was instrumental in establishing Austin’s reputation for music and his House of Blues had hosted many significant performers as well as Clifford playing bass guitar with some of the legends to grace his club.

The A-list names included the likes of; Fats Domino, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Delbert McClinton, Pinetop Perkins and BB King just to name a few as Mary Ellen read off some of the autographs hanging from the club’s walls.

I was also unaware of the fact that Clifford was the driving force behind Stevie Ray Vaughn’s career, as he’d coerced Albert King into letting Stevie sit-in on a session at his club one night when Stevie was currently only known as Jimmy Vaughn’s little brother… And the rest is history! Yet, Clifford was also instrumental in furthering the careers of Albert Collins, Jimmy Vaughn, Double Trouble and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Clifford was also quick to react to Hurricane Katrina, being one of the very first to host an All Star benefit in 2005 called; Neighbors in Need.

Walking back to the car, Clyde took great satisfaction in the fact that he noticed a brand new Ford F150 pick-up and shiny black Audi sedan both completely covered in bird shit from the flourishing Grackle population…

Long Beach finale

According to Tony Cotman, who was on Autosport Radio this evening, he claims that he’s seen the Long Beach Champ Car finale entry list and there are 20 cars on it…

When asked about PT showing up, Cotman said, yeah, he’ll be there… But I thought he’d said Forsythe had violated his contract to which Cottman brilliantly deadpanned; “I DON’T know who’s violated who over there…”

Singing in the Streets of St Pete

I found it a bit surprising that I chose to watch the Indy Car race ahead of the Formula 1 race, being an F1 Diehard… but, I was more intrigued to see if the Champ Car boyzs could kick some tail over the IRL veterans… OOPS! I keep forgetting it’s the “Unity Carzs” series now and we’re all one big happy family…

And my apologies to the IMS radio crew as Marty (My hero’s named Tiger) Reid explained how the driver Ernesto told them he wanted to be called EJ, which seems a bit silly to me. I mean isn’t that who referee’s between Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith on TNT’s Basketball show? Or is he worried that Ernesto will be shortened to Ernie, as in Bert “N Ernie… Or that the tag EJ will make us think of that plucky Irishman better known as Eddie Jordan? But I digress…

Ah, it looked like it was gonna be a REAL Street race, I mean those cats were gonna have to run in the rain… Which they never do on an Oval, eh? And by jeez, there was even a fair amount of passing during the days spin-dry induced festivities, which saw several drivers practicing their victory doughnuts prior to getting to the chequered flag… (And look everyone, NOT even a single peep ‘bout the Princess’s multiple pirouettes…)

Yet the wet conditions caught several drivers out even after they’d gone several laps behind the pace car trying to dissipate the standing water at the end of the circuit. (Turns 11-14) as Brian “Huff ‘N Puff” Barnhart chatted with TK and Helioe over their in-car radios…

And wasn’t it funny seeing Brienne Pedigo standing in-between Justin Wilson and Will Power as Justin towered over both of them… Which was funny to hear David Hobbs comment on how in the earth did Justin ever squeeze into a F1 chassis, upon commenting on how Robert Kubica is fairly tall along with the Kimster and Mark “Shrimp on the Barbie” Webber… As Justin had a brief go in Formula 1 for Paul Stoddart’s under funded minnow Minardi before briefly driving alongside Webber at Jaguar…

Thus, talk about your poor segways… As the race encountered the first of it’s record six yellow flags, when none other than Justin “Buckshot” Wilson took over the lead by not pitting and thus became the very first “Transition” driver to lead a lap of the Indy Car World Series. Although I’m assuming Justin’s race strategy went out of the window due to his pit stop timing plus changing weather conditions…

As the mad gamble of who’d roll the dice first to switch over to slicks on a drying racetrack, made the race highly entertaining, as the front five was a cast of non-regulars, as EJ; You can call me Ray, Jay, Bob, but just don’t call me Ernesto… Led his teammate Enrique “Suave” Bernoldi, followed by Vitor Meira , Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jay Howard, as Scott Goodyear quickly quipped; “When had you ever seen a Marty Roth vehicle running that high before?”

