Noted Designer Bob Riley take the Chequered Flag

As how many race car Designers also worked on the Apollo Moon project?

Cannot help of thinking about Dario Franchitti’s comments about Halloween’s a Shit time of the year due to His friend Greg Moore dying that day in California. Or how Geo. Phillips of Oilpressure fame noted how October saw Dan Wheldon perish in Las Vegas, Tony Renna at Indianapolis and recently noted designer bob Riley.

Almost decided against scribblin’ anything about this. Since as typical, I’m late to thee party…

Thus I still really don’t know much about the man, other than the late bob Riley was a noted racecar designer. And at the very least, associated with four famous racing cars!

Beginning with working upon the shelby American Ford GT40 Mk IV, which won the 1967 24 Heurs du Mans with Dan Gurney and A.J. foyt.

As

Foyt would go onto hire Riley to design His stable of coyote IndyCar chassis. Most notably the very Coyote that ‘Ol superTex’ drove to his fourth Indianapolis 500 win. But that’s not the Coyote chassis that inspired me to write something upon No Fenders.

Nope, it was the final 1981 coyote, bob Riley’s first ground effects Open wheel Racing chassis. And I simply love the bit about how the racecar created so much downforce, they couldn’t find any springs strong enough for it! And had to cut holes in the chassis to relieve pressure…

Another racecar Riley and son bill designed was the Intrepid RM-1, also known as the Intrepid GTP or Chevrolet GTP of the early 19990’s, which featured rear wheel covers and a shovel nose. Being known for its predigious amounts of downforce and amazing cornering speeds. But my mind immediately goes to the other TK’, aka Tommy Kendall’s massive accident in this carwhich raced between 1991-93.

Another Bob Riley design I wasn’t aware of was the Ford GTP Mustang for IMSA competition, which was a front engine design. And like the Intrepid won just a single race.

I was also not aware that it was another Riley design that Kendall utilized to dominate SCCA Pro Racing’s Trans Am series in the 1990’s. When Kendall and Roush Racing blitzed the field with those dominating Ford Mustang “Body Quencher” TA Steeds!

Yet when I think of Bob Riley, who passed away on October 24th at the age of 93. I immediately think of the domineering Riley & Scott Mk III Prototypes that ruled the roost in the World Sports Car )WSC) category of IMSA GT and the rival USRRC. Also racing at Le Mans and later in the American Le Mans Series.

Riley & Scott was formed in 1990 by Bob Riley and Mark Scott, beginning with Trans Am racecars before focusing upon a World Sports Car design for the upcoming IMSA GT Championship.

Following their stillborn Mk II Sports Car design, they were hired to improve Rob Dyson’s Spice Ferrari chassis. With the lessons learned aiding in the design of the Mk III.

Dyson Racing debuted the Riley & Scott Mk III at the 1995 24 Hours of Daytona, running two cars and winning a total of five races that season.

Part of the Riley & Scott Mk III’s popularity was its accepting multiple normally aspirated engines. Including the likes of ford, Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, BMW and the Judd V-10. As the Prototype won its first Rolex 24 in 1996 with Doyle Racing and Oldsmobile. With Wayne Taylor, Scott Sharp and Jim Pace at its keyboard…

The following year was when Dyson Racing used a village ‘O drivers to score victory with its Mk III Ford chassis. As I can still vaguely recall the No. 20 entry driving into victory lane with its seven drivers piled aboard it!

As Rob Dyson, Elliot forbes-Robinson and John “Not Bo” Schneider were joined by the team’s No. 16 entry of Butch Leitzinger, Andy Wallace, James Weaver and John Paul Jr. after their entry retired on lap 227.

Momo Corse and its Ferrari 333 SP, the Riley & Scott Mk III’s main competizione won the ’98 Rolex 24, before Dyson won in 1999, again with its trusty Mk III Ford entry.

For 1998, the second iteration of the Mk III was built, which followed with the Mk III C variant racing until 2005. Although Riley and co. deferred work on the MK III while contracted to create the Cadillac North Star factory effort. As the Riley & Scott Mk III would amass nearly 50 victories overall in 130-plus starts!

Riley & Scott was acquired by Reynard Cars in 1999. Yet Reynard’s expansion was too quick and they filed for Bankruptcy in 2001. Which not only saw the dissolution of Reynard Cars, but also Riley & Scott.

Undaunted by this turn of events, Bob Riley and son Bill continued their success upon forming Riley Technologies in 2001. With subsequent Riley Prototype chassis now designed for the Daytona Prototype (DPi) era winning a further seven Rolex 24 races.

The company also “dabbled” in Saloons’, having designed the Speedsource Mazda RX8 that won the 2008 GT Class at the Rolex 24. Along with that year’s BMW M6 and ALMS GT2 category Corvette vs. those dominating Prat & Miller Vettes’.

While I last kept track of Riley’s exploits in earnest when running the Werks’ Dodge Viper program between 2012-14. Which culminated with the team winning the Team’s and Drivers championships in the American Le mans Series in 2014. (ALMS) Before Chrysler pulled the plug upon the SRT Viper racing program.

As the list goes on and on. For which you’d have to say that Bob Riley definitely left His mark upon motorsports…

The Business of Motor Racing!

As why did I think of “Riders On the Storm”, Eh?

Sheez, you have company for a scant 72 Hours, tune out of motor racing and News in general and Wallah! A litany ‘O events occur.

First ‘n foremost was the Death of Rufas Parnell Jones, better known simply as Parnelli Jones, the 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner. For whom I far more appreciated for His 1970 Trans Am Championship in those Nasty Bud Moore School Bus yellow BOSS 302’s!

