Time Stands Still

"Imagine a time when it all began
In the dying days of a war
A weapon that would settle the score
Whoever found it first would be sure to do their worst
They always had before..."

Although I traditionally refrain from the topic of politics, I simply cannot avoid the most appalling thoughts I had while sightseeing in Japan recently. You see I’ve now been to both WWII Atomic Bomb sites; Hiroshima, 2004 and Nagasaki, 2007.

Obviously both sites are different, yet both were civilian targets with Hiroshima being a larger city than Nagasaki. Actually Nagasaki wasn’t the primary target on that fateful day, it was a back-up target picked when Kokura was blanketed by dense clouds, obscuring the city.

Boxcar, the second B-29 bomber assigned to carry a nuclear bomb, was low on fuel, making only one pass over the target before dropping its lethal cargo at 11:02AM. As the bomb detonated above a tennis court…

After driving from Sasebo to Nagasaki, Tanja, Albin & I hopped aboard a Tram (Street Car) and rode to a nearby Atom Bomb museum stop. The museum is of an interesting design, as we walked down a continuously spiraling carpeted walkway, into the bowels of the museum.

There are several artifacts on display, beginning with pictures of the city prior to the blast. There’s a picture of an entire city street, a school, temple, farming, horses, etc. Then there’s the clock with its hands frozen at 11:02AM, retrieved from a house approx. 3 kilometers from the blast. There are several items of glass & metal that are either twisted, bent or fused together from the bomb’s massive heat. There’s even a piece of roofing you can touch, which shows the affects of the intense temperature afflicted on the ceramic tile.

There’s a single wall left of the church that was destroyed in the holocaust, as well as a counterpart of the horrific plutonium core bomb of the original “Fat Man” weapon used on Nagasaki. It’s gigantic and I think it weighed 4,000 tons.

Reports differ over the total effects of the atomic wasteland, as Nagasaki like Hiroshima three days earlier was pulverized. And although it was known that the bombing could instantly kill everyone within a 4 kilometer radius, the then unknown effects of radiation were not understood. As countless scores of people simply died in other towns listed as; Dying, causes other than Atomic bombing…

There are several gruesome pictures of dead bodies and injured people, as Nagasaki’s population was approx. 240,000 at the impact of Fat Man. Imagine in just 30 seconds, the bombs horrifically radiant heat killed over one-fourth of the population. Another one-fourth was injured along with countless thousands left homeless!

Blast damage occurred as far away as 15 kilometers, with shrapnel flying as far as 8 kilometers. The city was leveled 2.6 miles approx. (radius) with anything black catching fire up to 4 kilometers away. As all of the telephone poles left standing were charred on the side facing the blast!

On display, a section of wall recovered is quite intriguing. It too was also 4 kilometers away from the blast. Yet the bombs flash and heat was so bright and hot that it fused a man’s shadow and piece of leather into the wall! There’s also the shadow of a picket fence on the wall along with the image of leaves fused into a piece of wood…

Various exhibits with time lines of the history of the Manhattan Project are interspersed with other related events. There’s current day Atomic statistics, like every Nations projected nuclear arsenal with Russia listed at 16,000 weapons followed by the US at 10,000. And there’s a display listing every Nations atmospheric and underground Atom bomb tests since WWII.

Yet the most chilling display to me was the current day Nuclear weapons facilities, since this included Hanford, WA. I suppose why it sent a chill up my back was because it was the only video playing in English, as person after person discussed the devastating health effects of the “Down-winders.” Ranging from damaged Thyroid’s, cancer and multiple birth defects! (40+ years after being built)

Next we walked to the adjoining Peace Park, which features an elaborate display at Ground Zero, with the grass lawn being interspersed with concrete rings leading inwards to the huge 10 meter tall peace statue adorned by a black marble vault containing the names of the atomic bomb victims and survivors who died in subsequent years. A plaque gives the following statistics:
Dead: 73,884
Injured: 74,909
Sufferers: 120,820
Houses burned down:11,574
Houses half-ruined, 5,509
Houses partly damaged 50,000

At the south end of the park is a giant flowing water fountain. This Fountain of Peace was created in 1969 giving prayer to all of the people who perished in the bombing while vainly searching for water.

