Davey Hamilton - Postscript

This No Fenders Feature Story  was originally posted on February 19, 2008 as a companion post to Terre Haute Trio; Prior to Blogger.com deciding to irrevocably SHATTER the Original NoFenders.net (V1.0) Blogsite - Hence leaving your Humble Scribe with 1,500+ Posts potentially with BROKEN images; SHEISA! Which unfortunately this story was one of the countless and strangely when I uploaded the corresponding Davey ‘STUD Hamilton Strike-the-Pose! Pic late Friday evening (Sept 9) for reasons unknown... Blogger moved it FORWARD 3+ years & to the FRONT of the Queue; CRIKEYS!

But it’s somewhat Karmic since Messer Hamilton endured a HORRIFIC SHUNT a la ‘Zorro, aka Alex Zanardi - ten years ago himself; and hence I decided to update the story to 2011-spec’s; in two-part Harmony...

INTERVIEW: Terre Haute Trio

So, where do I begin? As this has to be one of the “Coolest Cats” (Drivers) I’ve had the pleasure of personally meeting. (Which I did during the summer of ’07) As little did I know just how much interaction I’d have with him, as he was overly gracious with me that most memorable day in July, having flown back to Indiana to take my ride aboard the Sinden 2X single seater at the Speedway

First Danny introduced us, as Davey was nonchalantly sitting behind the check-in desk. Then we surprised him with a limited first edition No Fenders T-Shirt, of which Davey proclaimed he’d wear while at the office that afternoon; Yeah, right!

Thent we got to spend an amazing amount of time talking to him; 15-25 minutes approximately before Davey told us he needed to go get changed. And I just sat there awestruck with a silly (GOOFY!) grin across my face as everybody inside the Formula 1 garage was watching Messer Hamilton strut toward the hot pits in his driver suit, a la sleeves tied around the waist and sporting the No Fenders T-Shirt… SHEISA!

But, my 15 minutes ‘O fame wasn’t over yet, as next thing I knew I was being shepherded to the pit lane to stand in front of the Sinden land shark to pose once again with Davey while everybody else stood around listening to instructions being barked out prior to us waiting to take the E-Ticket ride of our lifetimes!

What I’d totally forgotten about Davey was the horrific crash and injuries he’d suffered at Texas Motor Speedway in 2001, as this high-speed oval seems to have a nasty habit of destroying driver’s lower extremities. Recall that this is the track that was too fast for CART to tame, as they’d had to cancel the race after having fears about drivers blacking out due to the excessive G Forces they’d be enduring.

And then, there’s been the multiple blow-over’s, which have cost Kenny Brack, and Davey Hamilton life threatening injuries, as the close quarters of racing wheel to wheel on this high speed oval seems to be a recipe for carnage. (Along with Ganassi Racing’s Pablo Perez and Ryan Briscoe’s terrible accidents at Homestead and Chicagoland respectively)

On that terrible day in 2001, Davey Hamilton was trying to get around back marker Jeret Schroeder; whose engine expired, causing Hamilton to spin in the offending slippery liquids deposited on track before cart-wheeling  into the infield.

Trying to extricate himself from the wreckage of his racecar, Hamilton was unaware that his feet were barely hanging on by just a few pieces of flesh and bone. After the Doctors back in Indianapolis pieced his broken feet back together with 15 pins in one and 13 pins plus a rod in the other, Hamilton would endure a total of 21 surgeries over a period of four years along with spending a year in a wheel chair on his road to recovery.

Yet, Hamilton ultimately decided that he wanted to attempt a comeback if he could put together the right opportunity for a ride in competitive Machinery, which took several years to accomplish.

Davey spent time reacclimatizing himself to the cockpit of a single seater as a chauffeur for the Sinden 2X Indycar Experience program, along with doing colour commentary work on WIBC Radio as well as being a spotter for Cheever Racing.