And speaking of Mr. Goodyear, I found it funny to hear him taking a swipe at Darren Manning, who’d gotten the AJ “Flinstone’s SUCK! Foyt entry as high as fourth place, claiming that perhaps Darren should take a break from the golf links as he’s never letting his hands rest and was driving with bruised thumbs after loosing a fourth place finish last year at St Pete due to blistered hands… While Super Tex reported all he could hear that BLOODY Brit sayin’ over the radio was “I’ve got blisters on my fingers.”

With stealth-like race strategy, as the #06 had worked it’s way steadily forward, we were suddenly cast with the un-official IMS chief Jack Arute shadowing Bobby Rahal who’d earlier confessed to being conflicted over who’d he’d rather see in victory lane, his son or his team car as suddenly young Graham was leading the pack with Hunter-Reay nipping at his heals in second place…

And very impressively, the 19yr old pulled away from the entire pack, pulling out a lead of almost five seconds over Team Penske’s lone remaining charge; Mr. Blue Suede Shoes, who’d worked his way past the slowing Hunter-Reay, who ironically was having to conserve his remaining cargo of Ethanol… Before another yellow flag came out, as apparently Townsend Bell had forgotten what double waving yellow flags mean, as he mounted the somewhat hapless Meira.

Yet, with just a few laps remaining, Rahal 2.0 pulled away easily from Castromeves, to take a most impressive debut Indy Car race win. Apparently Newman Haas Lanigan took a page out of Paul “Chrome Horn” Tracy’s Cleveland playbook, after young Messer Rahal spun out early in the race to come back and claim victory in his very first Indy Car start… The only thing different was that Graham didn’t hit anybody enroute to winning, becoming the youngest ever winner in the Indy Racing League, beating Marco Andretti for the honours. Rahal also joined a very exclusive club of first time victors, as this list now has just four names on it; Buzz Calkins, inaugural IRL event in 1996. Juan Pablo Montoya, 2000 Indy 500 and Scott Dixon at Homestead in 2003.

And as glad as I was to have somebody other than the “Earle’s” big three; Penske, TCGR and Andretti Green win… Having broken the string of 37 straight victories by that trio, I’m still waiting to see somebody else besides Newman Haas Lanagin be the “Juan’s” to do so, ACK! To think I’d like to see Kevin “Boss Hawg” Kalkhoven’s squad join the fray… Nah, how ‘bout either the Conquest or HVM teams upsetting the apple cart? Yeah, I know it all comes down to those dreaded greenbacks…

As for the overly astute Marty Reid’s comments towards the Tiger Woods victory lane hug-fest… All I can say is FOUR!

F1: Bahrain Sand Dunes - 2008 edition

I’d have to say that with the continuing Maxxum-gate and the St. Pete Indy Car race, my thoughts have been wandering like the shifting sands of the Bahrain Kingdom, which still amazes me that the entire Island nation is smaller than the square footage of the neighboring Saudi Arabia airport…

Thus I found Friday’s practice session to be fairly non-descript, besides the re-hashing of Max Mosley’s Pictionary games. Although I found it a bit funny to hear how Professor Matchett’s ex co-worker (John Wheatley) and crew chief of some guy named Schumacher’s at Benetton had been called before the FIA to explain the rash of Red Bull’s suspension failures and whether or not the chassis were indeed safe?

I also enjoyed hearing Peter Windsor’s recanting of the Williams team fooling the FIA scrutineers over the mirror’s rearward visibility, saying that they’d had an Engineer hooked up to a radio to say yes… As the steward scurried about the rear of the car as Adrian Newey had positioned the mirrors in an outward’s location in favour of aerodynamics vs. driver’s visibility. As this had all come up over DC’s less than complimentary comments over the radio we’d been allowed to hear.