As I’ll let another past legend, the late Robin Miller do the “Heavy” lifting upon what made ‘Ol rufas so great in the video below…

https://racer.com/2024/06/05/from-the-archive-robin-miller-on-parnelli-jones/

Meanwhile, seemingly All Hell broke loose on the MotoGP Silly Season! First learning that Ducati had signed The Pinball Wizard, nee Marc Marquez to a “multi-year” contract as Pecco’ Bagnaia’s teammate for 2025. As Marquez had said He would only ride for a Factory team in 2025, apparently forcing ducati’s Hands…

As Jorge Martin had apparently seen the Handwriting on the proverbial wall, and signed to ride for the Factory Aprilia team beginning next year. Although I don’t know who His teammate will be? Or why Aprilia would drop Maverick Vinales?

While reportedly “the Beast”, nee Enea Bastianini will move to KTM, although I’d expect Him to be riding for the GasGas Tech 3 satellite squad, especially since rumours claim that KTM will provide four latest Werks’ spec scooters for it’s four riders.

Since I’m Arse-suming that Thriller Miller, aka Jack Miller will be replaced by Pedro Acosta, the 2021 Moto3 and 2023 Moto2 champion at the Factory team next year…

Next, I feel sad for Tom blomqvist. Having mused to myself immediately after hearing the news He’d been “Parked” for two races beginning at Detroit; Can Y’all say Hello David Malukas!

But Malukas’s announcement of returning to an IndyCar cockpit was overshadowed by Juncos Hollinger Racing’s driver Augustin Canapino’s Maelstrom!

Naturally the cynic in me said this was a move to keep the Out-of-Touch Canapino from having to face the “Music”, Err media during the Road America IndyCar weekend. Following Canapino’s Abhorrent behaviour regarding the social media Death Threats that Theo Pourchaire received after colliding with the Argetinian during the Detroit Grand Prix. For which the IndyCar rookie Pourchaire was told to drop three places during the race for.

And while I said Good for You Zak Brown and Arrow McLaren for severing your strategic alliance with JHR. Since it seems that the only way that Ricardo Juncos and Company would understand that Canapino and His Fans were wrong was to Hit them financially, since this is the third time this has happened in 14 months!

http://www.nofenders.net/2023/09/stop-hate-argentina.html

Nonetheless, as Marshall Pruett points out, there’s 65-70 employees at JHR who aren’t enjoying the undeserved scrutiny! And obviously have families to provide for…

Having missed the start of Friday’s Road America practice, I was initially Cornfuzed’ over why IndyCar Radio was saying Nolan Siegel’s name? Not knowing that He’d been asked to step into Canapino’s No. 78 entry just an hour before practice began! And only had 15mins to get acclimated to His IndyCar ride following practicing for the week’s Indy NXT race.

Siegel then was “excused” by HMD Motorsports to skip the Indy NXT race and focus solely upon His IndyCar Gig’ instead. With no word on whether or not He’d be back in the JHR cockpit for His second “Home” race at Laguna Seca in a fortnight’s time?

As we now know, Canapino has been announced as the driver of the No. 78 for the remainder of the season, after having had an Attitude “Adjustment” during His time off…

And I know we’re supposed to believe that Augustin’s seen the light and give Him the benefit of the doubt. But what’s going to happen the next time over the remaining ten races when somebody collides with the Argetinian?

Although I did learn during All of this turmoil that Nolan Siegel’s father Mark is a very wealthy Venture Capitalist. Meaning that apparently the lack of IndyCar’s paltry $850,000 Indy NXT Advancement Prize is not a deterrent towards Nolan getting a Fulltime IndyCar ride in 2025. Especially since He’s dropped one place to fourth in the points standings following Road America. Then being 79 points adrift of Jacob Abel, who appears to be locked-in a two way title fight against Louis Foster…

As I was told that Siegel’s No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing entry for His failed Indianapolis 500 attempt ran devoid of any sponsorship! Which totally befuddles me, since it’s Indy Cars biggest race of the year! As the Siegel’s must have paid Dale a lot of money to keep His sonny’s Barbeque off it’s sidepods, Eh?

Whilst I can only speculate that Nolan’s jump to drive for JHR on a moment’s notice was part of their plan to get Him more IndyCar seat time in preparation for next year.

And then there’s IndyCar jumping to FOX for it’s 2025 and beyond Television partner. For which All I can say initially is that IndyCar took the money!

Since it’s even sadder that the IndyCar calendar has been compressed once again, ending on August 31st next year! Especially since FOX could have shifted the final September TV Broadcasts to either FS1 or FS2. Nah, Ain’t gonna Happen! As College Football’s way too lucrative, Oh Never Mind!

Gil de Ferran Dies at Age 56

Uploading: 158794 of 158794 bytes uploaded.

Gil de Ferran and Good Buddy Helio Castroneves at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2023. (The Tomaso Collection)

As De Ferran accomplished so many things inside and out of the cockpit. Including being a team owner in Sports Cars and IndyCar, to BAR Honda F1 Sporting Director and more…

Late Friday evening, I was listening to my NFB Newsline for The Blind telephone news, and was shocked by what I heard upon the Indianapolis Star’s Sport section!

As the news that Gil de Ferran had died from a Heart attack at age 56 sent a chill down my spine! For which naturally the entire motor racing fraternity is shocked over. Not to mention obviously gil’s family!

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, De Ferran who was racing along with His son Luke in Boca-Locka, florida suddenly wasn’t feeling good and pulled over, before eventually dying from Heart attack!

I only met De Ferran once briefly during a long ago Legends Day outing at Mother Speedway. Where Carpets’ was my IMS Sherpa, and I recall several people running past us due to our slow pace. Leading us to a shorter autograph line that included De Ferran.