At the base of the fountain is a black stone plaque with Lines from a poem carved into it. They were written by a girl named Sachiko Yamaguchi, who was nine at the time of the bombing,

It reads:
"I was thirsty beyond endurance. There was something oily on the surface of the water, but I wanted water so badly that I drank it just as it was."

Lugnuts

Yeah, I know it’s the wrong type of racing… (Racin’ is Rubbin’) Perhaps it’s the after effects of a Full Moon? But for some unknown reason I felt compelled to watch my very first Craftsman Truck race Friday night… Uhm? What’s that Warren Zevon song called? Oh Yeah, Werewolves in London!

It just feels like Teen Spirit, nope that’s not it! But where else can you hear the high pitched squeakiness of ‘ol “Moonshine Mikey!” Yet SPEED has done a particularly good job of hyping this championship as the points lead has flip-flopped five times now…

And how ‘bout dat JV, eh? I mean if you don’t succeed at first; Try-Try-Try again! As Jack Vanilla musta been hearin’ Number 9? Number 9? Number 9? In his head, as he hit the #09 truck NOT once, but twice… The second time causing a Red Flag to be thrown to perform makeshift repairs to the HOLE punched into the retaining wall by a hapless competitor.

And wonder why they call Phoenix a one-mile “Bull Ring?” Because the Trucks managed to set a record for cautions, with a total of 11 yellow flags & 2 red flags thrown.

And taking a page out of Formula 1 there was explicit, unhidden displays of Team Orders being used to try helping the two championship protagonists gain valuable points as their teammates drove as dutiful blocking backs, although “Juan ‘O” Mike skinner’s wingmen didn’t cooperate at the finish… And I’m pulling for Skinner to win the title since he’s driving a “Toy-yoter.”

Meanwhile Sam Hornish Jr., who’s on the cusp of becoming a full time RASSCAR Sprint Cup driver next season, must have been buoyed by the pending announcement. Having finally broken his qualifying jinx and making the cut for Sunday’s big hoedown. (Attempt #7)

Five out of six ex-Open Wheel warriors made the cut for this weekend’s shootout in the Desert. (SHUSHHH!!! Don’t let Sherriff Joe hear dem words shoot out! (With top Rookie of the Year candidate MAC Montoya leading the way in 14th. Monty was followed by:”Pat Carpenter” (Patrick Carpentier) and Jackie V (Jacques Villeneuve) in 24th and 27th place respectively. Sam “I AM” Hornish Jr. split the Canadian duo and will make his “Big Top” Roundy-round debut, rolling off in the 26th position.

Interestingly all three Open Wheelers made their way into the race with qualifying times, while once again AJ Almendinger DNQ’ed. But, Hey! Don’t worry; I’ll be watchin’ the Mexico City Champ Car race this Sunday instead!

Go Justin!

Champ Car Season Finale

Although it seems more of a formality with “The Hamburgular” having already wrapped up the Championship at Surfers Paradise. Nevertheless it will be Sebastian Bourdais very final race in Champ Car before he departs to Formula 1 in 2008.

And for the Mexico City elevation Champ Car will add an extra 50bhp to its vaunted “P2P” feature, better known as Power to Pass. This is when any of the competitor’s can push a button on their steering wheel for a specific amount of time to induce extra horsepower or “Turbo Boost!”

And instead of the normal 60 second time allotment, the P2P will be increased to 75 seconds. Thus the Champ Car circus will have a maximum of 850bhp on tap for 75 seconds in Mexico.

Does this mean that perhaps somebody will be able to pass Sea Bass for the win? As I’m still mad over his pin ball bounce off of Justin Wilson on the very final lap to steal the victory last year…

And supposedly Pacific Coast Motorsports will be making a “Big” announcement in Mexico. Hmm, let’s see. Mario Dominguez plus Tecate beer. Wonder what it could be? Now all we need is those long departed Tecate “Girls.”

You can catch the Champ Car season finale this Sunday on ESPN2 @ 11AM. (Pacific)

Free Champ Car stuff?

I just noticed the following comment from Richard left on the Champ Car Calendar link and was totally unaware of this.

The Champ Car sponsors are offering Free Tickets and Access Passes to the Long Beach Grand Prix 2008. I just had to answer a small survey to take part. A lot of other Champ Car stuff like apparel, autographs, etc. is also being given away here - http://www.champcarfanzone.com/
Almost daily! Looks good, has anyone you know tried it?