It was thru the Indy Racing Experience that Hamilton chauffeured an executive of Hewlett Packard which would ultimately lead to the most amazing return to the Speedway in 2007 after a six year absence, as Hamilton would make up one fourth of Tony George’s Vision Racing armada. And while Hamilton may not have been the quickest gun in George’s stable, Hamilton led the Vision Racing brigade home with a top finish of ninth place…

While chit-chatting with Davey on that wonderful day in July, I was reminded that he’s a Boise, Idaho native who’d cut his racing teeth in Sprint Cars as he reeled off about 8-9 short tracks in the Pacific Northwest that I’d never heard of. And while listening to the Terre Haute Trio interview, I learned that Davey along with his father have been managing Meridian Speedway for the past 20 years, along with having a son who’s now competing in racing. (JD Hamilton)

Thus, while I believe that Davey would like another shot at the upcoming year’s (2008) Indy 500, it seems unlikely as I’ve read that he’ll be back in the booth as the Indycar Radio Network’s colour commentator instead. Also, Tony George seems to be close to shutting down his team in order to free up chassis for the impending arrival of Champ Car teams, having given Tomas Scheckter and AJ Foyt IV their walking papers.

Hopefully Davey will continue chauffeuring those of us privileged enough to ride behind him at 180mph! While it sounds like he’s planning for his future as a race track promoter, whenever he decides its time to step away from the cockpit, along with watching his son try to become a professional racecar driver. At least his daughter doesn’t seem to have been bitten by the racing bug to date.

Thanks Davey and Good Luck!

Zanardi wins NY Marathon

Heard it first on SpeedCentre - when Leigh Diffey busted out the news in the waning moments that ‘Zorro had done the unthinkable... And WON the Handbike division of this year’s New York Marathon; Aye Karumba!

Way to GO Alex!

American Young gun to shine during Abu Dhabi weekend...

20yr old American rising star Alexander Rossi, who finished third in this year’s World Series by Renault (WSR 3.5) series - and a Team Lotus Reserve Driver via its Driver Academy is set to partake in not only the Abu Dhabi GP2 ‘AllStarz season finale during the Grand Prix weekend as a support race to the Formula 1 ‘BigBoyz event... But will also take part in the forthcoming F1 Young Drivers test - taking part immediately after the Formula 1 weekend’s Grand Prix with Team Lotus; who’ll become Caterham F1 Team for 2012...

And the Hits just keep on coming

And no sooner did I think we’d had the last of unexpected news regarding the 2012 Indy Car Series this week - than another few pieces of the puzzle were seemingly solved. As first Meesh’s ‘bud Booby Ruble, Err, Bobby Rahal announced they’d placed orders for two ’12 Dallara’s and would run a 2-car effort next year with Honda engines.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has also hired Tom Anderson to become its Team President, while longtime Team Rahal employee and Bobby’s “Right-hand-man” Scott Roembke will remain on as a consultant. As I recall Penske Racing’s Tim Cindric wishing him a speedy recovery & get well soon ‘Shout-out during ‘Juan ‘O the Versus broadcasts this year. Thus, I’m guessing the addition of Anderson, ousted from Andretti Autosports after its woeful Indy qualifying performance this year is in order to help ease Roembke’s workload...

Also, as SPEED’s Marshall Pruett reported, Penske Racing will keep its three-car team intact for next season, which makes me most happy for Ryan Briscoe - as hopefully thee Three Amigo’s can finally defeat that perennial Chump, Err Champ-pee-on Dashley LePew; Hya!

FAST EDDIE on the Move

And as I finished my Silly Season story (below) and then began making another sweep of ze Internetz - DAMN YOU ‘DAWG! I noticed Pressdog had a piece up ‘bout Fast Eddie (Carpenter) starting his own IndyCar race team for next year; WTF?

Thus, as I know how much of an ED supporter (and Sarah Fisher) supporter Pressdog is; Hmm? Is this just some more of his fanciful writing in hopes of Ed landing a ride next year? But the story seems legit, albeit I won’t be attending the press briefing today - as I’ve got other CRAP to do, so I’ll not get to hear the particulars - if any are divulged?