Gil always seemed to be the consummate Gentleman with a laconic vocal style which led me to believe He was somewhat cerebral. Yet this allowed Him to also play pranks upon unsuspecting friends and fellow racing drivers. As just ask Helio Castroneves about being pulled over on 16th and Georgetown for speeding!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwVT3oM_Fuw

As my favourite racing memory of De Ferran has to be the year He won at Portland International Raceway, for which I initially guessed was 1997. Before quickly remembering that was when Mark Blundell triumphed for Home-team PacWest Racing.

De Ferran held off  hard charging Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Juan Pablo Montoya, who’d started from Pole and led much of the race. With Montoya finishing runner-up and Dario Franchitti for Team Cool Green third

As the win at Portland in 1999 was Gil’s first in three years, before moving to Penske Racing the following season…

As Gil was driving for Walker Racing and running on Goodyear tyres, which at that point were inferior to Firestone rubber. Yet the cagey Derrick Walker called another master-class strategy that enabled De Ferran to win!

Gil is obviously best remembered for winning the 2003 Indianapolis 500 for Penske Racing, after finishing runner-up to Penske teammate Castroneves in ’01.

De Ferran won a total of 12 IndyCar races and 21 Poles. Along with the 2000-01 CART/FedEx IndyCar Championships, also driving for Roger Penske.

Along with setting the All-time closed course fastest lap speed at Fontana Speedway. Where De Ferran went an astounding 241.428mph in a Penske Racing Reynard 2k Honda in 2000!

Australia’s First Female Garage Proprietor

As why does that ‘Ol Alice’s restaurant song come to mind, Eh?

Was doing my daily News trawl via my NFB Newsline for The Blind’s telephone service. Where the New York Times Obituary section had another of it’s Overlooked articles. This time chronicling the rather short life of Alice Anderson.

For which like Mwah, Y’all are probably saying Alice Anderson Who?

Anderson is featured in Loretta Smith’s 2019 book titled A Spanner in the Works: The extraordinary story of Alic Anderson and Australia’s first All-Girl Garage.

And although the NY Times article said Her full name was Alice Elizabeth Foley Anderson, She also seems to have been known as Alecia Elizabeth Foley Anderson. Being born on June 8, 1897 in Melbourne, Australia.

Love the NY Times description of Mechanic Alic scowling at the camera with elbows out, eyebrows arched, Her Bob’ tucked underneath a Chauffeurs cap. Wearing a shirt with a tie and a gloved hand jauntily resting upon the steering wheel in a photograph taken in August, 1918.

As Alice grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne, riding a bicycle, Horses and learning how to Shoot Guns. As Her father who was an Engineer whose company landed the Australian patent for a Concreting technique that revolutionized roads and bridges. Gave Alice a Hubmobile at age 18, while She worked as a Secretary for Her Dad’s Transportation company.

Alice quickly began badgering the mechanics to teach Her how to drive, before beginning to hone Her driving skills over the dangerous Black Spurs route, apparently in the rather large eight passenger Hubmobile!

After completing an Mechanics Apprenticeship, Alice opened the first All Female Garage in Australia, and once of the first in the world, where She only employed women, who She called Her Garage Girls. Eventually training 29 ore more Garage Girls, with Anderson’s Garage also offering Chauffeur services…

As the opening ceremony for the Garage featured several female mechanics in shirts with ties and slacks serving sandwiches. With a famous Opera singer and the future Prime Minister in attendance.

Anderson’s Garage performed all aspects of mechanical repairs including what was called the “Once Over” service. Which included doing the Get down and Get Under service routine on one of Alice’s inventions. What essentially is known today as the mechanic’s Creeper…

Alice, along with co-driver Jessie Webb set out in 1926 to become the first females to drive a vehicle from Melbourne to Alice Springs, a journey of over 1,500 miles upon rugged, torturous, bone jarring, rattling fillings Outback! Where most preferred the customary travel of Camels instead!

As Anderson and Webb drove a Baby Austin, the smallest car available, removing it’s doors in order to strap supplies onto the Austin instead. Which included boiling acrid water and Alice shooting their dinner when needed! With the pair being successful in their adventure…

Alice hadplans tobecome a pilot, but sadly Her life was cut short on September 17, 1926. When She was found dead at Her Garage after having accidently Killed Herself while cleaning two of Her Guns…

F1: Remembering Three presumably Overlooked French Formula 1 Drivers

Since I highly doubt any of today’s The Real Housewives of Formula 1 Fans know their names…

In Honour of today being Bastille Day, which occasionally makes me remember that Rush song of the same Gory name.

Wayback’ when Geddy Lee still had His Crooner “Pipes”, (Singing voice) and Rush was ascending towards Rock ‘N roll Stardom with the impending release of their fourth Studio album 2112. Following the “Darker” and oft, maligned 1975 Caress of Steel album that included the Bastille Day track, and the two singles Return of The Prince and Lakeside Park. Hmm, think I went down another Wabbit’ Hole Thar, eh!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3t6iHhYksc

Hence, I’d like to pay a belated tribute to three presumably, largely forgotten Formula 1 Drivers Since the names of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly and Alpine dominate today’s F1 landscape.

Ironically, and certainly by sheer CoInky-dense’, two of these former French Formula 1 Drivers from the 1980’s took the Chequered flag this past December. With Patrick Tambay Dying on December 4th at Age 73, and Phillipe Streiff on December 23rd at Age 67. Before Jean-Pierre Jabouille joined them on February 2nd at the Age of 80.

Tambay’s name tripped my Number-4 wire since He’s part of another No Fenders story that’s currently sitting on an unlit burner here upon Ye Isle of Nofendersville.