Since I just found out about this, I don’t know if anybody else has tried it or not. Hmm, Free Tickets to Long Beach… Can you say Sun Burn?

Thanks Richard

Champ Car announces 2008 Schedule

Champ Car has FINALLY announced their 2008 schedule, which will feature the same amount of races run this season. The 14 race venues will feature a few revisions, with another temporary street circuit being excluded from the mix. Champ Car will now consist of eight road courses and six street circuits, while four races dropped from this year’s calendar will not return. Also Laguna Seca will replace San Jose in 2008.

While much banter is being made about the addition of the newest European race to be contested at Jerez, little is being said about the demise of Las Vegas after a single event, which was also promoted by the same organizers of the stillborn Phoenix Champ Car race. Thus the 2008 schedule will revert to its tradition of opening in Long Beach (April 20) and conclude in Mexico City. (Nov 9)

Jerez previously was a Formula 1 circuit until 1997, which has now apparently given up hopes of landing a future Grand Prix after the introduction of Spain’s newest venue on the streets of Valencia.

Currently Jerez is used as a Formula 1 winter testing haven and will now host its inaugural Champ Car race on June 8th in conjunction with the Zolder event which has been moved to June 1st.

Although thought to be on shaky ground, the Portland Champ Car race will once again return in 2008 for its 25th anniversary, albeit on a new date, now being moved to the hottest part of the summer in Oregon. (July 27) Hopefully the weather will not repeat the last American Le Mans event held during the same weekend, when the temperature hit 100 degrees…

Mika retires (Again)

Mercedes Benz held their yearly “Stars ‘N Cars” season ending event this past weekend. With the 13th annual extravaganza being held at the factory museum in Stugart,

With both road and racing cars on hand, the show included a temporary circuit being set up for demonstration laps, along with pit stop competitions.

While both current McLaren drivers were scheduled to attend along with various DTM drivers, Mika Hakkinen tooled around the course in his McLaren MP4/13 in which he won his first World Championship in 1998, before taking part in the autograph session

The event served as the perfect backdrop for the former double World Champion to make his announcement of his plans to retire from motor racing.

After three seasons in the DTM (2005-07) which saw him net three victories for Mercedes Benz, Hakkinen has decided to hang up his helmet permanently at the age of 39. Yet the Finn plans to continue his long-time association with Mercedes and said an announcement of his plans would follow shortly…

Schuey’s excellent adventure

Ever wonder what a retired Formula 1 star does for fun? If you’re none other than seven times World Champion Michael Schumacher, you’re probably busy “Jet Setting” around the globe.

Thus Herr Schumacher has just “wowed” the crowds; including reigning Moto GP champion Casey Stoner with his ride aboard the Australian’s Ducati at Valencia.

After handing over his “Scooter” to Schuey, the 38 year old German went out and set a time that was only 5 seconds off of the overall lap record and just 1 second behind ex-Moto GP multiple champion Kevin Schwantz.
Meanwhile Ferrari has confirmed that Schumacher will test its double World Champion F2007 chassis next week at Fiorono, Ferrari’s home test track in Maranello.

The test is claimed to be for technical evaluations of the upcoming season’s rules changes, when traction control and “Driver aids” will be banned. But Schumacher has divulged his desire to drive the car is also for fun. While Team Principal Jean Todt said he’d be happy to indulge Michael whenever he wishes to drive one of their chassis.

And all of this comes amidst speculation fueled by Williams co-owner Patrick Head’s recent statements alluding to the possibility of Ron Dennis hiring Schuey as Alonso’s replacement for 2008?

Yet Michael must still have sponsorship endorsements as Forbes magazine gave him the top power ranking for racing drivers, number 24. Interestingly the top three weren’t Oval Track phenoms.

Schuey was ranked ahead of 2007 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen and Moto GP superstar Valentino Rossi, while the top Roundy Round boy was Jeff “Pretty Boy” Gordon. And bringing up the rear was none other than the Princess. (Danica)

Motorsports salaries(Forbes; Not overall rankings)

1. Kimi Raikkonen $40 million
2. M. Schumacher $36m
3. Valentino Rossi $30m
4. Jeff Gordon $24.5m
5. Danica Patrick $5m

And with Michael having made his big screen debut in Disney’s blockbuster Cars movie, one must wonder why he’d return to Formula 1 as he really has nothing left to prove…