Yet with Larry and (son) Matt Curry having just been fired from Dreyer & Reinbold Racing; I’ll be SHOCKED if the pair doesn’t end up on the ECR Payroll next year, as after all I believe it’s really Tony’s team, as in Tony George...

Have NO idea on where they’ll be based, since Sam Schmidt Motorsports (SSM) moved into the former Vision Racing haunt one year ago, as I seem to think that Sarah Fisher Racing (SFR) is in the ex-Marty Roth shop, so I’ll be interested to learn where Ed Carpenter Racing winds up at, while I have NO idea on whether or not TG kept his shiny Transporter(s) or sold them off to Schmidt or someone else?

And may be PR extraordinaire Pat Capperali can be lured back into the fold? As I think somebody said she’s available right now? While I’m also guessing they’ll be running Chebbies (Chevrolet) next year.

And this is good news for IndyCar, as they’ll now have two brand new teams next year, with Michael Shank Racing (MSR) already having been announced; while I’m certainly hoping that SFR can remain a part-time team next year with either Tomas “Rockem-sockem” Scheckter or Buddy ‘HotRod Rice?

And there’s still the unknown entities of Dragon Racing and AFS, not to mention what Bryan Herta’s up to?

Bloggers Start Your Engines - It’s Silly Season time...

Listened to a very long winded, rambling, bumblin’ Trackside with Kevin & Cavin Tuesday night who spent a good portion of the show speculatin’ over the current field ‘O IndyCar drivers and their potential for next year’s title chase.

Obviously the current “Hottest” Free-agent property is Justin ‘BIG UNIT Wilson, who could apparently be mulling over offers from as many as six potential teams? With arguably the best ride being the empty No. 7 Andretti Autosport seat that Dan Wheldon was to occupy next year.

Yet, now that KV Racing Technology has finally announced publicly one of the worst kept secrets - that its joining the Bowtie Brigade next year alongside current Chevy customers Penske and Andretti... I’m personally hoping Justin will choose KVRT over Andretti, since he’d potentially have a better opportunity to “shine” there, eh? As in three-cars vs. four, albeit Alan McDonald did return to the fold - TAG’s (Alex Tagliani) Indy 500 Pole-winning Engineer...

Yet, I’m wondering if perhaps Mikey already has his Bonafied Open Wheel star in his stable; Hmm? Why couldn’t ‘BULLY-RAY (Ryan Hunter-Reay) take over the No. 7 seat instead and then let an up ‘N comer future talent deputize in the ex-Hunter-Reay seat? Say like Joseph Newgarden, Martin ‘PLOWIE Plowman or even Wade Cunningham?

After Wilson, I’d haveda guess the next biggest fish in the pond would be le Hamburgular, aka Sebastian ‘Sea Bass Bourdais, who’d like to step-up from his Dale Coyne ride... Whilst the likes of Vitor Meira & Alex Lloyd come to mind for teams seeking Ovaltrack experts, albeit not sure how many Ovals will be retained next season? While hopefully the Loudon and Milwaukee scuttlebutt will come to fruition; so ‘Dar Yuhs have-it, let the Silly Season Shenanigans begin...

AUTOS: Chevrolet turns 100 - Again...

Whale I was trying to decide on whether or not to comment towards my feelings towards the Bowtie Brigade, as after all I’ve been known to call their main racing brand ‘Chebbie on more then one occasion... As I find it funny how I was left ponderin’ how Chevy could be celebrating their 100th Anniversary again? Hmm? Is GM so DESPERATE that it’s pullin’ an IMS Centennial 2.0 - having just celebrated its second 100th Birthday this May...

NOPE! Once again your Humble Scribe had merged his factoids together, as I know very little About the late William C. Durant, who incorporated General Motors back in September of 1908 - before ultimately buying out Louis Chevrolet and then merging the Chevrolet brand into the General’s fold...