As Tambay raced in both the long forgotten SCCA Formula 5000 and reconstituted Can Am series for the late Carl Haas. Although my research denotes it was actually Haas-Hall Racing. And yes, that’s the same Jim Hall of chapparal fame! When Monsieur Tambay won the first of His eventual two Can Am championships in 1977. Before taking a second title in 1980 for then just Carl Haas Racing. Since Hall was busy obliterating the CART/PPG IndyCar World Series with His revolutionary chapparal 2K Ground effects “Yellow submarine” IndyCar in the hands of Lone Star JR’, aka Johnny Rutherford! But I digress…

Tambay made His formula 1 debut in the 1977 French Grand Prix in a “One Off” for surtees. Moving to Teddy Yip’s theodore Racing before two lean years at McLaren. Leading to His returning to Haas to clich the aforementioned second Can Am title.

Tambay would go onto ultimately record a total of 114 Grands Prix Starts for the likes of zsurtees, Theodore, McLaren, Ligier, Ferrari, Renault and Haas Lola.

With Patrick’s F1 Zenith coming whilst driving for Scuderia Ferrari between 1982-83, winning two Grands Prix. The first being the ’82 German Grand Prix just four races after replacing His stricken friend Gilles Villeneuve. And then taking His second and final victory in the ’83 San Marino Grand Prix. Which surely had to be a delight when celebrating with the Tifosi whilst piloting the famed No. 27 Ferrari synonymous  with the late Gilles!

Yet la Scuderia replaced Tambay with Michele Alboreto the following year, seeing Patrick move to le Reggie’, aka Renault for 1984. Before finishing His F1 career driving for Carl Haas’s Beatrice Force Lola project  in ‘86.

Tambay also contested le 24 Heurs du Mans four times between 1976-1989, with His loan finish being fourth for Tom Walkinshaw Racing’s (TWR) Silk cut Jaguar’s in ’89. Along with finishing third Overall twice in the grueling Dakar Rally!

Tambay later had a long career as a TV Sports Commentator, and served as Deputy Mayor for Le Cannet. Before struggling with having Parkinson’s Disease for years prior to His Death.

Of these three ex-Formula 1 Pilotes’, the one I most admire due to His perseverance of dealing with a life altering Disability is Monsieur Strieff!

Philippe Streiff began His Motor Racing career relatively late at the Age of 22, when He won the 1977 Volant Motul competition. Before winning the Formula Renault race at Circuit Paul ricardthe the following year. Then rapidly advancing, Streiff went onto win the 1981 French formula 3 title before graduating to Formula 2.

Strieff then made His Formula 1 Debut in a third Renault chassis at Estoril in 1984. And if memory serves me correctly? This was an entry to test an In-car Camera?

Streiff then raced part season for Ligier in ’85, replacing the Crash prone Andrea “De Crasheris.” (De Cesaris) Along with a “One Off” appearance for Tyrrell, where the Frenchman raced for the following two years.

While Philippe scored His one and only F1 podium Down Under in Adelaide in 1985, finishing third. Crossing the “stripe” on three wheels after colliding with teammate Jacques Laffite!

In 1988 Philippe returned to AGS, having previously won the European Formula 3 Championship with. Now being an F1 Constructor, unfortunately was involved in a Horrible Pre-season Testing Accident at Rio de Janeiro in early 1989. Being paralyzed from the Neck Down and confined to a Wheelchair for the remainder of His life.

Yet Streiff continued His involvement in Motorsports, including forming the ELF Kart Masters programme, (Karting Masters Paris Vercy) held between 1993-2001. for which such F1 luminaries as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have participated. Along with others like Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter, Sebastien Bourdais, Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti. Plus several Formula 1 drivers over the years…

Philippe also tirelessly advocated for Disability rights along with being the Importer of Adaptive Automobiles. Whilst then Blind Speed record setter Luc Costermans dedicated His accomplishment of capturing the World Blind Road Speed record in 2008 to Streiff.

With Blind Machinist Dan Parker setting the Guinness speed record for a Blind person in 2022…

A Sad Day at Indianapolis 50 years Ago

As Father Time continuously Marches On…

Today used to be known on No Fenders as Art Pollard Day, in Honour of that transplanted Oregonian’s contributions to Life! Along with being a pretty G-Damn Good racecar driver!

Sadly, today marks the 50th Anniversary of Art Pollard’s Death when practicing for the 1973 Indianapolis 500.

As I’ll simply point Y’all towards my original No Fenders tome upon being introduce to Art Pollard some eleven years ago…

http://www.nofenders.net/2012/05/art-pollared-forgotten-driver.html

Salute Art!

Noted Land Speed Record Holder Craig Breedlove Flames Out!

Who as a 13yr Old boy felt “the Need for Speed!” When making His very first pass in a Dragster…

I initially “Heard” the News via the Car and Driver Magazine section upon my Newsline for The Blind telephone service on Wednesday, April 5th. Stating that multiple sources were reporting that Craig Breedlove had Died at the Age of 86 on April 4th.

Breedlove as many may know, was synonymous wit His Spirit of America Jet engine “Rocket” Cars. For which Breedlove became the first to officially break the 400, 500 and lastly 600mph speed barrier. With Breedlove being locked in a Mano e Mano duel with the Arfon Brothers, i.e.; Walt and Art, of Akron, Ohio in their quest to be the Fastest Man on Earth!

Initially Breedlove’s record of 407.447mph over One Flying Mile was Not recognized by the FIA as an official Land Speed Record (LSR) since it failed to meet their guidelines of having four wheels and two driven wheels.