And the comment towards The Krakow Kid (Robert Kubica) deciding to loose six kilos of weight off his rakish thin frame in order to help the BMW Sauber team play with ballast is simply astounding! (6 kilos = 13.23lbs) As I always find this utterly amazing when drivers go to such measures in the vain of ultimate car performance…

Then with 8 minutes to go Lewis Hamilton slid over a kerb and slammed sideways into the tire wall, ripping the front wheel and suspension mounts clean off his chassis, to which the McLaren mechanics would stay at the track until 4:30AM building up a new vehicle, as the FIA has STUPIDLY Banned the use of spare chassis this season. Although the teams are allowed to bring spare monocoque’s (tubs) they’re not allowed to be built-up units and thus the McLaren boys worked late into the night building up a new chassis for Hamilton as he’d tweaked the sensitive bonded suspension pick-up points into disrepair, as well as both Louise’s and Heikki’s cars having issues with their transmissions… Ah, the life of an F1 mechanic, eh?

Yet the only surprise of Q1 Qualifying was the Hamburgular outpacing his teammate, the German hot schue Sebastian Vettel, as Sea Bass’s 9th time held up for P16 as the runners completed their flying laps, thus Bourdais made his way forward into Q2, out qualifying Vettel for the first time this season.

And the usual suspects made their way forwards from Q2 into the final Q3 Qualie session, although it was “Jense’s” first time this far up the grid in quite some time.

And I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy the camaraderie that the Three Amigos in the SPEED TV Formula 1 broadcast booth have developed, as Bob Varsha and David Hobbs have been friend and broadcasting colleagues for several years, thus I broke into laughter when Hobbo claimed that ‘Ol Phil Massa was lurking like a Spectre over Louise’s shoulder towards the final Qualie session… Which caused Varsha to chide the elder Hobb’s: NO more coffee for you. (Sunshine)

As although Massa had been blindingly quick the whole qualifying session, he was pipped by Kubica at the very end of the session by less than three one-hundred’s of a second, which gave both the Krakow Kid and BMW Sauber their very first Pole position, which of course caused Varsha to make the requisite Pole on Pole jokes…

Although it was later revealed that it was the very first time in Sauber’s 15yrs as a Constructor and the first time that a new team and driver had garnered the honours since Rubens Barrichello scored the REAL EJ’s (Eddie Jordan) first Pole in 1994.

Thus the grid formed up with Kubica on Pole, Massa in P2, with Hamilton third with the Iceman Kimi alongside in fourth. Row three saw Heikki ahead of Quick Nick in the second BMW Sauber. Row four was an all Toyota engine affair with Toyota’s Trulli “Scrumptious joined by Williams Nico Rosberg, with Jense’s Honda lining up in P9 with the affable Spaniard Alonso slotted in tenth.

Yet Kubica’s moment in the spotlights was soon finished, as Phil Massa sprang like a champagne cork and took the lead, immediately screaming off into the distance on the first of his many hot laps. But the commotion of lap one fell to Hamilton’s unusual lack of pace as the lights went green, dropping from P3 all the way back to tenth, even worse, being stuck behind his favourite dancing partner… Some dude named Fredrico Suave… Who I believe gave the young Louise a patented Ferdi (Hi) Jink as we witnessed Hamilton clouting into the rear of Alonso’s slower Renault which demolished Lewis’s front nose and effectively ruined his race…

After these shenanigans settled down and Professor Matchett pointed out the large chunk of rear wing missing from Ferdi’s rear wing… The race settled down into somewhat procession-like running, although there was an entertaining dust-up between Button and DC. And the comments about DC’s mirrors of course came into the fray as well as Jense not having too far to drive as he’s taken up residence in the Bahrain Kingdom something to do with not having to pay taxes… Although it seems a bit galling to think that this little Island can successfully host a GP with a maximum attendance of 34,000 spectators, while Tony’s ‘lil Sandbox isn’t good enough for Emperor Bernardo…

And speaking of Coulthard, he earned the word of the week, when describing kerb hopping as; Kerb Strike.