As ironically both men would go on to ultimately win the Indy 500, albeit neither in Chevrolet’s, as I believe the Bowtie didn’t actually win at the Speedway until finally breaking the then dominant Ford-Cosworth’s victory streak in 1988... BUTT! I’ll leave that discussion for the Dean ‘O I500 bloggers, Numero Uno Tennessee Titans fan Geo. Phillips instead.

Of course I was happy to learn via the History books that ‘Ol Shel, aka Carroll Shelby’s mighty Cobra’s, both in 289cid small block & 427cid Big Block form annihilated the Chevrolet Corvette amongst other competitors, whilst Ford under the careful supervision of Shelby defeated ALL comers at Circuit de la Sarthe - including Ferrari in 1966-67, before “FoMoCo’s” Henry Ford II pulled the plug on the project...

Yet, Chevrolet has always been a thorn in Ford’s side; be it Mark Donohue winning in The Captain’s (Roger Penske) NASTY Sunoco-blue Zed-28 Camaro, or “The Scotty Brothers,” nee Scott Sharp and Scott “Scooter” Pruett winning further Trans Am titles during the latter Detroit “Big-3” Factory “Pony Cars” wars... Not to mention some chap named Jack Baldwin, as all three men slayed Tommy Kendall aboard his NARLY Roush Racing Ford Mustang!

Encore for a Muscle Car Legend

And then there’s those beautiful canary yellow All-conquering ‘Vette’s, as the late 1990’s - early “Ought’s” (2000’s) saw the likes of Ron Fellows, Johnny ‘O (O’Connell) ‘MAG’s (Jan Magnessen) MAD MAX (Papis) and even ‘Ol “Scooter” winning multiple GT1 crowns at LeMans aboard the Works corvette C5/C6’s... Hell, even some cheeky BRIT television reporter named Justin Bell jumped ship from the Dodge Viper to Corvette Racing in order to remain competitive in the GT1 Category...

As I’d haveda say the ‘NARLIEST ever ‘Vette I saw; ‘Whale actually more heard then anything else - as it simply shook the ground as it tried tearing up the roughshod paved Hot-pits, Err Hot Pockets? Hya! At Kent, Washington’s Pacific Raceways was an IMSA 7.0-liter Corvette - which after shattering my eardrums... Numbly rumbled by barking ‘N spitting raw racing grade petrol!

So Happy 100th Birthday Chevrolet; you’ve earned IT! Now if only Santa would leave me a ZR1 Corvette underneath the X-Mas tree this year, eh?

A Century of Chevy, From Cheap Date to America’s Sweetheart

Chevrolet turns 100
(Round 1) That’s the story title I posted three years ago - which Nobody seemed to object  towards, and thus, reading various articles ‘bout how Chevy was turning 100 this November 3rd, I kept thinking something was amiss, eh?

As I’m now assuming that September 16, 2008 instead marked the 100th Anniversary of General Motors - NOT Chevrolet,! As on September 16, 1908 incorporation papers were filed and the GM “Holding” Company quickly rose to become the world’s Number 1 Auto Manufacturer...

Yet like its remaining two adversaries of Detroit’s crumbling “Big Three;” Ford and Chrysler, Chevy had fallen on hard times three years ago after riding a long wave of credibility due to its dependence upon SUV’s and Pickup trucks, along with artificially controlled oil prices and a total unwillingness to reinvest and modernize its Corporate infrastructure, instead simply trying to sell its same staid products in new overseas markets...

Thus, although Chevy finally rolled out its much hyped Volt EV automobile some three-plus years ago - a Pre-production model; we didn’t witness too much celebrating from the company that had lost $57.5 Billion in the preceding 18 months and was trying feverishly to grease the skids for a $25 Billion (cash infusion) handout which will cost the US Taxpayer and additional $7.5b in interest...