As Breedlove had set that speed in His original Spirit of America, a three wheeled vehicle propelled by a surplus -F-86 Sabre Jet Fighter J-47 Turbojet engine in the Fall of 1963. For which His accomplishment was immortalized by the Beach boys Spirit of America song that same year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKJcA2foaH4

Then between October 2, 1964 to November 15, 1965, Walt, His younger Half Brother Art and Breedlove traded the land speed record a further eight times! Although Walt hired Tom Green to drive His Wingfoot Express in 1964 after suffering a serious Hand injury when unloading the vehicle at Bonneville. With Art claiming three land speed records vs. Breedlove five.

As Breedlove’s Two way average Flying Mile speed of 600.601mph mark stood for five years until Gary Gabelich aboard His Blue Flame Natural Gas powered Rocket Car broke the record at 622.407mph over One mile, which I’ve previously scribbled’ about here upon No Fenders ong ago in my two part The 700 Club tome.

http://www.nofenders.net/2010/06/700-club.html

Craig recorded a speed of 526.277mph in His Sonic I in 1964. Yet His parachutes failed to operate and Breedlove went onto claim another record, albeit surely unwanted. With the Guinness Book of World Records denoting His five mile Skid as the World’s longest!

Before the out of control Sonic I Hit a telegraph Pole with legend claiming Breedlove had the presence of mind to unlock the Sonic I’s canopy before submerging itself in a Brine water lake! And when rescuers finally arrived. Breedlove calmly pronounced for my next trick I’ll set Myself on fire!

As I was fortunate enough to see Breedlove’s record setting Spirit of America Sonic I, a General electric J-79 Phantom Jet Fighter engine’s four wheel Jet Car on display at then the IMS Hall of Fame Museum Wayback’ in May, 2012. For which I’d have to say it seemed totally out of place amongst the various classic Indianapolis 500 racing cars…

Yet when I think of Messer Breedlove, my mind invariably wonders back to the years 1996-97. When over the course of approximately one year, Breedlove saw the Highs ‘N Lows for the pursuit of becoming the first person to break the Speed of Sound on land, then the ultimate Land Speed record!

As I cannot say that I really remember Craig’s incident in October, 1996, when a garbled radio message left Him misunderstanding the winds velocity of 15mph Crosswinds, which He heard as 1.5mph! Therefore, during a High Speed run of some 675mph, Craig Heavily crashed His latest land speed record Challenger, the Spirit of America Formula Shell LSRV!

As this latest Spirit of America LSR vehicle also utilized an ubiquitous GE J-79 Turbojet engine for it’s motivating power, albeit being converted to produce it’s maximum 22,650lbs thrust running on unleaded Gasoline.

Yet what I still remember most, was working in what was affectionately Not! Known as the “Plywood Palace,” with a Blimey’ British Engineer John Somebody’ politely throwing Barbs back “n forth with me daily over Breedlove’s race against Richard Noble’s ThrustSSC at Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, for ultimate Bragging rights over being the first to break the Sound barrier on land. For which we All know ThrustSSC did so in October, 1997.

http://www.nofenders.net/2017/10/when-thrustssc-went-supersonic-on-land.html

As I do recall how a loose bolt completely destroyed Breedlove’s primary J-79 engine during a speed attempt run. And His underfinance, tiny volunteer crew never recovered from that incident! Even after installing a backup jet engine, Craig just couldn’t compete against ThrustSSC and Andy green.

Being a Shelby American and All things Blue Oval Devotee. I’m aware of the Arse-sumedly obscure fact that Craig would set some 23 Speed records aboard one of ‘Ol Shel’s Cobra Daytona Coupes Wayback in November, 1965 at a Goodyear tyre test. And then later again at Bonneville, along with His wife Lee, would set multiple records for AMC in both it’s radical AMX and Javelin “Pony Car” automobiles.

Since I’m guessing most, like myself originally, aren’t aware that Craig’s wife Lee was also a Speed Junky. Having become the world’s Fastest Couple in 1965!

Although Breedlove was married a total of six times, and He and Lee Divorced in 1968…

Having only discovered that Lee had held the Women’s land Speed record at 308.5mph, also set aboard the Spirit of America’s Sonic I in 1965. When learning of Jessie Combs Death in 2019.

As Combs had broken Lee Breedlove’s record in 2013 and was then chasing Kitty O’Neil’s record before perishing in the Alvord Desert in Oregon, before being awarded the current Women’s land speed record posthumously…

F1: Mauro Forghieri, Distinguished Ferrari Designer Dies at 87

As this tall, lanky Bespectacled Engineer was responsible for much of Ferrari’s Glory…

What more can I say to sum up the remarkable career of the late Mauro forghieri, who took the Chequered Flag on November 2nd. Besides The Guardian’s Obituary noting His being the last Man to be capable of designing World Championship winning racecars from Chassis and Suspension, to Engine and Gearbox.

Most notably, Mauro’s known for leading John surtees, (1964) Niki Lauda (1975, 1977) and Jody Scheckter (1979) to their Formula 1 World Championships for Scuderia Ferrari.

Along with Jacky Ickx, Clay Regazzoni, Carlos Reutemann and Gilles Villeneuve winning Grands Prix behind the wheels of His Ferrari F1 Chassis. In total winning 54 Grands Prix, four Drivers and seven Constructors F1 Championships.

Forghieri was also responsible for two of my All-time favourite Ferrari racecars, the Ferrari 312T2 and 512M. As reportedly, the Scuderia’s 312T for it’s Transverses Gearbox was the most successful F1 chassis, garnering an impressive 27 wins! And I was fortunate enough to see the 1975 312T’s of both Lauda and Regazzoni in action during the 1994 Monterey Historics.

And while I should be impressed over Mauro’s Monoposto F1 Designs beginning with the 158, to being the first to introduce a rear wing onto a Formula 1 chassis in 1968. Along with creating the stellar 312T series to His final creation, la Scuderia’s first turbocharged 126C chassis. I’m also suitably impressed with His Sports Car CV.