Thus as the Ferrari boyzs traded fastest laps and drove off into the sunset, the BMW Sauber teammates were left to scrum over the final podium position, which Kubica held onto, while Massa redeemed himself with the Italian press by convincingly winning over Raikkonen.

Kimi’s second place finish propelled him into the championship points lead while Hamilton’s 13th place finish. (His career worst) dropped him to third in the standings, while Kubica’s podium coupled with Heidfeld’s fourth place sees BMW Sauber take the Constructor’s points lead by one point over the Scuderia, who lead McLaren by a further one point, as we’ll now have a three week break for everyone to get rested up before the European season kicks-off in Barcelona…

Jimmy Clark

While we all prattle on about Sir Maxxum’s promiscuity…

Sadly, today marks the 40th Anniversary of one of Formula 1’s greatest driver’s death, as Jimmy Clark perished in a non-championship F2 race at Hockenheim this very day four decades ago…

Max exposure

While I suppose it’s NOT funny, for some strange reason I found Full Throttle’s; Springtime for Hitler post quite amusing over Sir Maxxum’s promiscuity…

Yet, obviously the Max Mosley sexcapade story isn’t diminishing as four of the major Automaker’s currently competing in Formula 1 have voiced their disapproval of Max Mosley’s behaviour, as first Mercedes Benz and BMW issued a joint statement admonishing the headmaster of their sport, publicly stating that his behaviour was disgraceful, while both Toyota and Honda quickly followed suit, with even sterner reprimands…

And this was before the ADAC; Germany’s motoring club strongly suggested Max seriously re-consider his position on the matter, as in perhaps you should step down from your post “Old Man.”

Although Jean Todt has been rumoured to be positioning himself for a run at MAD Max’s position in 2009, there’s now questions of how Todt’s friendship with Sir Maxxum will affect his candidacy? Although one would assume that with Todt’s longstanding relationship with ex-007 Bond girl-girlfriend Michele Woo, the Frenchman would be content…

And while very briefly in Washington DC, it was announced that New Your Governor Elliot Spitzer had decided to resign after being caught frolicking about with said women of the night… Although I was more impressed by his replacement; Lt. Governor David Paterson, who’s not only the first African American elevated to such a position, but the fact that he’s also the very first legally blind person to hold such a post!

Thus, I found it a bit surprising that the FOX owned SPEED Channel reporters seemed to shy away from the matter completely during Friday’s qualifying episode, especially after Bob Varsha revealed that the British tabloid; The News of the World, which had published the story with grainy video was also owned by SPEED’s parent company, F-O-X. Yet, at the 55 minutes to go mark the subject of Sir Maxxum was finally brought up when Peter Winsor asked the always insightful “Wee Scot,” better known as Sir Jackie (Stewart) for his thoughts on a subject he’d most likely not be asked about…

And I find it amazing how diplomatic Sir Jackie stays no matter how many times he’s been lambasted by MAD Max… Yet, never afraid to answer any question and just said it’s a very sad situation… Even if it is his private life and these allegations are found to be true, I think it’s sad an I think his position is untenable… Just look at what happened to the Governor of New York who decided his position was compromised, but I suppose it’s still early days yet?

Adding fuel to the fire was Sir Maxxums non-denial denial that he’d be staying in London this weekend to plan his upcoming holiday, Err, work on his legal defense when indeed the Crown Prince of Bahrain; Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa had forbidden him entrance into his Kingdom.

Meanwhile other various International motoring clubs are voicing there disapproval in various ways over Mosley’s tawdriness, with some already stating that they’ll vote against Max in the upcoming special FIA meeting. Thus, it seems more and more unlikely that Max Mosley can continue on as the FIA president and should indeed resign his post…