Reportedly Mauro began by redesigning the suspension on the most evocative 250 GTO, before being responsible for the 250P, Ferrari’s first rear engine Sports Car Prototype that won the 1963 24 Heurs du Mans. Followed by the 275P taking a 1-2-3 Sweep the following year. Along with ultimately la Scuderia’s final Le Mans triumph to date, the 1965 race with the controversial 250LM, albeit in the hands of Ferrari’s North American “Customer” team…

As forghieri was responsible for All of la Scuderia’s Sports Cars from 1963 to 1973, i.e.; 250P, 275P, 330P, 512M and 312P and other variants.

As Mauro’s Sports Cars won Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring and the famous Targa florio to begin with, along with countless other Sports Car races. As reportedly His favourite Sports Car was the 330P3/4 which fought a losing battle vs. Ford’s All Conquering Ford GT40’s!

Mauro was born on January 13, 1935 in Modena, Emilia-Romagna Italy and went onto earn a Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Bologna. Although interestingly, Airplanes were His first passion and He’d originally planned to take up a career working for the U.S. Northrup Aircraft company instead.

Yet Enzo Ferrari who’d kept track of Him, with Mauro’s father being a Ferrari employee, Hired the young Forghieri in 1960 as an Apprentice working in the Engine Shop. And the rest as they say was History.

At Age 26, Mauro was unexpectedly promoted to Chief Designer and Technical Director of Scuderia Ferrari following the Great Walkout of 1961. When Ferrari’s top eight Engineers were summarily fired by Il Commendatore, nee Enzo Ferrari following a Heated dispute over the previous firing of la Scuderia’s Production Manager.

Thus led by previous Technical Director Carlo Chiti, these men along with Ferrari F1 World Champion Phil Hill created the rival ATS Formula 1 team which failed due to miserable results in 1963…

Yet Ferrari weathered the storm, along with Forghieri leading la Scuderia to it’s 1964 F1 World championship.

Following the arrival of Dr. Harvey Postlethwaite at Ferrari in 1981, Forghieri was essentially pushed out of His leadership role at la Scuderia, albeit spending the next few years designing the Ferrari 408 Prototype Road Car, before leaving Ferrari entirely.

As I tend to recall from a long ago Sports Car Illustrated magazine, the 408 was a study by Ferrari upon how to bond Carbon Fibre to an Aluminum/Steel car’s chassis…

Mauro’s services were then snapped up by rival Italian Automobile Manufacturer Lamborghini, now owned by Crysler in 1987. Being commissioned to build a 3.5-litre normally aspirated V-12 Formula 1 engine, which was raced by Larrousse, Ligier, Lotus, Minardi and the Stillborn Modena F1 Team with fairly unimpressive results. As I believe the Lambo’s weakness was it’s thirstiness for petrol.

Although Aguri-san’, aka Aguri Suzuki scored Lamborghini’s lone F1 Podium when becoming the first Japanese Driver to stand atop the podium. Appropriately finishing third at the controversial 1990 Japanese Grand Prix.

Yet upon revisiting the Chrysler-Lamborghini connection, it triggered my memory into recalling that McLaren had tested a “Mule” version of it’s 1993 chassis, known as the MP4/8B, which Ayrton Senna was said to be most impressed with! Especially the Lambo’s superior Horsepower over the customer Ford HB V-8 the team was utilizing that  season.

Unfortunately thee Ronster’, aka Ron Dennis opted for the vastly inferior Peugeot V-10 lump’ for ’94 instead, and Crysler then killed it’s F1 involvment.

Next Mauro who would only work in His Hometown of Modena, went to work for the revitalized Bugatti concern, where He worked upon the EB110 Supercar, before creating His own Design company, along with remodeling His 18th century villa.

As ironically, Mauro Forghieri passed away following the public unveiling of la Scuderia’s first factory Prototype, the 499P, which will make it’s Competizione debut 50 years after Forghieri’s 312P was raced by Jacky Ickx and Mario Andretti…

Alain De Cadenet: 1945-2022

As this Swashbuckler was an expert on Stamps, vintage Aircraft and Racing Cars…

Was listening to The Guardian via my NFB Newsline for The Blind’s telephone service last Tuesday evening and was surprised to Hear the Sports section say that former racer Alain De cadenet had died at Age 76. For which I was able to listen to the Whole story vs. the You Must Register Now to Keep Reading “firewall” version below…

As I only know Messer De Cadenet’s work as a Talking Head, er Presenter from the long ago Great Speed Channel Show Victory By Design, which De Cadenet Hosted, which I always thought was a Brilliant Show! Even if I found Alain to be somewhat Bombastic and slightly full of Himself. As I know I tired of His immense Self Inflating attitude later on other various Motor Racing Broadcasts. Most notably Me Thinks Speed’s coverage of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and 24 Heurs du Mans TV Broadcasts.

And whilst I was totally aware that De Cadenet had raced multiple times at Circuit de la Sarthe. As I believe the Obituary says He contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans 14 times. And also knew He’d raced aboard His own De CadenetSports Cars.

I didn’t know that He’d had famed Formula 1 Designer Gordon Murray “Pen” Him a racecar! Which apparently came about after Il Commendatore, nee Enzo Ferrari refused to sell Him one of His top flight racing Sports Cars!

As De Cadenet made His Le Mans Debut in 1971 behind the wheel of a Belgian entered Ferrari 512M, driving with just one good working Eye! His other having been injured in a motor race previously.

Then when Enzo wouldn’t sell Him a Ferrari for the ’72 event, He commissioned Murray with the backing of Duckham’s Motor Oil to turn a Brabham Formula 1 car into a two seater Le Mans Sports Prototype, which He ultimately finished 12th Overall with longtime co-Driver Chris Craft behind the Keyboard of their Duckham’s LM72 3.0 liter Cosworth DFV V-8 entry.

For 1975,De Cadenet acquired a Lola T380 Sports Car also powered by Ford’s ubiquitous cossie’ (Cosworth) DFV V-8(“Double four valves”) variant, which gave Alain His Best finish at Le Mans. When De Cadenet and Craft finished third Overall at the 1976 24 Heurs du Mans…

While I have to give De Cadenet His Due, since He raced in earnest, and enjoyed racing at such classic, challenging venues as the Mighty Spa, aka Spa Francorchamps and the Green Hella’, nee Nurburgring’s famed Nordschleif! Not to mention shocking the Sports Car fraternity by winning both  the 1980 1000km of Monza and Six Hours of Silverstone with Desire Wilson!

How Many Know about the late Roberta Cowell?

As She led a most Fascinating life…

Author’s Note

Once again, your Humble No Fenders Scribe is running extremely way behind the Pack, Uhm Race! Since this story’s been gaterin’ Moss Here upon thou Oregon Coast the past two years now. But like the late Kurt Vonnegut famously said: “so it goes…”

Tomaso

Pride Month

I first listened to The New York Times Obituary article about Roberta Cowell Wayback’ in June, 2020, when All sorts of Mayhem was occurring! Not to mention my own struggles to migrate successfully to my new, cough Cough, Ahem! Improved, Yeah that’s supposedly the ticket! Windows 10 Operating system, which simply was a Nightmare!

As I’d hoped to tie this No Fenders story into that year’s Annual Pride Month, But Y’all Know thee Drill here in Nofendersville. Now aiming to post it on the Anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots instead, which Y’all can learn more about in the following link.

https://www.history.com/topics/gay-rights/the-stonewall-riots

Whilst Ye Waves ‘O Synchronicity splashed upon thoust once again, when “Reading,” Err listening to The New York times Obituary section earlier this month about the totally unknown to Mwah Clela Rorex,

Who became the first U.S. County clerk to issue a Marriage licence to a Gay Couple in Colorado in 1975.

https://www.losangelesblade.com/2022/06/19/clela-rorex-first-u-s-county-clerk-to-issue-gay-marriage-licenses-has-died/

Another Pioneer…

As we All know now, the typical, yearly Pride Month Festivities were completely wiped out two years ago due to the Deadly COVID 19 Pandemic, with just over 133,000 Americans succumbing to the Corona Virus when I initially began typing this…

Whilst as a Nation, we’ve “Moved On” from Covid, albeit I know we’ve long surpassed the One Million Death mark from this Deadly virus! With No idea how soon, or if we’ve already eclipsed 1.2 Million American Deaths from COVID-19? Which by my very rudimentary Math would equate to More than 20 times the U.S. Military’s total Vietnam Casualties of 58,000!

And couple this with the Gruesomely Heinous Death of George Floyd on Memorial Day (2020) no less! And it's easy to see why that year's June's Annual Pride Month went virtually unnoticed.

Yet obviously this is why Roberta Cowell's long forgotten Death was finally published that June in the New York Times obituary section in it's series of Overlooked persons Deaths nearly a Decade after her passing, Say What?

As Y'all may be Sayin' what's All ye Gory Fuss over Roberta Elizabeth Marshall Cowell? Well she was actually born Robert Marshall Cowell on April 8th, 1918 before becoming Roberta in the early 1950's, which at that time was extremely Taboo in Bloody great Britain! And was the first known Trans Woman to have Sex Reassignment Surgery in 1951.

Yet I suppose I wouldn't have become so infatuated by Roberta's exploits if not for learning that she was a British Racing Driver, along with serving as a Pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

Roberta's interest in Fast Cars reportedly dates back to her early School years at the Whitgift Boys School, where She was a member of the School’s Motor club before leaving School at Age 16. Roberta then briefly served as an Apprentice Aircraft Engineer before leaving to join the Royal Air Force in 1936 as a Pilot Officer on probation before being discharged due to Air sickness.

Yet I suppose Military service was in Her DNA, since Her Father Major-General Sir Ernest Marshall Cowell was a prominent Surgeon who served in both of the “Great Wars,” i.e.; World War I and World War II. And during 1944 was made Honourary Surgeon to King George VI.

Also during 1936 while studying Engineering at University College London, Powell began motor racing in earnest. Winning Her Class at the Lands End Speed Trial that year, whilst Cutting Her Teeth as a volunteer Mechanic at Brooklands.

As Powell’s Highwater mark in motor racing came when participating in the 1939 Antwerp Grand Prix, a Sports Car race, before WWII consumed All of Europe.

Having obtained Her Private Pilot’s license prior to the outbreak of War, Powell first was commissioned as a pilot in the Royal Army Service Corps in 1940. Then transferred to the RAF in 1942, and eventually was flying reconnaissance missions in a Spitfire PR.XI variant.

Roberta made a lucky escape on June 4, 1944 when suffering an Oxygen system failure at an Altitude of 31,000 feet! As Her Spitfire continued flying for an Hour’s time with the pilot now Comatose! Before regaining semi Consciousness at low Altitude and safely returning  to Base.

Later flying an Hawker Typhoon RF IB on November 18, 1944, Powell wasn’t as lucky. As Her Typhoon reconnaissance Airplane had it’s engine knocked out by German Anti Aircraft fire. And upon making a Dead Stick landing, Powell was captured by German troops.

Failing to escape twice, Powell was sent to Stalag Luft I, where She lost 50lbs during Her five months internment before Stalin’s Red Army liberated the Camp on April 30, 1945.

Roberta Cowell: A Life in Transition

As it’s really Hard to believe it took Almost a Decade for this News to reach U.S. shores…

Author’s Note

Per Tipicali Here upon thoust Isle ‘O Nofendersville, your Humble Scribe cannot manage to scribble a Short Story. Hence I’m decided to break this No Fenders tome into two part Harmony…

Tomaso

As noted in Part One, Roberta Elizabeth Marshall Cowell was Born Robert Marshall Cowell, one of three Children of parents Sir Major-General Ernest Cowell and Dorthy Elizabeth Miller in 1918.

During Her Engineering Studies at University College London , Robert met fellow Engineering Student Diana Margaret Zelma Carpenter, who became the University’s (UCL) first Female to Graduate in Mechanical Engineering, with the couple Marrying in the Summer of 1941. They would have two Daughters, Ann and diana before the couple first separated in 1948, and ultimately Divorced in 1952.

Post World War II Transition

Following the War, Cowell formed a Motor Racing Team that contested events all across Europe, including taking part in the Brighton Beach Trials and the Grand Prix at Roeun-less-Essarts.

Suffering from Depression and having separated from His Wife, following sessions with a second Freudian Psychiatrist, He discovered that His inner self was more Female and that He’d been suppressing these feelings for most of His life.

Which makes me believe Roberta must have already subconsciously known this. Since in Her Autobiography, She mentions how She felt uneasy during Her captivity as a Prisoner of War and how come of the Allied Airmen seemed to be propositioning Her. Not to mention immediately refusing to play the part of a Female in one of the Camp’s Plays, for Fear it would signal Her potential Homosexuality!

Thus by 1950, although still living as Robert, She was taking large doses of Estrogen and became a close friend of Physician Michael Dillon, the first Trans Man.

Wit the Help of Dillon, sir Harold Gillies, renown as the Father of Plastic Surgery in the UK, plus American Surgeon Ralph Miller. Robert had successful Sex Reassignment Surgery and became the first Trans Female in Britain in 1951. Even legally having Her Gender reassigned on Her Birth Certificate in May of the same year.

By 1954, Roberta’s Business ventures, a Racecar Engineering firm and Clothing concern have ceased trading, along with  Roberta’s identity made it impossible to continue in Grand Prix racing!

News of Her Transgender Surgery garnered Worldwide attention after the Magazine Picture Post published Her story that March. Paying Roberta a sum of $8,000 Pounds. Equivalent to $230,000 British Pounds in 2021. And Roberta also shortly after published Her Autobiography, earning another $1,5000 Pounds. (Approx. $43,000 British Pounds in 2021)

With this new found Stardom, Cowell received some publicity in Motor Racing circles, specifically making Headlines upon winning the 1957 Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill climb. And remained involved in Motorsports thru the early 1970’s.

In 1958, Cowell obtained an surplus World War II De Haviland Mosquito sands engines, that She planned to use in attempting a Speed record across the South Atlantic.

Yet due to lack of funding, and being unable to find sufficient engines, the Mosquito sat Derelict and eventually was scrapped in 1960 after Cowell had gone Bankrupt in 1958 with Debts of some $12,500+ Pounds.

As Roberta basically faded from the limelight thereafter, albeit appearing in a  1972 interview when claiming to be working upon Her second Autobiography that was never published. As Cowell Died in October, 2011, with only six people attending Her Funeral, with instructions requesting No Public Notice be given of Her Death. As Her Death wasn’t be reported until some two years later when a story about Her was published in the Independent Newspaper.

Modern Day Pride Month

Have to say I was really impressed by ‘lil Syd viddle’, aka Sebastian Vettel’s Activism and Outspokenness Pro LGBTQ’ stance at last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix, for which I wholeheartedly Hope that Vettel wears His Pride colours Just Say Love T-Shirt,Rainbow Sneakers,  etc. Again at this year’s event, even if it’s in July. While Vettel has also said publicly He thinks that Formula 1 would Openly welcome a Gay Driver now, which you’d Hope so since it’s Gory 2022!

While I know that the W Series has already Had it’s first Gay Female Driver stand Atop the Podium, not to mention another “Out” Transgender racer named Charlie Martin was competing in Sports Cars and aiming for Glory at Le Mans in 2019.

As C’mon F1’s Brat Pack, i.e.; Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Lando Norris, Y’all too should be supporting Sebastian in this endeavour…

While Kudos to Michael Andretti and DHL for running their Pride theme livery upon Romain Grosjean’s No. 28 Andretti Autosport entry at IndyCar’s biggest race of the year.

https://www.andrettiautosport.com/news/dhl-delivered-with-pride-returns-for-greatest-spectacle-in-racing

As my only Disappointment with this Sponsorship is the fact that DHL and Mikey A’ weren’t willing to run it thru the month of June! Which after all, is National Pride Month.

And Y’all know it’s Ah-Comin’, as was it just sheer coInky-Dense? That our wonderfully Liberal U.S. Supreme Court Overturned Roe v Wade in the month of June? Or that they did it the Cowardly way by trying to Bury it in a Friday News Dump. Since How can we progress as a Nation with such Backwards thinking?

Meanwhile, as I was heading towards the Chequered Flag upon this story, shuzamm! The New York times ran an Obituary article about Chicago Transgender Icon Gloria Allen, albeit some two weeks late! As the 76yr Old Black Chicagoan was known as Momma Gloria and spent Her life trying to instill Hope, Pride and Personal Satisfaction in other younger LGBTQ+ members by setting an unwavering example of Beauty, Grace and Dignity as a modern Role Model, including running a Charm School…
